Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Re: New overlocker tips
« on: March 01, 2024, 08:35:00 AM »
I had a Janome 6234XL for several years and it was a very good machine. I moved it on last year, when I bought a Bernina and I've really noticed the difference. The Bernina is so much quieter and less fiddly to thread the lower looper. It also had a useful extension table.

My mum had an Elna Lotus when I was a teenager. It superseded her Singer treadle. I used it for my Needlework O'level (textiles nowadays). When I left school I made lots of stuff on it. It never had any issues.

Alterations Advice Please / Re: Mending a tear
« on: February 12, 2024, 20:39:52 PM »
@SewRuthieSews I didn't have any problems with the tear leaking. I did undo some of the lining so that I could make the repair and I made sure that the tear was really well pulled together. The GoreTex link that you've posted looks like a really good solution.

Alterations Advice Please / Re: Mending a tear

I used iron on interfacing when a falling tree branch caught the back of a waterproof jacket that I was wearing. It made an
L-shaped tear. I ironed the interfacing on from  the inside of the jacket so that I didn't damage the outside with the iron.

Technical Help / Re: question about drag lines
« on: February 11, 2024, 19:16:21 PM »
The fit of the dress on the model doesn't look great. The darts end right over the bust apex and are not well finished. Hence the puckering at the ends.
The pic you show of the drag lines appears to be at the back of the dress. My immediate thought is as @Ohsewsimple says that there is too much fabric. I would look at a narrow back adjustment.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Re: Bernina 570 For Sale

That's  an amazing price. A year ago I would have been chomping at the bit but I've since purchased a 7 series. I'm sure you'll sell it very quickly.

Vintage Machines / Re: Guess what I have part II

Threading from right to left is correct for this machine. The take up lever needs to be at its topmost position before you raise the presser foot.

Embroidery Machines / Re: Elvistoo's new owner - finding her way

I think you did very well for your first solo run. I like your green man. Just a note - where you've got the longish jump stitches, they can be automatically cut in your settings. Page E-32 :)
Isn't it quite satisfying to watch these machines?

I've altered, traced and cut the fabric for a skirt today. I cut one out yesterday as well - different pattern.  I'm trying to have a few things cut out so that I can sew in small chunks of time: two skirts and a blouse so far.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Fabric for men's PJ's
« on: November 01, 2023, 13:58:22 PM »
I agree with what @Ouryve says.  I recently bought good quality cotton jersey for a couple of sets of PJs and I could definitely have bought RTW for less.  I'm just fussy about the length of the bottoms (I like them very long and to stay that way after tumble drying), plus I wanted to make PJs.  I've bought cheaper fabric for PJs in the past and really disliked the quality and feel.

I would find it quite strange to sew without an extension table. My Pfaff is set into a Horn cabinet, which gives me plenty of room to lay my fabrics and my Bernina came with a good sized extension table. I also find the one on my Bernina overlocker invaluable. The only time I take them off for sewing is if I need to use the free-arm. I guess it's personal preference and what we get used to.
