What lies beneath... / Shortening a vest.
« on: February 18, 2021, 17:16:21 PM »
Wondering if you could advise me.....  the housebound woman I visit had me shorten a vest for her - it is one like this in off white/ivory 50%polyester 50% viscose....the usual pointinelle fabric.
https://www.marksandspencer.com/2-pack-thermal-pointelle-vests/p/clp60273631#&gid=1&pid=5
I have already shortened one by retaining the original hem and folding in the excess length.  Then stitched on the line of stitching at the hem.....whilst it was shortened yes I wasn't that happy with it - what I did after that row of 'stretch' stitching was to trim off the excess fold with pinking shears....I felt it wasn't 'tidy enough' and did a row of zig zag around it which I felt made it too firm.
Please take into account that I do not have anything only a basic machine with stretch stitch.
Can you advise me a better way to deal with the rest of the vests to retain the soft hem.  I wondered if there was a stretch elastic lacey thing which I might attach should I cut off the excess length and go from there and forget about retaining the original hem.  Hope you can understand where I am coming from.  Thanks in advance.

A Good Yarn / Eden Cottage Yarns
« on: November 28, 2020, 14:35:53 PM »
Wondering if any of you have used this British company's yarn. https://www.edencottageyarns.co.uk/collections/milburn-dk/products/milburn-dk-british-bluefaced-leicester-silk-in-fern-50g-ball

Over lockdown I have knitted two gilets - cheapo acrylic yarn - neither of them are yet washed but pilling like mad - then a sweater in 50% wool and 50% Acrylic and it is not washed yet and the sleeves are pilling too.

I have a great liking for expensive yarn...mainly because of the non pilling qualities......I have knitted some of my other things in Malabrigo or Fyberspates and they do not pill at as yet and they are a few years old and washed over and over as necessary.  Have also used Posh Yarn (Wales) as well but I yearn for a solid yarn for a couple of items and googled British hand dyed yarn and came across ECY as it's called.  There are some lovely solids as well  in at least 3 colours I like....
I am knitting a Malabrigo Rios (Diana colourway) gilet at the moment - the colours are an absolute delight - like Noro only better - searching for a lovely green to knit a plain sweater to go with it or contrast with this colourful item....would like to get yarn ordered so I can have something lovely to start when I finish this one - it is aran weight, knitting in a basket-type stich for texture........and I am just now off to knit some more of the front rib.
Had a booklet/catalogue from a firm called James Alexander today with rather expensive clothing and gifts therein.  Saw a moss stitch gilet with zip - torn out the page to keep for a future project.  The knitwear in this pamphlet was very expensive so it doesn't feel so bad to spend £70 on yarn and I don't count my time when it is for myself.

Access All Accessories / Readymade Piping
« on: August 10, 2020, 22:50:39 PM »
Can I enquire if any of you have a good recommendation for this.  The dress which I feel is a tad short has already got a false hem....can't even remember how that happened....but I do have enough fabric for another false hem which I will have to piece together....thinking of taking off the original false hem which is the correct length....then adding a little piping and adding the original false hem and then the pieced false hem....gosh that all reads daft - or does anyone else have any other ideas?  The fabric is very jazzy and colourful...a lot of brights offset with a lot of greens.
Is what I am thinking of a good idea or not?  Thanks.

I never thought I'd be posting in this thread but this mug rug thingy has served to create some interest in me.
What I need are your recommendations for fabric in the U.K.  I have got a Moda  charm pack from Cotton Patch....but I really would like to know where the most economic place to buy is - one that gives quick turn around for orders plus
what is the ultimate quality fabric on offer....really tasteful fabric, regardless of price.
Thanks, I know you will help me on this journey !!

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / FQQ
« on: August 12, 2019, 11:32:16 AM »
As you all know I am not a quilter or a patchwork person.....but just heard on Saturday that a woman from our church whom I know well and know her wonderful quilting work had a quilt at FQQ - wondering if any of you noticed this quilt which was all the books of the Bible depicted sitting on shelves.  I've seen it many times as she brought it to our church hall for different exhibitions.  I understand she got Judges' choice - not often someone from over here even goes over there...or maybe I've just not heard of them.
Her work is outstanding - she decorates a window for Harvest Thanksgiving with all sorts of quilting and hand made 'fruits and veg'.  She is also a Paediatric Doctor and is battling cancer  at the moment, also looking after a frail mother.  Despite this she gets time to be creative.

Fun with Fabric / Using knit pattern for woven fabric?
« on: May 18, 2019, 22:10:46 PM »
Can this be done successfully - can't seem to find any guidlines.  You tube will give me the opposite.
You see I have a pattern for a top with 'sleeves' which are the elongation of the shoulders.
Can I use it for woven fabric - what are the restrictions if any.  Thanks.
Sorry if this is not the right place to post.

Fun with Fabric / Searching for some fabric like the link.
« on: May 10, 2019, 14:33:14 PM »
https://www.peterhahn.co.uk/peter-hahn-shirt-style-blouse-orange-multi-coloured-726425.html

I don't normally go for busy like the above fabric but I would like something similar (or the same!) as it offers lots of colours to go with lots of items.
Have been searching but nothing found quite like it (it's cotton voile but ordinary cotton ok).
Just wondering if any of you recognise it from when you were browsing fabric, you are all much more knowledgeable than me.
Thanks.

Technical Help / Advice needed
« on: May 02, 2019, 17:11:30 PM »
Well, I bought a Basler 'blouse' on ebay which is just my style.  It is blue and white striped, two zipped pockets on the breast and  turn up on the short sleeves with tabs.
It has turned out to be more like a soft jacket to be honest..the fabric is 'heavy'....and whilst I need the size at the hem to cover my tummy I have  narrow  shoulders.  It also has thin shoulder pads.
My question is this.....if I rip out the sleeves and cut around the armhole to narrow the shoulder a little will the existing sleeve still be large enough to sew back on the new shape?    My own answer is probably not  but I'd like to hear what you think. If I did rip out the sleeve could I also take in the shoulder seam at that time or would that affect the drape.   If not removing the sleeve etc  then I may just take in the sleeve seam and a little of the side seam ending up before my tummy bump....that would be the simple way but that still leaves me with wider shoulders than I'd want.
The alternative is to re-sell but I love the blouse with it's collar and would like to keep it.
Whilst my mother was super at alterations I am not!  Hence I am wondering should I or should I not?
Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Fun with Fabric / Polyester Chiffon
« on: February 17, 2018, 20:31:38 PM »
I'm considering buying some of this
https://www.fabworks.co.uk/collections/avoca/products/sketchy-multi-floral.

Will be making a dress or top and skirt to look like a dress.....wondering if it would prove to be the devil to sew....please advise.  I'm not an amateur but not highly experienced either.

Mainly I will wear it with an ivory/cream dressy jacket and wanted a bit of colour and these colours are spot on for me.

What lies beneath... / top for pj top in stretch fabric
« on: February 07, 2018, 12:12:06 PM »
I had cotton jersey to make pj bottoms - did those last night....now am wondering if I can get a sort of a top with short sleeves out of what's left.  I can get the front and back on the grain line on the fold....my question is....would you cut out sleeves NOT on the grainline to get some sort of a sleeve.  This is a pj top...not fine fashion.....but would it be comfy?  Thanks.

I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Lidl offers
« on: August 01, 2017, 12:38:44 PM »
Was in Lidl this morning - see they have a singer at £79.99 - not interested in that but lots of sewing threads and sets if you are interested .....I honestly prefer good thread in my machine - maybe if I had an overlocker I might be interested in cones....but I won't have one - enough to cope with without having to learn how to thread those pernickey things if I am reading you folks correctly.
