What lies beneath - Undies and sleepwear contest

Hello everyone, yes its nearly time for our fourth contest of 2022, this one is for the garment sewists amongst us.

What lies beneath!

Rules:
1. Sew a garment (or garments) which is either underwear or sleepwear. This includes pants/briefs, bras, slips, corsets, PJs, night gowns, robes / dressing gowns etc

2. A set can be included as a single entry, so if you make several pairs of briefs, or a PJ top and PJ bottom you can show them together as a single entry.

3. The items can be sewn for an adult, child or doll. For underwear there is no need to model for photos - flat lay is fine!

Timeframe: Construction starts on 1st April and the item(s) must be completed by 30th April.
All entries need to be uploaded with the template and at least one photo by 4th May.

Template: Please submit your entries in this thread using this template

Details to include:
Your User Name and Entry Number (if entering more than once)
What it is with a short description on how you made it, any problems overcome etc.
Up to 4 photos
PLEASE INSERT PICTURES WITHIN YOUR TEXT!

There will be a poll for Forum members to vote for their favourite(s).
(Number of votes will be proportional to the number of entries. If there are only 1 or 2 entries I won't run the poll.)

The winner can choose from The Sewing Places's
Prize Winners Enamel badge or Sew on Embroidered Patch!!!

I'm going to be away (within the UK) for the next couple of weeks and no idea how much internet connectivity there will be.
So I have posted the April contest a few days early.

When I get back I will sew along with you, bralette or PJs I expect!

Thirded sigh!
I may have a go, I bought a pattern for a bralette. I don't like underwires now, and also wear bratops all through the winter. I want some bralettes for summer, I like ones with the slightly padded cups for a better shape.

I don't have a lot of sewing time next month due to the Easter holidays but I have everything I need for some big knickers and this will be a good time to have a go (and get to grips with fold over elastic!)

What's a bralette??

It offers very light support and is more for coverage and comfort than gravity defiance.

The barbary bralette

https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/788419962/printed-sewing-pattern-barbary-crop

It has a lot of variations, I am looking forward to trying it out. I have one from John Lewis that they no longer stock and I would like to imitate. I no longer find ones that fasten at the back comfortable, much prefer pulling them over my head.

I read that as 'Barbie' bralette and was so impressed!

I am thinking about this one, I have some woven cotton fabric that would suit undies/sleepwear. Would a dressing gown count?
Title: Re: What lies beneath - Undies and sleepwear contest
Post by: Kenora on April 01, 2022, 20:53:44 PM
@Lilian - in the opening instructions it states "robes" will be accepted so presumably that means dressing gowns too.  :)
Title: Re: What lies beneath - Undies and sleepwear contest
Post by: Lilian on April 01, 2022, 21:47:41 PM
Thanks @Kenora after I posted I scrolled to the start and read that 'robes' count so I may be joining, I'll see if I can make a start  0_0

A dressing gown is a robe, @Lilian so it would be fine,  I think.

I have some brushed cotton/flannelette fabric, should i wash it beforehand? Is it likely to shrink?
...........................................
I've just popped it in the washing machine as it looked a bit grubby in places.
Title: Re: What lies beneath - Undies and sleepwear contest
Post by: Celia on April 02, 2022, 10:21:06 AM
Yes @Diane i would definitely wash before hand it saves a lot of heartache.

I have a nightdress I want to make and I might do some more leftover knickers made from my scraps.

I would love to make a bra too as the ones I used to buy are no longer made but trying to find something that fits not only me but my requirement of extreme comfort is not easy.

Post by: Bill on April 02, 2022, 10:21:59 AM
Experience has taught me that shrinkage is better happening before the garment is made rather than after.

I'm planning on some boxer shorts for this comp. No I will not be modelling them  :P

If I get the time, I have a dressing gown I want to make for the cabin.  Yes, I overdress.  I also feel if you are taking me on a vacation I get to sleep all day and be up long enough to lounge whilst my husband cooks meat.

Of course...it'll probably be PJ pants.

Well, this is a hard one.  I have far too many pyjamas, nighties, and gowns, so it's thinking cap on...

The one thing I do need, on occasion, is a full underslip...

2 weeks of sewing time left, what are you planning, PJ botts, full slips or culotte slips, bralettes?

I might do a culotte slip to wear under skirts/dresses. I want to do a bralette but don't currently have a pattern which is speaking to me.

I bought some jersey fabric with a bunny design on many months ago. I fished it out the other day with the thought of actually making the intended jim-jams. Whether this will happen in time is anybody's guess  :[

I made a start on my nightdress about 10 days ago but, as you can see, I had a lot of help and supervision!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Despite this I got on very well with it, and don't have very much left to do. However, I took the opportunity to work in the garden for a while on Friday and Saturday. Now, my neck has "gone" again so I have no idea when I'll be able to sew. Patience is definitely required. I hope I'll be able to finish before the end of the month.

I have cut out the trousers for my bunny jim-jams and am waiting for a pattern to arrive for the top.  The overlocker is playing up and I don't have much time to keep messing about so they may not happen. . Still, fingers crossed.

Last time I was sewing I was so enthusiastic to get things done that I sewed up the side seams of my nightdress. So, today, when I was able to sew for a short time, I realised I'd been intending to use the burrito method of sewing and turning the armholes ... but couldn't because I'd already sewn the side seams.  Took me a bit more fiddling to reach up between the lining and the outer fabric and sew them "inside out" IYKWIM. It worked OK but a bit of forward planning would have saved me a lot of time and messing about.  >:)

Oh @Kenora that sounds frustrating, well done for getting it to work anyway!

@Flobear, looking good, can't wait to see the outcome.

After the learning curve of the first bralette I changed the elastics I was using slightly and sewed up a new version which looks to be wearable. I also made myself a pair of baselayer leggings out of the same fabric - using a leggings pattern traced from a Burda magazine - #130 from Burda Jan 2011

The test wear of the bralette went well so I have another one cut out and shall get sewing that today.
I'm finding even simple lingerie like this has quite a learning curve - the techniques are different to what I normally use.

@SewRuthieSews it looks good, I have made a bra but in the very distant past, I don’t want to do that again but I think a bralette might be good, I think I would like something with wider straps though

Here's the second bralette (not including the initial fairly dodgy test one)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimpbkT8x-TaEmlk36lZvAHFH4aRIXlctIBSIUxXXVs0W1RI00PHApSGb3bz9SHdePhjpaZklOOKx-1RgxtHRyouIwXz2zhCxASzc41wA9xPISIuGUcrYFPmLnLGAoRJzsyNCWoybKbfO0zZRVCrgCHpCu8j2sKwSUDCdGk0SX-HzcoDZmtKHm9DG3drA/s1507/Bralette%20no%202.jpg)
I have enough of the band lace for a third one the same and then I'll put the rest of the fabric away for another time.

Here's my entry

I've made a full slip, using the Free Tammy Handmade pattern I've done a few times before.

The difference this time is that I've lengthened the pattern to make a full slip.  I knew the pattern fitted well so, I had no fitting issues.  I used a remnant of stretch mesh in a yellow cream colour - mainly because I found some bra strap elastic in the same colour.  It looked very plain when I'd finished, so I added a faux hem in a cream satin, and finished with a stretch lace.

I'm very happy with this, although not overly keen on the colour, but as it won't be seen that's OK.  The only thing I don't know, is if it will pass the static test - I will reprt back on that later!

I don't think I'll make the finishing line for this one.

@b15erk , oh Jessie that's beautiful!

@Helen M hope you are feeling better soon.

To all who are nearly finished, but might not make the deadline I have a couple of suggestions
1 - I could allow sewing up to 4th May, which would give just a few more days. Let me know if you would like this.
2 - If even 4th May wouldn't give enough time then you can start a topic about your project in the "What lies beneath..." section of the board (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/board,20.0.html)

I can attach them but can't insert them into the post from the attachments. I don't know if the files are too big - I already turn down the quality when I take photos for here and crop off anything unnecessary. I tried renaming them, while I had my laptop out but that made no difference.

@Ouryve I had that problem with my diary entry of my tunic. I'd never had a problem before & have used it frequently so think there may be a glitch somewhere?

This is my entry: Ouryve

TaTB Iris knickers in mid and high rise, both with mid leg opening plus a matching vest using a free pattern off the So, Zo, What do you know blog.

This was the first time I used fold over elastic so it took some getting used to and I found it hard on my hands. The Jersey was also not as stretchy as I had hoped and was a little wonky, so I had to work around that. The crotch lining is cut from an old t-shirt!

I wasn't happy with the open crotch lining front so I added a seam allowance and worked out how to secure it.

Thanks, @SewRuthieSews, I'm very much in my comfort zone with Jersey but have actively dodged stitch on elastic of any sort, before now!

I am out of my comfort zone with jersey. Have made 2 practice plackets before committing myself. Good thing Saturday is a rubbish telly night!

I'm all placketed out now  :[

There are a few edges to finish off tomorrow but I've had enough for today. I'm having an early night soon because I want to get up for the dawn chorus tomorrow morning. Just a bit of washing up to do and dogs to send out for night-night wees.

I haven't even started but I am going to tackle a slip that has been on the list for years. It needs a FBAand cutting on the bias. Eventually it will go in the Diary.

@Cazlyn it's a piece I bought from fabworks. I bought 3 different jerseys, all pretty cheaply and what they turned out to be after a wash was a complete surprise. This one turned out to be quite usable and, yes, it is very cheerful! I wear a lot of muted colours, these days, so stutching something cute is quite refreshing. (and so much easier on the eyes!)

@SewRuthieSews  thank you I did do a bit more today and now it only needs hemming, it is only really a long tee shirt but the fabric is fun and about 20 years old so time it got made up.

Helen M's entry

A midi length nightdress made from vintage Kwik Sew pattern 1386 that I have had since the early 90s. I used a fairly heavy silvery mauve tricot knit which was one of the suggestions that has been in my stash for a few years. It hangs nicely and feels nice. The scalloped lace is ivory, again from my stash. I made it midi rather than full length.

I made this pattern last about 15 years ago but used a straight edge lace that time. The scalloped lace was a bit tricky as the tricot was a bit slippery to say the least! The arm and neck bands used the ‘stitch in the ditch’ technique. For the hem I used a ‘shell tuck’ stitch.

The instructions were well written with plenty of diagrams and it would seem the pattern dates from 1984 so well and truly vintage. Kwik Sew are no longer available sadly, so it’s a pattern I’ll treat with respect for the future.

Kenora's entry

This is a wearable toile of a nightdress for me. I bought 3 metres of a polyester/satin from Pound Fabrics at £2.50/m and wanted to see how the fabric would behave before I committed to buying something more expensive. In the event, the fabric behaved very nicely although it was fairly slippery to cut, so I used my large 60mm rotary cutter which helped a lot.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The pattern is Butterick 5792 but I only used it for cutting out the fabric. I made the full length View C but without the bottom frill, the lace or the ties. I didn't bother with the instructions as I woudn't have followed them anyway. I'm not a fan of bias binding on garments so I altered the pattern to make the bodice fully lined with self fabric. I cut a size 14 based on the envelope informaton for finished measurements but ended up trimming down to a size 12 after I'd tried it on. The fabric has a tiny amount of lycra in it but it sewed beautifully. I used a 70/11 microtex needle, pale grey Gutermann thread, and a walking foot. I altered my stitch length to a 2.00mm, turned the foot pressure down to 3.5 and didn't backstitch when starting and ending seams, but tied off by hand instead.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I stay-stitched the neck and armholes to prevent stretching while I sewed the pleats on the centre front bodice, then understitched all three areas after joining the lining to the main bodice. A bit over the top, but it made it much easier to turn before top-stitching very close to the edge. I used french seams for the sides, and then joined the lining to those seams by stitching in the ditch.

I've never used this pattern before but I'm fairly happy with it. I would make it again but would alter the back neckline to be as low as the front, which is more what I'm used to. I like the look of the pleats in the front but I'm not sure how comfortable they'll be - I'll know more once I've worn it. It's all about comfort. :)

I'm having a nightmare with nightwear  :boohoo:   My Pfaff won't buttonhole on the jersey fabric nor does it sew the hems neatly but the Bernina, which is very accepting of anything I ask of it, doesn't have a walking foot. Thank goodness the overlocker was overlocking properly yesterday and a few days ago.
Tonight is carefully unpicking the shambolic buttonholey things then maybe I can model (hahahaha) a finished item tomorrow

I was going to enter the pyjama trousers I've made for my OH but decided against as I found the check, which is very large, difficult to match so they look a bit odd.  He's pleased with them and has asked for another couple of pairs.

Blimey, I made it  :faints:

Flobear - entry 1 and only!

Bunny pyjamas. Cotton jersey fabric impulse-bought in Doughty's at least 6 months ago. Guessed at quantities.

Patterns  For trousers used an ancient Style pattern which I adapted once before. Made a nice tidy copy on my new pattern paper  :)  Intended to use Style Arc T-shirt cut a bit bigger for top but decided a placket would be more interesting so treated myself to Itch-to-Stitch Henley top with raglan sleeves.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

A few problems due to my inexperience at using jersey fabrics:
i) Found rotary cutter better for cutting some parts out.
ii) Straight stitching on jersey a nightmare. Needed walking foot but Pfaff skipped stitches. Bernina (no walking foot) sewed nicely but rucked fabric unless tacked to within an inch of its life. Overlocker not keen on woolly nylon in loopers. Pfaff better when a stretch-stitch needle used.

Placket - why  Practised because I hadn't done one for years. Didn't like one method, tried another.
Buttonholes a shambles - Pfaff again. Thought I'd hand-sew but came to my senses and used buttons purely decoratively.
The other non-functioning bit is the dangly thing at the waist. It's so I don't put the trousers on back-to-front!

And here's the finished article, after all that palaver: (nowhere sensible in this house to take photos!)

Ok made it
Made from a piece of fabric from my stash which is probably over 10 years old maybe more, made to an old pattern I adapted years ago, it is really just an overgrown tee shirt.
Very pleased with myself I actually cover stitched the hems, usually I can’t be bothered to change the machine but now it’s downstairs it seemed easier.
