Patterns Discussion / Looking for Roaring 20's style dress pattern?
« on: March 29, 2024, 11:09:54 AM »
I'm wondering what pattern could you recommend for a Roaring 20's/prohibition style dress? Sleeveless or short sleeves. Must be PDF downloadable (Preferred with A0 file).

Hoping to whip something up for a fancy dress party next week.  :)

In the wardrobe / Mary Quaint Shift Dress
« on: March 09, 2024, 14:07:31 PM »
Ok, so I haven't posted here in a while. I've sew up a lot of things lately. But today was to procrastinate from grading papers and writing report comments for my students. LOL. Only 2 weeks til Easter Holidays!!!

Anyway, I whipped up this Mary Quaint style shift dress. I love this pattern and it's free. I did have to add some back darts to accommodate my swayback. The fabric is all leftover from other projects too. It's quite comfy. Great for work too.

Ok, so maybe a bit of an unusual post... I have 2 questions.

1. Did anyone here take any sort of textiles/fashion/sewing course in their GCSE or A-Levels (Or other High School Sewing classes)? If so, what sort of things did you learn?
2. If you wanted to be able to teach said courses, what diploma or other certification in sewing/textiles/fashion would you recommend? (Preferably not a long 3+ year degree, maybe a 1 year qualification of sorts?).

For context, I am already a QTS teacher with 15 years+ experience. However, I am qualified/experienced teaching Music and English Lit. I've been sewing my whole life and I started a sewing club in my school last year, and the kids loved it (mostly KS3 students), and so did I. I thought, maybe this is something worth getting some formal education so I can actually teach courses? I teach abroad in International schools so I'm not worried about strict rules to teach it, but want to get the actual skills/background to be confident and set my students up for success.

Last question.... if I took some sort of programme based on your recommendations, where might you recommend studying in the EU but taught in English?

In the wardrobe / When to use a Walking foot...
« on: March 07, 2023, 12:11:50 PM »
So I finally got a walking foot.  0_0
I sew a lot of swimwear and the fabric I bought lately seems especially slippy. I'm definitely glad I started using it. Then I thought, do I bother changing it?  So I sewed up a cotton-woven top the other day and left the walking foot on. (Although it didn't feed as straight as without it, it was fine. And maybe that's me just getting used to it.) It was also a little louder than without it.

So... back to the question... Do you change out your walking foot or leave it on most of the time? Is there a fabric or project you shouldn't use it for? Do you prefer your walking foot for non-slippery fabrics? Is there a reason to change it?

Anything else or tips I should know for my shinny new walking foot?  (New toys are fun.)  :D

Access All Accessories / Travel Pack Gift set - seeking ideas
« on: November 29, 2022, 17:02:49 PM »
Hey, so I discovered a passport cover pattern. And I love it. It's a great scrap buster, as I try to sew waste free. I've made 2 so far and think this would make a great gift idea, especially as many of my friends are expats like me.

I think it would be nice to add a zipper pouch, and maybe a sleep mask, making a nice little "travel pack" type of gift. But wondering if there are any other items that might be a quick sew that would add to the travel pack idea. Any thoughts?

The Haberdashery / Sharpening small embroidery/snipping scissors
« on: July 28, 2022, 14:34:09 PM »
So, how do you go about sharpening those small scissors? I find my scissors aren't very precise anymore and when trying to snip curves and such. I'd like a nice sharp point. Any ideas?

In the wardrobe / Night out dress
« on: May 05, 2022, 13:35:37 PM »
So, I've been mostly sewing work apparel lately and I decided I needed a new night-out dress. I tend to dress way more casually going out since the pandemic and hoping to get back to more fun clothes.  Friday night's gonna be fun.

In the wardrobe / Latest projects...
« on: April 08, 2022, 11:05:05 AM »
Ok, thought I should share... I've been sewing a few things, but I don't have pics of it all. And some are toiles that need to be adjusted to get it right.  Anyway, I love this new blouse pattern (new=first time i made it). It's the Norma Blouse from Fibre Mood. And the fabric is local, and I love that this fabric is very affordable.

Also as I am a diver, I make my own socks to wear under my neoprene boots. And now many of my friends want them so I'm sewing for them too...haha. They're super easy to whip up. But sourcing swim fabric here in Borneo isn't easy.

Sewing Machines / My new Machine
« on: October 17, 2021, 13:46:03 PM »
I don't know where else to share my excitement but here, so I hope you can share my excitement.  I bought a new machine. Weee!!!

I found it very interesting to go machine shopping in Borneo, Malaysia. I considered online, but I heard nightmares about damaged stuff and would likely have problems with servicing. Plus I'm a huge fan of shopping local if possible (and in this case, not national, but local to the state and/or the island). So I discovered there are basically only 2 shops (I think some closed down with covid.) There's a Singer dealer, and a Brother dealer...lol. That's it. But I had tons of time in 2 different quarantines to research, and research, and, well, more research. So I was ready in the even I couldn't get the Juki I wanted. Despite all the "challenges", I actually think I couldn't have picked a better machine, even with all the options out there.

Anyway, here she is.... she's a Brother Innov-is A80. So shiny and pretty. She needs a name.   Open to suggestions.  :D

In the wardrobe / Work Wear
« on: October 05, 2021, 14:56:48 PM »
Ok, so when I joined this fab forum, back in June? I think. I wanted to share things I made, but just hadn't the time. Then I moved, countries. A couple quarantines, house hunting, visa application, etc. All while working online. Anyway, I'm just barely settled into my new place. With a new sewing room, awaiting a sewing machine...lol.  :sew:

So it's sharing time! Even though I rekindled my love of sewing about 6-7 years ago with swim and dive wear, I most recently got into sewing clothes for work. I was living in Switzerland back in June and made most of these outfits while there on my landlord's Pfaff (what a great machine.) So I though I'd share some of the outfits I made and wore to work. I now live in a warmer climate so some of these may need adjusting.  As you can see, I'm a music teacher. Totally a little cheesy with the pics. Haha.  0_0

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / New Sewing Space
« on: October 05, 2021, 14:17:39 PM »
So I'm sooooo excited. I just moved into my new condo. And I have a sewing room!!!  First time ever to have a dedicated sewing room. It's just an iron and ironing board at the moment. I am about to order a desk. I hope to borrow a sewing machine until I can hunt for my new machine.  :vintage: I didn't get to bring much with me, so I will have to take my time and spend wisely. Here's the space I'll be filling up.

Hi, I'm new... / Hi From Switzerland, and soon Malaysia
« on: June 06, 2021, 12:06:21 PM »
Hi,
I'm Kristel and super excited to find a sewing community not of FB.
A bit about me: I have been sewing most of my life on and off. Taught by my Mom. <3 I'm an international teacher, and when I started abroad I didn't sew much. But then I became a scuba instructor and found the rash guards and bathing suits to be super expensive, so I bought a machine  :sew: and started sewing again. But now I make all my work (teaching) clothes and my swim/diving attire. I've really been upping my sewing game over the covid times. Anyway, I'm currently in Switzerland moving over the summer to Malaysia for a new job and will get to set up a new sewing space. I'll be looking for all the advice I can get.

Anyway, so thanks for the approval and I look forward to meeting y'all.  :toast:
