Vintage Machines / My 930
« on: December 11, 2023, 20:10:53 PM »
I kinda eluded to this in my other thread located here: https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,16823.msg354419.html#msg354419

A couple of weeks ago more or less, I was sitting in my sewingroom handstitching another polar bear for my sweetie pie hubby. All of the sudden I hear sparking and when I turn to look in the direction of the sound I see smoke coming from my Berinia. I am like "What the heck"! This smoking continued for a few minutes but I had quickly unplugged the machine.

I had used the machine just a few minutes before so it was still on. I quickly called the SP/DH to make sure all is alright as far as fire hazard goes then I proceeded to take the covers off to see what in the world was going on.
I couldn't get all the covers off so the SP/DH took over. He discovered that one of the capacitors blew and after searching on the web he found this is very common.

I went to the FB group for Bernina's and found contact info for this guy in Norway that makes 3D parts for (some) vintage machines. He also has capacitors and odds & ends for older machines.

His website: https://3dsewingparts.com/

I was able to communicate with the lady (thru FB messenger) that takes care of that part of the business. She was very responsive and helpful. I placed the order and 2 hours later they had everything ready to ship. I do not know how long it will take for the parts to get to me from Norway but I am in no hurry as I have other projects going and I am sure the holidays will slow everything down.

I will come back hopefully after we have the machine back up and running just to update.

I circled the two capacitors that commonly go "out/fail" and rightfully so considering the age of the machine.

I would like to also add that it's suggested to not replace these capacitors with the same "size" as nowadays there are better ones~ just like everything else these days.

Vintage Machines / My next Project Universal Cleaning
« on: December 10, 2023, 18:57:29 PM »
I am sure I posted about this machine before.
This belonged to my Mother. She purchased new on the 1960’s. I’ve used it a few times but it has been sitting neglected for a few years.
While waiting for capacitors for my Bernina 930 I decided to clean this one and put it to use (maybe). I have never removed the top cover and am kicking myself for this neglect!
I am not going to completely dismantle even though I was sorely tempted. I’ve started the cleaning process and what a job it’s going to be. There were dust bunnies all over the place and T-Rex tar pits!

I vow to never, ever let any of my machines get “bad” like this again.

Advert your eyes if this is too painful to look at :(

In the wardrobe / Bartacks made with straight stitch?
« on: September 28, 2023, 16:34:58 PM »
That’s my question. I know traditional bartacks are made with a zigzag but does anyone make them or seen them made using a straight stitch?

I make jeans for myself and my Bernina struggles a bit with the belt loops and pocket reinforcements. While I can get them made I do not like punishing my machine like that.

I’ve been looking for an industrial but the affordable ones are walking foot straight stitch machines. So, that brings me to my question  :)

Dolls and Toys / This years stuffed critters
« on: September 27, 2023, 21:12:16 PM »
I have 3 Grandkids now and all must have a stuffed critter for Christmas. I know, I know, it's early but I don't want to be caught up in the sewing mania for December.

My plan is to make:
1 teddy bear (I've made several from this pattern) for my newest GGD
1 Sam the dinosaur GGS
1 puppy dog for the GGS's birthday right after the holiday
1 burro GGD

editing to add that I have not made these yet :)

« on: November 28, 2022, 15:28:53 PM »
This is on sale for the next two days and I really want one.

Does anyone have one and what’s your opinion? Any input appreciated

I’ve read thar some of these types of lights go out after a year and that the “bulb “ isn’t replaceable. That is hard to believe at this price but…

The floor lamp is here     https://www.missouriquiltco.com/products/daylight-slimline-3-led-floor-lamp

Tech Know How / Member Diaries and The Darkside Differences
« on: November 21, 2022, 15:22:05 PM »
I did a search in this area of the forum but I am still not getting it.

Can someone explain to me how each “area” is used? Can I start my own thread in Members Diaries and then put whatever I want in it?

I pretty much sew whatever comes my way. Right now it’s bears but tomorrow it might be a BBQ cover and then I may move on to jeans which I sew quite often or knitting Christmas hats. My sewing is scattered so if I were to start one which area would be best suited?

Dolls and Toys / A bear here and a bear there
« on: November 15, 2022, 19:50:23 PM »
I am at the tail end of my 6 bear that turned into 7 bear journey.

Last year I made teddys for my GGS and GGD for X-mas. This year I thought I would make 6 for a rehab facility that my DD works at. Usually during winter they receive a few kids (with their parent(s)). Sometimes these kids have had it pretty rough so I thought some teddy bears might be nice for them to have to cuddle. So that is what I'm doing. CCL donated some nice fabric for some of them (the blue & red bears). She is a sweetheart!

I am on bear number 6 and should have that one sewn and stuffed tomorrow. They all need faces and stuffing holes sewn up. I'm using felt for the eye's and noses since there is no worries about choking on a wayward eye. The mouths will be tricky for me as I HATE handsewing ~ period! I did get some good tips for handsewing at our last zoomalong that should really help me and who knows, maybe even covert me.

At #4 bear my DD mentioned that she might like one for her office so that will be bear #7. My "goal" is to have all 6 ready for her on our Thanksgiving (US) and then she can decide when to give them out. I can't tell you how many times I have pricked my finger! Good grief!

I was going to post some pics but noticed I forgot to pay my "dues"  I better get on that right away!

Patterns Discussion / Kwik Sew 3504 Men's Jeans
« on: June 17, 2022, 20:54:04 PM »
Has anyone used this pattern? How well did it work out for you?

I'm thinking of making a pair of jeans for my sweet DH who has made and fixed lots of sewing things for me. While I've made tons of jeans for myself, I know that fitting men is very different (maybe that is a subject for another post).

I've had this pattern in my stash for 4 to 5 years now and I've had the fabric for them nearly as long. I would like to make this my summer sewing project. I am not sure if I enjoy the challenge of it or I just want to torture myself.

Tech Know How / Can’t find the Like button
« on: June 04, 2022, 16:13:29 PM »
I can’t seem to find the “Like” button. I know there used to be one. Do I need to have more posts before it’s available for me to use?

I’m using an iPad if that helps?

In the wardrobe / Alina Designs Short Pattern
« on: November 02, 2021, 17:48:28 PM »
I plan on buying and printing this pattern later today after I stock up on paper  :D. I noticed that the notions list calls for a plastic coil zipper (or zip to the UK folks :) ). In my mind a plastic zipper in pants/shorts seems like an accident waiting to happen. Are plastic zippers any better than they used to be years ago?

Here's the pattern: https://www.hartsfabric.com/alina-design-co-chi-town-chinos.html.html

Machine Accessories / Buttonholer on Treadle
« on: November 01, 2021, 17:29:33 PM »
I'm going for it! @Turquoise mentioned that she has a automatic buttonholer and that got me started on the hunt for one. I picked up a pretty nice on on Etsy from a real nice lady.

Today, since I have the 66 up and running now, I plan on trying the buttonholer on the treadle. Should be fun and I bet I break some needles. Lots of practice is in my future before I attempt a real one  :o

Anyone, is this picture too big?

Vintage Machines / Sharing my treadles
« on: October 17, 2021, 15:47:44 PM »
I’m new here but wanted to share a couple of cool sewing machines I have. Actually the DH owns one and I the other..

His is a 127 Singer that belonged to his Grandmother who used to do book binding on her farm in Montana. His Mom made his baby clothes on that same machine. She inherited it after her Mom passed and had to get the cabinet refinished. At some point while Grandma had the machine she decided to paint the cabinet orange. She painted most of her furniture orange. Musta been a thing at some point.
Now we have had it for the last 20 years. It had been ages since anyone used it. It was frozen up when we took it over but elbow grease freed it up and boy does it ever sew.

My machine is a Singer 66 Red Eye that I am restoring. I bought it a week ago. The hubby says it’s a boat anchor since it needs a lot of work but has helped me with a couple of things- like getting screws out cause he is good at that as well as opening jars.  This machine was frozen up and the cabinet is damaged. I’ve cleaning the machine head and now it’s waiting for parts. I tore the cabinet apart and am working on getting the finished cleaned up. I can’t wait to see how well it sews. I plan on using them both so they are not going to be decor.
