I've done a daft thing. :[
My friend was saying recently that as each member of her family married, granny made them a quilt but as she didn't marry, she didn't get one. 'I'll make you one' says I. Ha Ha we laughed...but the seed was sown.
I Pintertested for some ideas and saw stained glass quilts which look lovely. I'll have me some of that I thought. For the past week I have cut out each different sized piece from 11 FQs with scissors. SCISSORS!!! Everything from 2.5"x2.5" to 11"x1.5" No stacking and whacking here m'ladies. Last night I cut 1 statute mile of 1" black "lead" and just before I went completely boggle eyed, I checked the piecing diagrams. 8) I might need another mile. -<
Did you ever think you'd have been better just doing wee squares?! 0_0

I'm using Craftsy Botanical batiks so I'm hoping that it'll look like light shining through. Only trouble is that having used a mix of light and dark tones, I didn't know where each piece was going to end up in the final piece. One of my panels looks a bit wishy washy so I can foresee some shuffling. 8)
I'm a rubbish friend. I'm looking at her in a whole new light since she's given me all this aggro! Of course it's a secret so she doesn't know!!! 0_0

Yes @Iminei! Scissors! And a pempcil, and lil bits of paper template to lay out on the FQ to make sure I had enough and best use of acreage.... I have to say they were brilliant for when I was tired and hallucinating. If the paper didn't match then it was wrong...mostly. :)
I'm quite enjoying it so far but then I haven't started sewing yet...

It sounds like it's going to be gorgeous when it's done. I've no idea how these are made so I don't know how awkward they are to do.

So do I and the Leading was difficult, however you are doing straight lines Wrenkies so that should be a whole lot easier.
This is what I made, it became a cushion cover, a gift for a friend.
To be honest, I wouldnt bother with that pattern cutting bias binding, I would just add narrow black sashing, but then again, what do I know?!

I have a beautiful stained glass window quilt my Auntie Joy made for me in 2015. I love it so much. It takes up most of the upper part of one wall in my living room.

I'm not a quilter so I don't really know how its done. I just think it is absolutely gorgeous and it brings me great joy every day I see it.

I hinted she should make some co-ordinating cushion covers for the sofa (which is underneath) and she flat out refused! So I imagine it was a huge amount of work.
Did I mention I love mine and appreciate so much all of the hard work and artistry that went into it.

@SewRuthieSews I'm glad you shared this. The other day I was reading one of the Darkside threads and thought these Peeps really needed to see that quilt. Oh wait! You had put a photo of something up and a corner of this quilt showed. Was that the jacket? Foggy mind must figure it out.
@wrenkins that will be wonderful. How are you attaching the leading? I've not done it, too lazy, but what I've seen used is a fusible bias tape by Clover. It's pricey so I wimped out. They, Clover also make a fusible bias tape maker. If you hold your mouth just right you can use a twin needle to stitch it all down which makes it look really wonderful.
As you're doing straight lines you could cut strips of a lightweight fusible and make your own bias, although it doesn't even need to be bias. Unless, of course, those two miles you've cut already are bias. In which case it must be bias! :D

@Sewingsue @Iminei I am fully aware how lucky I am, and can only guess at the hours of work which went into the quilt.
@Renegade Sewist yes I took my zipper jacket pictures in the living room and in one or two you can see the quilt a bit.
Here's one of the shots without the quilt cropped out. It goes pretty much up to the ceiling.

@SewRuthieSews that is absolutely mind blowing. Her colour choices are fab. Thankfully my pal wouldn't know a sewing machine from a hole in the wall and she's unlikely to see Auntie Joy's handiwork so she'll not realise my effort is Stained Glass 101 (or should that be Stained Glass; an introduction.) 0_0
There will be no bias, no bendy bits, no complicated stuff....the lead is incorporated in the putting together of the individual blocks so hardly any thinking either. I'm going to chain piece but with 1" wide black and then cut to size at the end. If you think I'm going to be footerin' about with postage stamps of black stuff you have another think coming!

Progress report.
So far this morning I have caught up on my correspondence (been on here :[), chomped on a goodly portion of suitcase sized Galaxy (other chocolate is available but isn't as good), laid out the three large blocks and, as predicted, done a bit of swapping around to even out the paler colours. I have too many! >< I had a feeling that might be the case but it's too late now. It's cut and looks ok but not just as dramatic as I would have liked. If it looks too like Dolly Mixtures (other sweeties are available and are much better) I'll ditch the sugary pink and replace it with something else.

Now I'm wondering if I need to add 'stained glass window' quilt on my must-try list. I'm really liking the idea but I'll stick with straight lines.
Must add that I'm more than just a bit jealous of @SewRuthieSews beautiful quilt. <3

I was working on my wibbly wobbly scrappy quilt at craft club today and one of the ladies wanted a photo of it! and then she showed me lots of photos of her work including a couple of stained glass quilts, very similar to the one @wrenkins is making. The more successful one was made from batiks and splodgy dyed fabrics and I do think that is the secret to making them look good, you need fabrics with bits of light splodged in to really make it look as though the outside light is streaming in through it.

That's what I noticed @BrendaP. I normally struggle to use batiks effectively but I think they were definitely the way to go with this project.

Would some more close up photos of Joy's quilt be of interest?
I had a look today and it uses a variety of fabrics, some plain coloured and some which look batik or hand dyed.
It was based on a real window in the Sagrada Familia so Joy was trying to match the shapes and colours of that.
(The more I look at it and think about what was involved the more amazed I am, thanks for giving me the prompt)

@Iminei it is lifesize , they are 30-50" tall. We had a school trip to Flamingo Park once. I think they were the bigger ones.

There are Flamingos in lakes near us and they are magnificent en masse, although I've never been close enough to see how tall they are.
On seeing one in flight, my grandson said it was like a stick with wings. :D

Faff is one way of putting it!
I started sewing last night. On and on it went and I didn't even complete the first block. Mind you I did two halfa blocks so I suppose that's not bad. (I was deeply distressed distracted by the football on the radio).
There was a minor incident with my tension knob but I mended it with a tin of kidney beans and my lil old lady just hammered away like always. :loveit:
I'll just keep going. Lucky it's for someone else or it might become a UFO. :S

Last night I completed two of the large blocks and they look not too bad at all. They even measure almost exactly 11"x22". :o One is a tiny smidge under at one corner. My gob is smacked!
My lil old sewing machine is great. No hopping or skipping over bulky seams. Just bang bang bang...done!

I did that with the HSTathon, crossing out the blocks as I went, I found it very useful especially as each block was (meant to be and probably is) different from the others.

It was quite a long time ago now ... and it took 203 days in total (obvs not every day) but I distinctly remember Imself coming in from work to find me binding the beast and saying ... My God! its actually going to get finished!
The thread bin was an interesting experience as I went along ... when it was full and I emptied it, all these glorious colours of the rainbow spilled out !! I really should have done something wonderful with them somehow but I didnt !
And as for the colour gradients, you can thank Brenda the Goddess of Colour for that!
When I started and proudly showed off the 6 reds/oranges I chosen, she gently suggested I might just need a few more, I added 2, then another few and then some more and in the end I think there were ... around ... 66 different coloured fabrics used.
When it came to exhibiting at FOQ I had to beef up the quilting too!

I finished another block last night and it just wouldn't line up no matter how much I pulled and stretched at it. :[ I had mixed up my 11"x 2" with my 11"x1.5" and when I tried to join the ends they weren't having it.
Let the ripping commence! :(
It's all sewn back together again otherwise I'd have just thrown the whole lot in the corner. I'm not sure I have the temperament for this carry on. :angry:
I am now in my other house with my newish-to-me sewing machine so this'll be fun. We're still circling each other paso doble style and getting to know each other's funny wee ways. (Obviously I don't have any but my machine is as odd as bed@mmned). ><
I was joining in with the 'brothers are cr@p' conversation on another thread. I so hope this isn't true of sewing machines cos guess what I bought.... :[
I'd better get the decks cleared or nothing will happen.

Be careful Wrenkies ... different sewing machines often have different 1/4" seams!
but how nice to have another house, I could really do with one of those!

I was thinking about that as I was typing @Iminei. It doesn't matter what size my seams are as long as they're consistant... was going round in my head. I couldn't believe it when those enormous blocks came up he right size. I'm usually a smidge under so I'll do a wee tester before I make a mess. I must admit though, my accuracy is shocking for such a fussy old bat. :S
I need to work on my patience (what patience?).

Mine's a wee ordinary FS130QC @Lowena. I bought it just as a second machine because my Singer is old school and even though it wasn't high end when I bought it, it has lasted nearly 40 years and is still banging away despite my best efforts to pull it apart. It weighs an absolute tonne and when I hoof it up onto the table I can't believe I carried it home in it's box! Two buses and a fair amount of walking in four inch heels if I recall. :S
My Brother is so light in comparison. It has 130 stitch settings, none of which I've used so far, but it came with a walking foot and an automatic needle threader. Both very useful once you get the hang of the threader.

FYI I have a 130 (as a 3rd or 4th machine :|) as well. It is light and compact and very useful for nomad sewing!

It very nearly became my third machine t'other day @annieeg. I pulled the tension doodahs off my old Singer and had a Janome in my SMD basket complete with spare bobbins and a carry bag before the bits hit the floor! >< I haven't looked at it since I fixed my own machine as the temptation might be too much! :S

Last night, in a sudden burst of activity, I nearly sewed five blocks. They have to be done in stages to incorporate the black so another frenzy tonight and they may be complete! Who knows?
If it doesn't get finished I'll blame @Ploshkin who put up the Stilandstoff link. I had my basket filled to overflowing yesterday and this morning I tipped it out and started again with other stuff. What a brilliant site. :loveit: I'm going to sew the Lynn hoodie without the hood. That's the plan...
