In the wardrobe / Re: Dungarees - guidance welcome

@bec - I love this pattern and have made a couple of pairs; one in cotton and one with an old linen tablecloth; which was quite thick but works well, I don't know how that compares with the beatle fabric though.

Neither had stretch and they worked fine, so I don't think you need to worry on that front.

@Helcat_42 Thanks, I suddenly remembered it also had an oily feel to it and I had to wash my hands thoroughly throughout the process.  The 'fabric' (I use the term loosely) was washed before using and it came out bone dry as it was waterproof and not sure it had removed any of the ickyness.  Although I am sure it will be preserved forever

@Bumblebuncher and also perfect if they wanted to perform it "on ice" :)

@Helcat_42 Beyond any doubt the hardest was this one
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
It was a 'Belle' dress for Beauty and the Beast, boned corset, double pleated skirt and peplum.  Hand beaded and lace hand sewn too.  Took me forever, and all made with some weird kind of waterproof canvas that had cost next to nothing  but was a nightmare to get a needle through.
To make matters worse it was never worn as the performance was cancelled the month before due to a death in the cast and close family members also in it.
It now sits under the stage at the theatre waiting for it's time to shine

That is amazing - but so sad the dress didn't get to go to the ball - at least when required you can do a proper Blue Peter flourish with one you made earlier :)

@Iminei thank you  :love:

Well, I am going to a ball after all, so wanted to make something a bit special.

I had this idea to make a neck ruffle with peacock feathers but I think that might be slightly beyond my skill set ...

@Bumblebuncher Love it - and the trim on the edges. On the previous dress to this one I have started playing with piping on the neckline ...

What's the most difficult costume you had to sew?

How pretty!  It really makes me hanker for my old costuming days.  I made one similar a few years ago although it was made with the cheapest fabric I could find for the stage

Any pictures? I am always keen to find inspiration for the next one ...

It will be re-used as I promenade at the Jane Austen festival every year and this year we are hoping to go to the Country dance as well; but I have in the past made them out of all duvets/curtains (brilliant to get wide enough for the back skirt piece).

I am so grateful for all the advice, and eventually I did manage to determine there was a slight nap. I made sure I cut all the pieces the same way (boy was it fidgety in the cutting out).

It lulled me into a false sense of security whilst sewing the bodice side and the front to the back piece when I attempted to sew it to the cotton lining ... cue a fair amount unpicking, swearing and then tacking to within an inch of its life.

I will say that I am so glad I have a walking foot and also that this silk velvet anyway prefers to be sewn to silk velvet and not anything else; also that slow is better ...

I am pleased with what I have achieved so far, although I do need to straighten then bottom and hem (possibly embelish) and do some hand stitching to make it lie better ...

Thank you all - some really good tips.

I have tried holding it both ways; it's a navy blue velvet (I don't know if that makes a difference)

with other velvet you could tell by brushing it with your finger (i.e. smooth one way, slightly rough on the other) but this just seems soft both way.

Would definitely cut it all the same direction.

I will try the black and white photo and see if that makes a difference.

I have pushed the boat out and ordered some silk velvet to make an overdress for a dress I am making for Secret Cinema does Bridgerton but I am somewhat perplexed.

I have never sewed with silk velvet before (because it's not cheap)

When I have sewed with velvet or velour there is an obvious pile - but I can't work out whether this does has a pile and I can't find it or it doesn't have it - there isn't an obvious change in colour or feel when I run my finger over it ...

Please can someone help me <hopeful face>

I've loved teal for so long, I remember being made fun of at work in the early noughtles when answering "teal" to being asked my favourite colour! It didn't help when the men said, "what's teal?" that I said, "a duck".

However the first thing that came to mind for your outfit, thinking of a period influence, was turquoise and eau de nil. I imagine it could look fabulous stood next to gold and silver. Thinking of sheer beauty rather than power.

I too am a fab of teal - my craft room aka the spare room is has a teal chair/curtains and blanket on the day bed :)

I had to look up eau de nil but it does sound nice ...

What colour would you do on the over-robe in?

I have done a practice overdress in teal (from reduced curtains I bought in dunelm) ...

..That answers my question.  I was going to ask what color your hair was but that doesn't seem to matter. Instead, which flatters your skin tone?

I'm also secretly hoping you'll tart this up with way too much blush. I'm thinking all your colors should be intense.

BTW,  definitely the teal or one of the cobalt. Turquoise is a bit flat, especially with the gold and silver dresses. Teal is just that much richer, more intense.

I generally tend to be some shade of purple or other (have done all the colours of the rainbow - sometimes at the same time); but at the moment more of a red/orange tequilla sunrise affair ...

I had an idea (completely stolen from the Queen Ravenna thread be elisep on "Show Must Go On" Board here) of making a feather collar with peacock feathers ...

Teal, turquoise, peacock are my choices. It depends on the effect you want to go for - I'd go the brighter the better but that's me and my personality, a quieter person may want the more subdued colours. What would you feel happier wearing?

That's a very good question; and links into the other comment re my friends wearing gold and silver.

I am also planning on making sure my hair matches the final colour choice ...

I'm going to throw this out there, mainly because I am awkward, but I prefer the turquoise!  I think the teal may fall into the background next to gold and silver ... and we wouldn't want that would we?
BB

It's like you read my mind

I think with the teal taffeta it is hard to photo as it looks teal or green in different lights. I am worried that the taffeta is too stiff.

I found this beautiful metallic cobalt blue, but by the time I ordered it they had run out :( I can't find it anywhere else ...

I suspect I will end up making a couple of different options.

That's a resounding vote for teal ...

I realised that I didn't put the fabric colours on -
Can I check which one you were referring to when you all said teal?

The colours on the left (which are a velvet effect satin) I was thinking of using to line the overdress.
