Title: The Sewing Place's Project Linus Quilt Challenge
Post by: Iminei on April 02, 2018, 12:14:39 PM
Right Girls,

There are 4 months until the Festival of Quilts and you mentioned you would like to make a Linus Quilt as part of The Darkside's year of Events, so here we go ......

The Sewing Place's Project Linus Quilt Challenge

Project Linus (http://projectlinusuk.org.uk/) have an excellent website
which tells you everything you need to know but basically we are looking to
make and donate quilts in one of these three sizes ....

Lap quilt – 36″ square
Cot quilt – 47″ x 55″
Single bed quilt – 55″ x 79″

I intend to take them up to the Project Linus stand at FOQ this year,
but you may take yours up yourself if you so wish.

The deadline for getting the quilts to me will therefore be the 2nd of August 2018.
This gives you a full four months to make your quilt.

To give a sense of uniformity for The Sewing Place's quilts,

we would each make a quilt in just TWO colours ...
plus a neutral background colour of Black, White or Grey if desired.

The Main colour and its Complimentary partner ... eg

Red and Green,
Yellow and Violet,
Blue and Orange etc.

These colours will be randomly allocated by draw to each participant on Monday 9th April 2018
and the rest is up to you ....You choose the size, pattern, and technique(s) used.

There will be a common color for the binding of your chosen neutral background colour or Black,
if no background colour was used, as that will frame and emphasise the lovely bold colour combinations.

The Gals at Project Linus will remove any labels to ensure complete anonymity,
so lets save them the trouble ... No labels please! :(

Send Pics of your finished quilt to me at  iminei@thesewingplace.org.uk before the end of July

and we will have an anonymous vote for the Best Quilt with the winner receiving an exclusive The Sewing Place Prize Winners badge.

Closing date for Entries is Sunday 8th April at Midnight (GMT)

and the  colour combos will be drawn and allocated on Monday 9th April

That's it (I think) So Sign up here ......

A couple of questions before I commit to this.

Just two colours:

Can it be a dozen different reds and a dozen different greens (or whichever pairs of compementaries) or are you thinking of just two fabrics?

Lap quilt – 36″ square
Cot quilt – 47″ x 55″
Single bed quilt – 55″ x 79″

Are those sizes set to within a couple of mm?  Only the 36"x36" will work with square blocks or square blocks plus even width sashing.  The other sizes would need either uneven borders or some other way of getting the exact size.

I don't know about @Iminei  ( this seems to be her baby ) @BrendaP  but Linus aren't super fussy about sizing  :) In fact I send any size, rectangular or square, as long as it roughly fits the bill
I was wondering the same - does it have to be only 2 fabrics, or many fabrics so long as they are shades of the requisite colours?

Ladies, Ladies

I knew I would cause confusion with this colour thang!

@BrendaP  .... I was taught by an expert ... so Yes, you are quite correct .....

use as many Blues and Reds that fit the bill,
as many shades of Turquoise and Magenta to make the quilt sing
as many hues of Lime and Purple to make your eyes cross ...

whichever colours are dead opposite each other on the colour wheel

The sizes are taken from Project Linus's website; I don't imagine the PL organizers will be standing next to their stand with a tape measure  and if you are an inch or two off from the sizes, they sling your quilt into a skip behind a curtain !!

@Efemera .... You also have your neutral, honey! So that makes 3 ... sort of.

I chose this idea as I think they will be visually arresting and if  each of us do one colour combination I think the Quilts will look a bit like a bigger version of The HSTathon ...

Yes, I'm in.

I think I know what I'll be doing,    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
This quilt is 36" wide, so making just one O or one X with the border all around should be 36" x 36".

I just need to know which colours I will be using.

What are those thingmys on top of your bedheadhanging Brenda???

Lil Yetis??? Lil Owls???

and did you make them ???

Also you are a very naughty Girl!!!! Report to the Headmaster immediately!

It would be a good idea not to show our quilts in this thread so that the competition at the end can be truly anonymous!!!

I will close entry for this on Sunday 8th April at Midnight and then draw the colour combos on the Monday Ok???

Can't wait! I love the idea of using directly opposite colours, they should look really funky  :D May or may not use a neutral, depends which colours are thrown my way @Iminei .......don't you dare  Actually, I wouldn't mind, as I could interpret  :x as I wanted  :P

Think I'll pass on this one too. :'(  I'm with @Efemera  on colour - I get inspired by being able to group multiple colours together.  I've recently sent off 3 quilts to Project Linus so I don't feel too guilty. :) I'm still waiting to feel well enough to get out and buy fabric for the cushion swap too - everything is happening at snail's pace here.

Post by: StitchinTime on April 03, 2018, 13:59:03 PM
I think I might have to wait until I have had chance to check my stash before saying yes to this. I am trying to use up my stash and don't particularly want to have to buy more fabric if I didn't have enough of the colours assigned to me.

I'd be happy to keep to the colour limitations, but would quite like the option of being able to pick which two colours to use based on what I have to hand.

The "bedhanging' actually gets used as a full length snuggle quilt!  It's shown draped across the back of the sofa.  Above it is a draft excluder which is in the form of a row of owls.  It was a pre-printed panel bought ages ago in a closing down sale.  The front is as you see it and the back is printed with the backs of the owls.  Really easy to make up, just stitched around leaving a gap, turned right side out and poked the stuffing in.

I might have to re-think on the design.  Actually it might change once I know which colours I'll be using.  If I get purple and yellow it will need a lot more purple than yellow but if I get red and green it should be about half and half.

That's because yellow is the lightest and brightest colour.  Purple (at full strength) is the darkest.  They come opposite to each other on the colour wheel, and the colours in between gradate.

A bit more about it

Hi, I would love to do a quilt for this. I do have one ‘ unclaimed ‘ quilt looking for a home, but it is not two tone. If I get time and finish all my other sewing projects before July , I’ll try to do something simple. I’ve never restricted myself to just two colours before, so it should be different.

I had a look through some books yesterday evening and found four possibilities.  A couple of them are shown as just light and dark, or light dark and mid tone.  That would translate to two colours or two colours and a neutral.  Within each colour, of course, I will use as many different fabrics as possible.  Most of my P&Q stash is blender fabrics and small overall patterns, I buy by colour rather than pattern.

Ok, I’m inspired- no time like the present. Today’s activities have been cancelled due to snow, so I’ve decided on a red and aqua scrappy quilt with L blocks . Nice and simple. Off to raid my scrap box and sew some blocks !

It worked beautifully and inspired the idea for the two complimentary colours! (was it really summer of 2015!!!!!!!)

Remember you can use as many different tones, shades, tints, and fabrics within your allocated colour range as you like or just the two!!!! Your choice!

Apologies headmistress, will keep my fingers crossed. DH always  asks why I have to do something as soon as I’ve thought of it: it is a bit of a failing! I will be away on holiday on Monday, but if this weather keeps up, I may have finished the top by then. I’m just doing a 36” one.

However , have just emailed Project Linus about the other quilt I have. Made it purely from scraps and just for something to do when I had no projects on the go. Somehow the backing ended up very wonky (off square) , but I don’t suppose a child will mind. The front is ok with lots of interesting things to look at .

DH always  asks why I have to do something as soon as I’ve thought of it:

Imself always asks the same as well ... and the answer is simple ... otherwise I will forget!!!

He also asks why I expect him to do things as soon as I ask him too ...
but that's because that is when I want/need it done and otherwise he will forget!!!   0_0

Do they have Project Linus in other countries?  It would be good if our overseas friends could join in.

We do indeed! Project Linus started in Denver, Colorado, USA. There's a chapter locally, ladies that meet monthly to sew for it and several shops act as drop off locations.

I'm not sure. I was just at the main US site and they are very fussy. Absolutely no animal hair and they instruct coordinators to pitch quilts with any on it. They said recent studies show washing does not remove the contaminants and may make matters worse.!  :S We have cats. I find it impossible to keep anything 100% fur free.

This challenge has been calling to me since I said I'd give it a miss - I've been thinking about it all weekend .... what I technique I could do, how I could use colour, and so on. I was almost on the verge of giving in and signing up, but now I've had my mind made up for me. I've been asked to make a quilt for a charity raffle and, knowing the speed I work (think snail at full pelt  :S), I've realised I just wouldn't have time to complete both. So, reluctantly now, and finally, I shan't be able to take part. :'(

I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone will come up with as using only two colours is quite a challenge. I'm sure there are going to be some amazing quilts. :)

Thank you Imi for my colours.

I have a little confession - I was too impatient to get started and soI have already made one top.  I've got a pile of fabrics ready to choose from for the second one so that they are the colours chosen by Imi, but guess what the first one is exactly what was allocated so the second one will be ?? and??.

If anyone needs black fabric for binding, I have various options in my stash and would be happy to send a piece for you to cut your own binding if you let me know how much you need. I can dig out the various options and post photos if anyone is interested.

I read my message this morning and thought oh dear, but after 40 mins thinking time whilst on the treadmill at the gym I have hatched a cunning plan.

I've checked my stash and am quite surprised how much of the correct colour fabrics I have.

If I can do 3 or 4blocks a week, that should give me time for layering and quilting.

Paper and crayons time tonight before I forget what I have planned.

It's exciting, isn't it? And I'm not even taking part - but I can just imagine everyone choosing their colour combos and holding them up to see if they work - great fun. :) I'm looking forward to seeing the results - but it's a looooong wait.

So I've pulled out any fabric that could be X or Y and laid them out.  I eliminated any that weren't right.  Have ended up with one definite, one almost and a maybe.  I think my problem is that I don't have enough fabric.   :D

Visited two fabric shops yesterday and bought some fabric that was neither X nor Y.

I’ve found a pattern, raided my stash and pulled out all the fabrics in my allocated colours, and made a test block. It looks as though my plan will work so only another thirty something blocks to go.

I've been busy all weekend and now have a quilt top.  It's quite a simple pattern, just two small blocks but in different colour arrangements, and would you belive it, I managed to keep getting them in the wrong order, so quite a bit of unpicking :S

But it's ready now for making up the sandwich and thinking about how to quilt it.

I've decided on a pattern (at last), number 14 on my 'To Do' list.  Now I'm trying to resist the temptation to get cutting before I've finished my cushion cover.  That X and Y fabric is calling to me from across the room.  Maybe just one block, just to make sure.

If you're undecided about a pattern, they do have some suggested ideas on the project Linus website.

I've made about 3/4 of a top. Still unsure of it though. It may be put aside and started again.

Despite the lovely weather here today I've been indoors crawling around on hands and knees to get it layered up and then spent all evening in front of the sewing machine  :vintage: and I have it quilted  0_0  Mostly in the ditch and a bit of corner to corner across squares, nothing very fancy and far from perfect but it's quilted.  Only the binding to do now.

Fantastic Girls, fantastic!

Labels

If you are going to sew your label in yourself .....

Please send me a piece of your background/binding fabric so I can make your label .... .....

If you are sending me your quilt to take to FOQ ....

Please leave a 12" strip of binding un-sewn and send a piece of your B/B fabric along with your quilt.

An A4 sized piece would be ideal but at the minimum 5" x 10"
(I think ... I may have a play with Elvis to get the correct size later on so hold fire until tomorrow on this one)

Clear as mud ???

To save you having to stitch and coordinate lots of piece of fabric, can we make our own labels if we have suitable machines?

Just let us know what wording you want and we could make the labels for our own quilts.
Title: Re: The Sewing Place's Project Linus Quilt Challenge
Post by: BrendaP on April 19, 2018, 09:39:47 AM
Does Elvis have to make the labels?

I would like to use the middle of a spare block for my label, can he manage with just 2" x 2"  or 1" x 4" ?  I can get it that small by hand.

Another thought about labels, you say leave a strip of binding unsewn.  Are you thinking of flap labels (like the one on my Secret Santa wall hanging)?  The Project Linus website says no embellishments such as buttons, beads or ribbons;  would they prefer the label stiched down all around?

Yes @BrendaP , @Iminei  I think they like any label securely stitched all round....that's what I was told by a co-ordinator down here ( irrelevant to me as I don't put labels on mine )

I've given the PL organiser for North Dorset a ring and will get back to you when I hear from her.

The reason I thought of making the labels were to give a uniformity to the quilts, as we are doing with the two colour plus background, as they  after all from members of one group, The Sewing Place.

Let me get back to you on this, I imagine she will call this evening. Thanks for raising the question.

Any labels are removed from donated quilts  as they are meant to be anonymous!

At the lace and craft fair yesterday I got a long quarter - just enough to cut five strips for a narrow border to bring the quilt top up to hte requred size, and I got a super bargain on the bring and buy table; 3m of 58" wide cotton fabrics (with a MyFabrics label attached) for £1.  The  quilt is colour A, colour B plus black.  The backing fabric is mostly As with a tiny bit of B on a cream/beige background, so I'm pleased with that.  0_0

But, when I got it all out this morning and looked at the top which is made of two sets of smallish blocks, each set with the colours in a different order, would you believe it I had several blocks in the wrong places.  :fish: :fish: :fish:  I've spent all morning unpicking and resewing.

Just finished the top of my quilt and planned out the quilting. Now for the layering. I wouldn’t normally use light binding on a children’s quilt as it might get grubby quite quickly, but we’ll see how it looks. I’m enjoying doing something a bit different from what I’d usually do. However I need to make quick progress as I’ve got another to do for little grandson’s new room and then I need to get started on one for the grandchild expected in summer. All good fun!

Almost finished. It was very showery here today so started the quilting and it just got addictive!  Don’t think it would win any competitions, but I hope a child will enjoy it. The binding is sewn on , but I’ll hand stitch it to the back tomorrow evening at my knitting group. I always prefer quilting to knitting!

how are we getting on with these quilts then ???

I know you've still got 2 1/2 months to get them done (and to me) so there's no hurry but I was just wondering.

We've got two people doing each of the four contrasting colourways so it will be very interesting to see how different peeps interpret their briefs.

I've seen pics of Brenda's two (yes, not one but two) quilts and I must say that the contrasting colours work extremely well and cant wait till Ive got them all together for a group photo!

Lowena we can do that in a quiet area of FOQ to get yours in shot before we donate them to the Ladies of Linus!

Do remember Girls, I will need pics of your quilts ... front, back, any detail you care to showcase  .... sometime towards the end of July for the Incognito vote!

It's a good job there are still two and half months to go as there has been a serious lack of progress here.

Test block has been made and fabric for all the blocks has been cut. The backing fabric was bought on a recent trip up the M6 and so there is just the sewing to do.

Hi Imi,

Sent the photos a while back, but have yet to post the quilt. We have had no WiFi for days and still no BT engineer, but have just discovered how to use phone to supply WiFi. ( BT say the will pay for extra data usage). Anyway, just to say I will wash the quilt and then post to you later this month. @Iminei  Thanks for letting me know, and thanks in advance for passing them on to Project Linus.

It's probably better for the quilts if they come out of their inner wrapping, but do whatever is most convenient for yourself, and then just hide them away in a dark corner until it's time to do something with them.

Tell your OH that is for the sick children;

that you don't really want to sew but you can let the lil orphans mites down !!

I have four wonderful quilts on the footstool in the front room and I'm sure  yours, @Lowena will be as good as any of them ... your cushion was beautiful ....

I must say the two colour thang was a stroke of genius (head swelling smilie), even if I do say so myself!
The results are stunning!

As soon as I get all the quilts together (or in the case of Low and anyone else who may be bringing theirs to FOQ personally) photos of all the quilts we will have the competition!

By the way, if you are bringing your PL quilt to FOQ yourself, we will hand them in together ok? I desperately want to get a pic of all the quilts together ... and I know just the place to do that!

Okay Mali, please refresh yourself of the the rules in Post One of this thread and choose two opposite colours on the colour wheel ....

Yes, yes I'm aware that the others had their colours allocated to them, but as we had eight takers, we have 2 quilts of each combo ...

Red/Green
Yellow/Purple
Blue/Orange ...etc

So this will be a random one.

Dirty and Sludgy ???? ... there is nothing Dirty and Sludgy about the colours in the quilt that arrived with the Postie this morning (beautifully packaged too by the way)

I'm assuming its yours Ploshie as there wasn't a card or any other evidence as to the maker apart from the postmark of Dyfed !

And its the first one (If I remember correctly, its a bit of a schlep all the way to the front room to check on the small Project Linus mountain at the moment) that used only TWO different fabrics in the top!!!!!

and it looks absolutely STUNNING ... Could you make me a double bed sized one please???

Sorry @Iminei  I meant to put a note in the box but had taped the lid on before I remembered and I was in a bit of a rush.
The fabric on the back looked dirty and slushy in the photo that I took when it isn't really.  Actually, I used 3 fabrics for the top - there are 2 different shades of one but not as different as I wanted.

I finished the quilt top this morning and pieced the backing this afternoon. Miracles of miracles, I actually had a big enough piece of batting in my batting stash, so I might even get it layered tomorrow.

@Ellabella @Pearl @Lowena @StitchinTime @maliw

Okay Ladies

It is now July and tempus is starting to fugit ..

Remember I need your finished Project Linus quilts OR 3 good pics to showcase them in my sweaty lil hands by the end of the month so we can have our competition.

IF you are taking the quilt to FOQ this year, take a pic of the front and back and any detail you want to highlight.
Each quilt will have 3 pics in all.

If I have all the entries in before then, we will run the competition early !

What Lowena said.

I think I'm going to have to bow out of the competition as I am unlikely to be able to finish by the end of July.  I hope to be able to have it finished by the FoQ.  I have been working 5 days a week and have been asked to stay on for an extra week.

I've almost finished the top, I was hoping to finish it today but was at DD's from 10.15am until 8.30pm so no sewing today. I am hoping to get it finished ASAP and will take it with me to FOQ, photos when it is finished. Thanks for the push Iminei.

I'm sandwiching mine tomorrow. I might not enter it for the competition though. It's nothing special design wise, and I'm not as pleased with the colour scheme as I hoped I'd be. Also, I'm backing it with fleece ( a Linus favourite ) so it won't look up to much to photograph. I will take it to FOQ though, or post it first to @Iminei  if it's too bulky to carry on the bus.

I entered to be part of a project and for my own pleasure / satisfaction, not to be judged  ;)  I haven't decided whether I'm posting the quilt to @Iminei or taking it with me ( depends how big a case I want to lug around  -< ) The top is finished but that's as far as I've got, so....we'll see. I have an urgent cushion to do ( today's task if I ever get off here  :| )  before I can complete quilty  :)

Right I'm putting a stop to this negativity.

We don't JUDGE Lowena;
we post pics in the Darkside because we are proud of our creations and want to show them off.

We are running this 'competition' to give a lil something back to you girls who are giving these beautiful quilts away to ill children, to get inspiration for ourselves, to try and inspire others and for the FUN of it!!!

You are as accomplished as any Darksider; your cushion cover was just beautiful, I would have been chuffed to bits to have received it and Im sure Ella loves it.

Im happy to transport your quilt Lowena as I have a ginormous suitcase to take up, and will probably be there on the Wednesday evening now, as Imself is working at the mo, so cant get me to Brum in the morning.

So to conclude, we do need pics of your quilt Lowena, join in and have fun with your friends!

For the photos, is it now just front, back and one detail that can be submitted?

The back of my quilt doesn't photograph very well from the distance required to get the full quilt in shot. Would it be OK just to have part of the backing in shot?

Absolutely, maybe a shot of the binding which shows the backing as well SIT,
or some corner porn that features the backing ?

I will be taking a group pic of all the quilts that make it here before the show as well; I'm really inspired that you girls have given up your time, effort, skill and fabric to make something to give away, even for a very good cause that is awe inspiring!

After FOQ we can get back to normal and host our next challenge.

I'm beginning to think she has several hats. She's just managed to take off the one that said she couldn't clean out her sewing machine, so she's clearly been looking in the cupboard for another one. (We still haven't got that finger-wagging icon, btw.)

I'm on your side here, @Lowena .  I'm unlikely to take part in the competition either, mainly because I won't have finished on time.  (Will be sewing the binding on on the train to NEC.)

Imi did suggest I could take pics to cleverly disguise the fact that it was unfinished but I haven't even thought about backing fabric.  Maybe I could use the fabric I bought at last year's FoQ for my mystery quilt that still isn't finished.

Do you think polyester thread would be okay for quilting?  I've only ever used cotton but have some poly that is the right colour.

TIA
Title: Re: The Sewing Place's Project Linus Quilt Challenge
Post by: BrendaP on July 28, 2018, 11:43:48 AM
Yes, it will be OK.  You can also quilt with rayons or metallics if you want to.

One of my Linus quilts (I did two) is quilted with regular Guetermann polyester SewAll.  Even though I used 100% cotton fabrics I think the wadding was 80% cotton and 20% polyester so a bit more poly in the mix doesn't matter.

TBH, the other quilt actually has a couple of patches which are poly-cotton.
Imi knows which quilts I made, and I bet she can't tell me which are the poly-cotton patches.

Superior threads do a few polyester threads suitable for quilting (e.g. Bottom Line, MicroQuilter), as do Wonderfil (Masterfil, Deco Bob, Invisifil). There seem to be various other polyester quilting threads available too, so I would give it a go. Perhaps try a small test piece first to check if the tension needs altering.

Do you think polyester thread would be okay for quilting?  I've only ever used cotton but have some poly that is the right colour.

TIA

Quite after the fact, I know, but on thread, here's my thought. Purists would insist on only cotton for everything. True purists would also insist it needs to be hand quilted. Quilt Police who are purists would tell us that using any of the invisible threads is heresy and "not quilting". Fact. Have heard them say it out loud at a show.

These same people forget about the fact that when many of us first got interested in quilting, back in the 70's, when everything was cut out with a template and scissors and most of the fabric available was poly-cotton most machine quilting was done with polyester thread.

I like cotton. I use cotton. My garments are usually cotton, linen or rayon and I sew with cotton. Usually. I also put up with fixing occasional popped seams and seams that start to disintegrate from age. PITA to fix sometimes.

These are kids quilts. Kids use their quilts and they get washed often. It is probably actually a really good idea to quilt a child's quilt with poly thread. I don't usually do kids quilts but will try to remember to use polyester thread.

I need as much time as possible since I'm very slow - life gets in the way (well, work does anyway) -<

This morning, I read this from the Project Linus website.

Festival of Quilts Challenge 2019

The majority of children love to have bright colours in their quilts. Our theme for 2019 is to make a quilt using ONLY red, blue and yellow. The size of the quilt should be 36″ – 42″square.

Would we be interested in joining in with this?

Sounds like the theme has been chosen for us!

Actually quite a challenge to use only the three colours and to get a good balance, though if you include the tints and tones (light and dark versions of the same colour) there could be some lovely combinations.
