Overlockers & Coverstitchers / I Want A New Serger
« on: March 11, 2021, 15:57:00 PM »
My current serger is a White - it's the exact same as the Husqvarna 250S.  I love it but it's 20 years old and has had about a million miles of thread run through it.  And for the first time ever, it started acting up.  I'm not swayed either way to manual thread or air thread.  I've threaded mine from scratch every time since I bought it.  I'm leaning toward another Husqvarna or a Pfaff.  I tried a Bernina 460 and it's not for me.  No one carries Juki around here.

The Show Must Go On / Check out the competition thread
« on: January 16, 2021, 20:40:41 PM »
This month's competition thread is Fit for Purpose - in other words, fitness wear, swim suits, dancewear, etc.  If you're feeling like your stretch fabrics are feeling neglected, maybe we want to take part.

The Show Must Go On / It's Our Turn
« on: June 01, 2020, 19:49:44 PM »
In case you haven't checked out the sewalong & competition section, June is activewear and swimwear.  With all the performances on hold, maybe it's time to dig into our stretch stash.  I probably won't make DD1 and her boyfriend matching workout outfits - eventhough I did threaten/promise.

The Show Must Go On / Back At It
« on: February 12, 2020, 07:10:16 AM »
I just was contacted by the director of the youth company that DD1 belonged to.  She asked me to make 10 pull-on white, romantic tutus.  I'm not sure when she needs them.  I'm happy to be volunteering again.

The Show Must Go On / An Homage to Bad Costumes
« on: November 26, 2019, 17:38:48 PM »
We went over to Vancouver to watch DD1 dance.  For us costumers, who sometimes feel that our work is fleeting, one choreographer created a work to reflect the dancers previous dance performance experiences - favourite moves, most embarassing moment on stage, worst costume, best costume and their transition from ballet to contemporary.  But the most hysterical parts were listening to the dancers speak about their worst costume ever (we had been instructed to laugh if we found it funny).  Near the end, they all put on old recital costumes and proceeded to improv wildly - the one guy in the group was wearing a hot pink figure skating dress with a black lace overlay that was several sizes too small.  A girl who lives in Vancouver provided the old costumes.  Bad costuming never dies - it lives on in the dancer's memories.

The Show Must Go On / What to make for my "broken" dancer
« on: December 18, 2018, 10:37:02 AM »
Well, in true the show must go on style, I need suggestions for what to sew for my "broken" dancer, DD1.  My initial plans were to make up several pieces - shorts, pants, leotards, tops - out of several lovely coordinating lycras.  Back in October, she and another dancer collided in rehearsal - head to head - and knocked themselves out.  Both girls had to withdraw from classes at university and DD1 won't be returning for the spring semester (I don't think the other girl will be returning either).  She has compression of the cervical spine, constant nausea & motion sickness (her balance is off), noise sensitivity and minor vision issues.  She is supposed to exercise but not raise her heart rate above 100 bpm & they're concerned about her low blood pressure (which we've known about for a decade).  Today's visit to the concussion clinic brought the recognition of cognitive issues as well.  She looks fine but she can't really do much - she's too sick to go to the club or bar with her friends - the lights & noise make her symptoms worse.  Truth be told, I really have no idea when she will be able to return to her life or dance.  I don't want to make her feel worse by gifting her something that she can't use and will only remind her of what she is missing.

Christmas pajamas are already underway.  But honestly, I'm confused as to what else to make for her.

A bit of a 'do' / Daughter's Satin Tuxedo Jacket
« on: March 07, 2018, 03:59:01 AM »
My youngest daughter has requested that I make her a satin tuxedo jacket for her highschool graduation.  If it was a ballgown, I'd be less stressed - I haven't made a jacket in 28 years!  I'm making Vogue 2383 with the shawl collar Vogue 2383.  The fabric is a dull, medium weight, black satin with blue abstract flowers.  I need to make it larger in the chest and the arms -a toile is definitely necessary.  She's really strong & muscular - she's a professional timber sports competitor - stronger than alot of men.  I'm busy reading the Threads Sewing Guide, the Singer Tailoring book and Claire Schaeffer's Tailoring Techniques - and trying to sort out what applies to a satin jacket versus a wool jacket.  I'm trying to figure out what kind of interfacing to use and where to use it because I don't think that I need to fuse interfacing to the entire front.  I'm afraid of overthinking this.  Any & all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm new... / Hi There
« on: February 20, 2018, 07:35:28 AM »
I've been sewing for 33 years & I find there is always more to learn.  I was on TSF and spent most of my time on dancewear - booty shorts to tutus.  I'm currently working on a satin tuxedo jacket for DD2 to wear to graduation - it's been longer than I care to think about since I made a jacket.  And I'm teaching a friend's daughter to sew.

It's good to be back after a couple of tough years.
