Title: Cot Quilt from Start to Finish for the New and the Nervous
Post by: Iminei on July 03, 2017, 14:09:21 PM
Ladies and Germs,

I have been asked a couple of times now, if I would post a blow by blow tut on how to make a simple cot quilt for those Nervous Newbies timidly tiptoeing into The Dark Side for the very first time .....

So Here 'tis ........ Hopefully you will sewalong with me

Day 1...

I want to create a cot quilt about 36 x 45 inches large, which is a nicely manageable size on most everyone's machine.

I have some fabulous curtain fabric from Sanderson featuring a treasure map that I know looks great fussy cut;

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CRugTmCgiULoENmlC3AEXaipJ6iMwHU-RzGNsj-sYXARpKqZPEvSiOz0aSR50z3NwG7RdiW1bZLGV5ZcgH7dzqqR6zZjCTYNz-9umHoLdjUpDfYpnbTm8EZC90bKeoAa-ng7oBhTBRMnBCi_gSZLTui_Buu5bpgyQQ1zdNrMFmsUL7hKlgjUNX681nXM5cmjT6L0Vqt52v5Cdi1QgoTBLIn8DOEpAQT7ZfPR02scR0H95GO5Di47v_dN_RvT5LF1kVgSPrghnyyuHTYwUqLWlO5phuSuuvJXJYa3KBs3XaDNU3Q2rwulJUziMl6Hb6Dr8t8ZG6YugCQXskhEp0aCsmp4rrFL_QyIVebutT_rLgvh3uJZtJA-dzN5VzJxaZ2_2NqFhcfWwHu4M_wKo6OSDZuC9TSbTFhhdUAIcfTtzNRDc5YTKuBW-PNCpfVZGU-MOGhSjwHTzLZI1Nq2DbfrthSZS6vFAdTXromfAiUuyvQ1VrzGIVitKlapeg3Mdkme9xVNt7aFCKrjwk0LHNqRMWf-c_WvevS0AsipLrh4oTa2N-nKDU4wlIqVPbsABzgc719OUkwEQNp9TbIBKl4v3VsOs20whEpFNSZwN5rv9sAtJDMBUKHkwiYGaLgVd4dMqXypl7rmdmoEIB1TAmAc1ieyDVfqo0ctODBa=w1053-h789-no)

I picked this up as a remnant from my local Interior design shop, and am going to surround the feature squares with squares in coordinating and complimentary colours picked from the design.

Your Feature fabric could come from an old pair of curtains, a duvet, a shop remnant (like mine) or a specially chosen pictorial fabric. The complimentary fabrics were bought as FQ's so this needn't be an expensive make ...

Lets audition fabrics....

I'm looking for colours in the pictorial design...

A good tip is to look at the selvage of your Feature fabric. All the colours in that fabric will be marked as dots along the selvage enabling you to closely match your CF.....

The blue is quite grey in colour ...

There is no red in the print, its a coral colour, more a pinky red..

I'm trying also to use similar patterns in the coordinating fabric...

Small polka dots work well for this and wavy designs would look good as they would pick up the waves of the sea. I have some nice blue wavy design somewhere, you might see that appear later when we start cutting the squares.

Now to the Maths! (Brendaaaaa !!!)

From here on in I'm going to use FF for the fussy cut squares  and CF for the surrounding coordinating squares to (hopefully) avoid confusion.....

To get a good FF, looking at my fabric, I need a 6" (finished size) square .....

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/h97cE9ZD-VfJUjEt2-a-8gjm64nTVvoHT7uCH8hn96ji0LrwDqhkeOAD7rWRQsO8aW-C5GwkHd-mzqiaLQVqrGE8fa79o9COOewVjf8dv3SqLouf4Uf7COP3ZrBadXb49o-wxxH2Nchh6Xd3STixoyOveE0Y7q89JHDivb1O2hFVACQoynDrfDAsAawdam9eXPI_Uq9U6lCm_f4BUHg8VpkEQYzMfvd92YxwAWCZtsjm6xzVFmNpGgTbQ0So4jiovTTz83pyDHn5kdMhwtyOAesf8zLSAhlx_QsE-VikvGIK9brv1D5ST-9ZplYTqcRb8QeBMFAXMtpmFHrlYf-uu0HEfNDQ-1vCd_tx9QvOV5cdWiUzYS51gGfhrr3vLR69ToEDmkYZ1MAhH1m7xcSuDORFLOj3BVoZIevu-U7gTEF6fBVqiUP8s_LYeXO4wnAIFcyelu97fagfOdEiw9b4eFQdt2-Mmx-BUImtHLPCgNMrsJETAJrpgUdj6BCfLXjJM0SXuY3zqj2LN-gVi6NNtkrC-2W5Gsw0A8p8CCM81NugglbpL7VjugSnV-ngUGlxEDH8ECsOn5uewYyhW4SNHh7Mcd23zfDKsuTeoLRT4XhkEDZwjJMMcKhGfD3zCx87LALrebMcHKGSbQDFGN2w1QeE1kHUjA5o6Y7f=w1053-h789-no)

Your FF square may be smaller, depending on your design.

Lets look at the Rows (across the quilt) first.
We need to get to a measurement of 36".....

which divided by 6 (the size of my finished FF square) = 6 Rows,

which if we surrounded the FF's by CF of (whichever size, that multiplies into 6)  ...
2" (nah! too weeny) ... 3" or 6"

produces ....

CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, CF
CF, FF, CF, CF, FF, CF
CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, CF

would mean we would only have two FF across the width of the quilt .....

That could work out,  but what if we only had one set of CS between the FF ????

CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, CF
CF, FF, CF, FF, CF, FF
CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, CF

Then we could have 3 FF across but one of the FF would be on the edge of the quilt ... No good!

What about the outside CF being half sized, ie 3" wide by 6" deep ???

1/2CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, 1/2CF
1/2CF, FF, CF, FF, CF, FF, 1/2CF
1/2CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, 1/2CF

That could work...

Now lets look at the Columns (down the quilt)...
we are hoping to get a measurement of 45"

which divided by 6 = 42 (7 columns) or 48 (8 columns)
I think as this is a cot quilt .... less is more

So 6 rows by 7 columns .....

I think I will make the top and bottom squares half sized ie. 3" deep x 6" wide to tie up with the half sized sides as well,

Though this presents a problem with the placement of the FF squares....so maybe to leave the top and bottom rows as full sized squares ...

1/2CF, CF, CF, CF, CF. CF, 1/2CF
1/2CF, FF, CF, FF, CF, FF, 1/2CF
1/2CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, 1/2CF
1/2CF, FF, CF, FF, CF, FF, 1/2CF
1/2CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, CF, 1/2CF
1/2CF, FF, CF, FF, CF, FF, 1/2CF
1/2CF, CF, CF, CF, CF. CF, 1/2CF

This will end up (hopefully) as 36" x 42" ....

Now remember that we have been working out our design using finished sizes...
When we get to cutting, we will be adding 1/2" on each of those sizes to account for the seam allowances.

I hope you are with me on this so far guys!

So for those of you wanting to break your Patchwork & Quilting duck and follow along,
I need you to get together your Feature Fabric and your Coordinating Fabrics
and meet me back here when you are done......

Are you adding a border? As you will be losing more of the 1/2CF into the binding if not, which may look a tad off, unless you add an additional 1/2" to cope with the fabric covered by binding.

Possibly ... Thank you for thinking on your feet for me!

No worries ;) it's something I forget a lot when doing plans. All beautifully worked out block dimensions and then I go to work out the amount of binding I need and I remember I have forgotten to do the border! Also I love FMQing the borders ;) but you're not such a fan of FMQ ;) Maybe I should do a FMQ design block of the month to get you to join the Even Darker Side!

Day 2 ...

Yesterday I drew up my layout so know exactly how many 1/2 squares and full squares of both FF and CF I need.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fPtgnQkjqjIPe2bXgHUhy6yIfduZNKfymp3EFTvgwj3wIaGavFvAodXtLSsbC1XY1WidvsIOmLZ-bmho0F6HeT1Wwj2N4ZLO3qb0mxL18oA5tCxsDWCZ7V1PbfI2Gr1xXk73OaaTV8y0Eox8l6EGnlBt9GB2VPJOAZSKY96aAooKWk7c0ltQRMJxw-3vderGmT5sh1Sw2zuyITd6u4Y3VhwsLdKLM5dk9jQNhxnIedewMUBCS95PUNLwZKniXrx5KPJ7ZxCIQeHKDH7gDnAx10mo1xeApxuWnBpt6Sh-aYyPmoMScT9R6CvsBWW59V5G_cBTvBt5jZO3tD3YTVL3W5X_DAmVd1MXvvfQggbG_-MauAQJtJd_PPV-Qd3pTQUo9D7lNDqYU01L6gHlAQCcoS94p_Hf1pT9lDjnAsFofe5NO6Y-AFY_mzMRS5qsWdhidebVTKizT2nVwgHtTi4NLvOoxR9gVXrG44RPIiRwM_pYvdmOzTJHs-_MUeMezzevIifftW2sC1g6kTPkyj8Y2BqomztNLYg8G5LVJzKgsphzENk8uuBaWuw37ZOAnCjnczTw82d4b_wyY4m_7uKojJ_WB_M__mzf9NYvxEviTaqGpFKhoolthJiQNgYHuOjmQnSaRFUutEXlNYpw_MVstu-QMPRTWBfPxgNN=w510-h789-no)

Today I have been cutting my fabrics;

We are working with 6" finished squares so need to cut them at 6 1/2".

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ymTV55-kr8UhQzwLGvi4fJp1Q7JHQahVBGx0FCYc13dwA4JNnMb-K6X32ENIs2GZshG0TKsi2nBnTrs3CsbyiHN5zyEYUhiGusLu0On4tnm3vLiwCpRkkNoj_2GpJGQ2R_8IPoxS04Go4KtuirzPgndfQ2amtPv2yjlX2OicV3k1If8p1cO7aqSItAT2cmA6HLtCtIP9Ri2ST-rHZ3X09FXrbW_-N2A88g3fEhIUNLHyCk2_JQl10XgFWPksdhwMrPh2LCBa6h_yKi_eMwzVxxjmhU9akcRtU3UODShjLrJfuSAWKMuqxZ5asIdZrF1fTWowa39bksTjUsnTRXPND5EvAoB2G3FEEqN5aAwa3gvYsQmzSv4WylJzV4zqq0a1-RnHoqbEVHjz81nQ17ao9qcYIeUy78mQPEFHeN0VeR5rRPWqzjT-ZZkhtES43UADhfgOnKvJKP_MPQ0Uz1Y72UbCLzZ3molOM5ST_LGvyE3iuzyBWk2T-jWd0C9zA3OALRn_q6xn28AlaY9sjRuE7GTu1Z2xvfXi8RMjNpkuewg7vqWmA_i7kleZP_mQ-eMH31NZmw2-VDQE6m8geFNXz7DSmlSmdim2ap4LD528s8xULOF-YoatMcXArrVxe93mOVP5uChfFgwoSAqtT1bV3Ml2C500snUK8FBq=w1053-h789-no)

Cut a 6 1/2" wide strip from your FQ or WoF and cut into 6 1/2" squares...
Remember to cut a few 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" * half squares for the edges too.
If you are using a directional print, make sure you cut the 1/2 squares the way you want the print to run

* If you do not want to add an additional border to attach the binding too, as explained by Syrinx below, cut these side half squares 3 3/4" x 6 1/2" (if you are super accurate at piecing) or 4" x 6 1/2".

I have cut much more than I need for my layout, so I have plenty of options, and could If I wanted make a second quilt.

I have fussy cut the FF and have decided I want the arranged like this.....

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/MHK7O17OH4RPlHHHPyodE59WT8UgpISpt8QQZBpPdDOzTMw_36CYbfATga35-GDNwWRl6ZZm2lTCz3Qb2A2lKs3-2UrglEJmTLKWIuxvNYp4i3hEQxm4feozNidCuMeQmR-qlcUgNgkr1_tce4o5dfyXTkrV4A54yYDMHc9GtLU3T3y9HiZc49QVjeEmF0akCThmoD6HL_CHZzJjINoG-d7jPpWAZUWkxFgCTAlN48iGg3TSzflTGT6NaNNJSQWkAJNVXBN3_fSGgvE0pAiLDfufd4S7waTxTifIasLFSUOR6bHcfKWrpOQC6Q__8296aAHZ-mNlH5e54bxLPF4xJdsVB8MHN7toeFBuOKEcuXgd_vrUI_8Bb9vverzn7IKyuTlI2dmZ-7cwC2yomHqZo9H_Qu05RzdLfQ6fyLaNoga7vb-qYWtjBpXzocq1XQFsGy0qTn86ZqpRv0MsjFQrZvzkoIi77x5f1F3hivelZ4tMc7MANNkIkwacO9-olFbh5FPVDEGlvrq_eObQ1JjTiXw4jPFVecfl7PESmE0DlRwhEyPKiXI2jYxCRJV8_mAUkTM9Fcijor6SZ1K8SC0-RHmF_nrDYQy6XeT_sgFz9qMkiwtosfj8O51hlh0HkUChp_IOgW88bnCL43EUiuuDNmDdTA6HcX19hwup=w713-h789-no)

I like the ships pointing into the centre at the top and bottom sides and the compass in the middle of it all.

So now to arrange the CF around the FF .... This can only be done by trial and error;
Pick up on a colour in your FF, making sure no two colours are touching and there is a good mix of light and dark.

Take a pic of your design and study it.
Its a very good way to spot something you have missed when looking at the design straight on...

You can see I have had to overlap the squares to keep the layout on the table.

When I am happy with it, which I'm not yet..........I will stack the squares in order, with post it notes marking the rows.

I have it as my screen saver at the moment so I can look at it through the day and muse on it...

Alternatively print a colour (or B&W if you are worried about values) copy of it and stick it on the wall/fridge/laptop so you can pass by and look at it anew...you will soon see what works and what is wrong!

Good Luck!

Join me tomorrow for Day 3,
Chain piecing the squares and assembling the top IF I am happy with the layout of course!

Thanks for this, Imi. I am not a quilter and probably never will be, although I am in awe of the gorgeous works of art produced on the dark side. This does look like something I might try some time, perhaps to use up some large leftovers. I wouldn't have had a clue where to start and this step-by-step guide is great.

Day 3 (in the Big brother house...)

Today I decided on a layout.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_XBsVuXH-3qKEhTQoBo2sZHbyShjwfhG7VG4lNrKT4Yqc85bIQlK8ObEe-UuzO10LPQxeLRO5KnKeBjTef8ORZD2qemFxZoDozZN3IXep8mh5PK7pGCz8xrB9dMA2T8mT3ebdHA3gOvIKPrXLRjFLheTcsWOoz8-G-_ku2HjS6R91_R2zS1oUu7dWQB5qpB42GxIZge1jvN1k1bF2DTNlrGps-lY-LpgDkBUpo8p-nedQ2NtIm-f2Y1OEAROwBjYZjGPoOlLwMEBzqepCZhMjQhzrdk8unRPQceNCih5maph03fTcXJZDSBsSHsjaKmL8KzgbmRPCS12kz3snJdeUTXmdYH9Oi2XfPoRmnp7NetxYNfDwGMhOz_vBxI0UeZcbFgHalGDXUNZaMpD8s0CmwMwyyXeB-0WBSBEEvTKmcWnhTEAyBfBx3_VafnE-CsckUabUUGh5fY8WoOiZLG-y8t6QpAf6QOI9cVCqOCShllgy86NZI3N2i3gdOca9EoBFY6pOqchMHbBcQRbAFYpOgWwTJF1m4TmljG8RwPxJg2qCkIrvpL_gjFCHi1EJR46z5VKcGsHFZqGWG0WkyfH9V3tSEblb9dsXEAkuRhuA1Z2XfbO6223SFKGCScxHw2N5zFwiIZcFtxP6Z91_wYDoZqXBaAmgvzYr8QN=w1053-h789-no)

As most of you know I don't really do random so there is a method in the madness there somewhere.
I stacked them in rows, and used post it notes to keep those in order as i chain pieced the rows.

I decided to try and give myself a bit more wiggle room for the Syrinx conundrum (see below) and staggered the half sized side blocks an eighth of an inch in from the full sized blocks. I will see if it has worked when I come to attach the binding.

I pressed the seams of the sewn rows alternately in the hope that they will nest together as I need to match the squares neatly. This too allows me to practice the Perfect Points Everytime method to great effect on most of the seams ...

you will not be able to do this on all of them and then pins are your friends.

So at the end of Day 3, I have a quilt top finished, ready for layering ....

Or do I ???
I have just noticed, a couple of hours after finishing and a glass of wine down, that I have made a mistake   D'OH!!!

Aw keek. Right near the middle too!
Two minutes'll unpick it. You had it right in the first lay out but it's nice to know the experts have oopsies too. (says the dope who sat and unpicked 32 stupid little triangles that had got themselves sewn the wrong way round cos someone was doing it from memory...or lack of it)!   :[

Day 4 (cont.)

I hied me down to my local interior Design shop early doors and was rewarded by a couple of cot quilt sized remnants of the lining I was seeking; £2.00 for 2, the lil minx Annika is just goading me to make another isn't she ?!

By lunchtime the quilt was layered and as I like to let it rest, settle and set, I turned my hands to constructing and attaching a hanging sleeve for the last quilt that I have entered to the FoQ this year. That's all done and I now feel very pleased with myself.

Day 5 (and I've gone seriously off piste)

Time to quilt!

The first thing I did, after pressing yet again, were the diagonal, vertical and horizontal lines!
These stabilise the quilt and give me freedom to start where I will

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/yMYqXnUiuJzJm5HLbwPVFhXy5SieerBS499dLUR5dWwqcIWAm-k00dqsHd9UBtENzD3R6mBa7bDJLl4WkRQv0o4E3gE4nDlih15E1cjl7fSP-fvx8njOaKxBnFvGGv4C3P583JrkO2wPjvllIFqaMNUTfmFhvRjQpqM_0kw2bFBSvVnieRWiPktGCcwkmR_L4F3q6nwRTFGvmEPUk0bGj19sCBcXcrj25-IJqePbgNzEiYMDvW8Jst7MOFZF6FhRIKkdOZrmG2cqWQHthcGRVSxy5oxwbOPDoFKfZSysTsu0HSARZ1qLudbAU4Vl2SKOFZ7JENC1j-COlTxA-I-kNfhbKU9EcJgsAmnYNWjW4u5JuKEe7TUvuPp9Uy99yEEo9w1Rc75-kgzWPGwyVtL0Bx_88sittwTgNyt7ySln7JwGUR8ehn7D_k5SIkjDBev-kiXnnTI-DXBY0rOHg-sHbPO9mDySu1N_7VNLKmSkGL9uzuhYEa8ypmZsfC9N04hQri52xvDlWFHKpX8mKyVepaYtWaKRSJzHrAKye12WrLrRd9sH5RThwbF1pwbFgb8q18oFqXwvlHuW6TEM_JvX2FumBughlCLRP2fMxrYP3VS5BUXC0s2LP9K1ADbqS1z1BY5UwE5eTaqsn44ytojhXuV_cqfwhworU6z-9wV2=w1053-h789-no)

Which as it happened was echoing the design of the compass right in the middle of the quilt using my very favourite variegated thread, YLI (did you know for ages I thought it was called YOU then I got glasses!!) Colour: Great Barrier Reef.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/UdBBIdOnBBemDIMklov75zX1DjQLPA7AaOldIx9mJ9gUHFiCL4KxnbJOh_a1mm2hemI2Up1Ty1JVDOxlp3AsWRTe08nUkg1zYw-Bhg0WUFie2vXzGIb6VtToUOofcz94cB11kLokhCksmlOPT6EWurP6hN7m5XLluWusAS6sViB54cC6cNgdVESGoQQZQDksRI93Ghv4xg2eIXyNJtGXYahdTULtGQ9zXWwliypvZz70izew9iJFFU1p2hAwupdrqBMtpt4sM96euAFt7zWxf2ixaGpoXKLgFtZINUTxzVCa0wNpIrzwD1fLnHgLjgWjtS0bITi3XeIQnE-8vJ3p-RgdyDGFsnBAoObOdG8AZ95urrc0PiLkCU9ouGlgF-08PZgK_HW9yi6WwqQmNip0tVG56jlMdctjQ8tSLprZNZe70KxyKSecHNZMpfSH_P90kYpLK_dKGm-mDsIntNIFRCHO7jhjyMOf93e6mliBkKAdJLzj6YCxCs18w6W6oX4PQV0H1zwfhUVKZN0_-3k2fdX3BAe-zKM01LsT8k8zERRC9khTUQoGjW489TUIu2PEA6ogj5SRmpgHnzEzh9BLoKiHVqj1SK7dZC9HHWlvQ0cyWSPB0WdqEDsywjqN-pRX0NYgITFWvK5z_fKheKDFbzV19ZGcvpICJECPBUCR=w1053-h789-no)

and then, I'm very much afraid, I went seriously off piste!

The idea was simple quilting that would be quick and effective to do, we should be ready to bind tomorrow ...
but then I thought about that cute lil octapussy in the feature fabric and had a draw....

No, No, No   :o ... not FMQ (shudders at the very thought) WFQ ....

But for the purposes of the Tut I should have done some simple diagonal crosses through the blocks. Nice, simple and quick.

Now I need a top of the sea idea for that last corner of the quilt !?!?

Ideas...Can't be the boat as it would be too big relative to the size of the dolphin

Day 6 ... A day of Indecision (cont)

Yes I'm veering toward a seagull but need to get the right silhouette .... skimming the waves.
Do they catch fish from the sea, I suppose they must. They can't all follow fishing boats around. waiting for the rejects.

So a good line drawing of a seagull catching a fish from the surf ... not too much to ask? Surely??

Whale or even a whale's tail too big and so, I fear, is an albatross.

This has been immense fun and not as time consuming as I thought, if you don't count the hoo hahing about the design, tho' admittedly if I had stuck to the brief, we would be done by now!

Here's where we are at ...

Gorgeous quilt!

Please can I ask a silly question? Do you quilt from the plain side, and is your bobbin thread the same as the top thread?  Two silly question! :|  Sorry  8)

Day 7 ..... Early riser

Please can I ask a silly question? Do you quilt from the plain side, and is your bobbin thread the same as the top thread?

Two questions (no Q's are silly) Several answers.....

When I echoed(ish) the form of the compass, I worked from the front marking halfway (3") along each of the squares, stitching to the corners and then to the next midpoint. I had the variegated in the top spool, I wanted the design to show on the  top and as I was stitching on the front, knew I was only hitting the Coordinating fabric, and cream thread in the bobbin.

When I quilted the Octapussy, Dolphin, Angelfish (in that order) I made templates, decided where I wanted them on the front, flipped the quilt over, placed the templates and started to stitch ..... so working on the back.
I had the variegated as the top thread and cream thread in the bobbin, as I didn't want lines of variegated over the feature squares on the front.

By the time I stitched the Starfish I just drew points along the outline of where I wanted it to be, sort of laying on the sea bed and joined the dots as I stitched again with variegated thread in the top and cream in the bobbin.

When it came to the waves, I stitched the first line on the front, stitching between two measured marks on either side of the quilt as I wanted to keep the line of the waves straight; I then flipped the quilt over and stitched the rest of the waves from the back of the quilt, feeding them under the sea-life when and where required by stopping the stitching and tying off the threads to be buried later. I used cream thread both sides.

I think I'm going to quilt sun-rays at the top. There is only about 6" of height to fill so a bit limiting.

Right I'm back from the coal face and the sky has been filled with rays of sunshine in Yellow variegated, Silvery Gold and bright Gold metallic!

Hard  to see in a pic, but you can zooooooom in in my Picassa album to catch the glint of gold

https://goo.gl/photos/TuYqVjsiQck2HQH88 (https://goo.gl/photos/TuYqVjsiQck2HQH88)

The quilt has been trimmed and has come out at 36 1/2" x 41 3/4" and I have 3 and 3/8 width of the half side blocks ...
Excellent.

As I cut through all my anchored quilt threads, the first thing I have done is stitch about a 1/4" line of stitching right the way around the perimeter to hold those stitches in place.

A dark blue to make the FF squares stand out more?
Oh dear, I've just realised I'm reading about quilterisering, NO, I won't be doing any myself!  Whilst I admire the ones other people make, there is no room in my house for them - I actually like plainer colours.  All those different colours would really mess with my OCD, I'd have had to just use blues for the CF squares, and they'd have to symmetrical!  And possibly a dark red for the border then, although that's probably one colour too many for me!
Anyway, ignore me, this is a great tutorial from a great quilterist  :)

Just had a look at the photos, the quilt is lovely. I would probably go for blue for the binding but that is my favourite colour. I think you could pick out any of the colours from the quilt and go for a dark version. Have you got any fabrics in mind? Lay them at the sides and see which looks the best.

Thank you for explaining how it was quilted, you must have amazing concentration and patience  :) I always thought quilting had to be a continuous thread, but I love that you can quilt with standalone lovelies like your dolphin and octopus  :)

I think a dark blue binding would be nice - the colour of the sea  :flower:

Could this follow-along be pinned so it doesn't get lost in the Dark Side?  Would love to try this later in the year  8)

Thx SG, It wasn't meant to be quilted like this at all...
I was thinking of simple (and highly effective) crossed through squares but came all over artistic.

and its really easy to do ...template , s l o o o w speed and your'e there!

Try a simple shape ... a letter, number, fish shape, heart, horse ...anything ..... make a template, pin and sew....

Imi, do you remember my machine and its penchant for sewing quickly even on the slowest setting? I tried with a template and it isn't very accurate on curves as it won't slow down  :( Could I spray baste and pin the template and sew by hand do you think, or would it look less effective?

Why pin the template? Make it from card and just draw round it. Why wouldn't it look okay done by hand? Are you sure you haven't got a hat?  ;)

Defo don't SB, Low

... but of course you can quilt by hand; just pin the template down or draw round it with whichever removable pen/chalk/pencil you like and stitch ... would look excellent me thinks.

I'm surprised your super duper machine doesn't have a speed limiter ...seems a very good idea and one of the reasons I so love the Janomes ... even the cheaper machines have them.

Another option is to use some/ all of your fabrics in the binding.

If you cut random lengths and join them with a 45° seam , this minimises bulk and allows your eyes to merge the fabrics as you see the quilt. I've used this method successfully both when I couldn't decide which binding to do and when I've been short of fabric due to miscalculation/over optimism. My home page shows some of the results, esp the 'fishy quilt' when I'd forgotten about the fabric needed for binding completely :|

It has got a speed limiter Imi, if you remember we tried it when you were showing me machine applique....you said it still went too fast even on the lowest setting  :D
P.S. very bottom choice for binding, although personally I always like to use plain black or navy  :)

The final fabric! It was a no-brainer!

Now the next bit might be a bit 'wordy' but bear with me, and there are far more pictures in the album ...

So onward to ....

BINDING

CUTTING

As we already know,

The Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything  is 42 .... .... and this is true for binding too!!!

This is the number we use to determine how many WOF strips you must cut and join to make the binding for your quilt.

My quilt measures about 36 1/2" x 42 1/4", rounded up and totalled this comes to 160", which is the circumference of the quilt.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NltiRz1b1q010QGWjrCi_3byQZT8FNj0Vyamm6qhkmILCMzPhjgHd0ZGffMtJfBwfvT5WxqLY9NRaT2-MBR356CIksJMlhOAitqZ5QxIYsPqXthhCDzicgxLT9dGMqCTG_J-CsfoitHrsf71Tci811VhU6oGcQPfKIOIzpFRAFjcLRVTDW6BOUpccaWnfY5Vbiexe6q8pnnzwYEoU-9fP7ffqEl3ko3yi-gdB20ZY2P08ws9RtWyydrYC5jXN1YFTqv4IyK7sCWF8MwRCly0w1Sof0GV_xsDm9WBmwTbn-COoCo6Upj8DpG2fyr4ZNdXiXPHyG8sBFy-49qWwNytWOSIqy3Zd_wUS3u3bfYPeRz47FJK-2SST1R9J69_x5bMdzv5Y-TQ86LjLP21PuKE_NALy4uU8qIzSpq1MnP7JUqtx3b5t5QctHv_ASe4W-1HHSjfuQbFyUCM4DxDC80co3QuALXbXxlT1ojuyNB4Homd5br5Rasv-Ci9EbiR-j5JHDem-2qqU1oEFwlBhp2ZK4nBaMuxJNn1FCvcpy_a-V6OBvUeVWl0Q5USHOgfui_JtnWGzh6Bqw52b01sqJwNXSvTp4TzuzY-Fh1keE05n2lwagcgT5eys2mRSPxSPJvXhJYIJ_3U-9XujzGhCKtXbvQGSr0tFgR59xDYK1d1=w375-h281-no)

Divide 160 by 42 and you get a figure of 3.89.

This is then rounded up to 4, giving us the number of 2 1/2" wide strips we need to cut from full WOF .

(If you are using FQ's ... As I have done myself ... you need to double this number and add an extra one or two strips to take the joins into account.)

JOINING

Having cut my four 2 1/2" strips I place two of the strips, right sides together at right angles to each other and draw a 45 degree angled line from edge to edge across the diagonals as shown .....

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lYW_MUZ5rgxKQy0p7v9oWNBgFuy3diFcbdTeqIxzrtXAMQHX_rwr4oIVj2eFaZb51fZ2ftGFnSTIw5AHwWEeDyeqYCzglid3_Hd5Ye--5lqrWYmP5Cj90b9sbnKDr-io2SIAf3176XczzAvHvHa_Q_fsN-NKI7ZXDY1Ick7-5BmJbWJqEWJLOWJQQzdF0EREGWyYLRWBwweOiKrLvoBvWj_RLgpmvZVz3RSgs8-EWVtIS8pC5BhTDeW-cM18aCSNHNb1fpfsTGUt1BbVu-gYTuZ-AdVEarlrafF4lNKTaKLVnrkCS_HHvQNQoG0vRmuSul-gZSZzm6voxyLI0s9dygRlZBcJ8D8xTVTd8ihwWpEZpLzHmtjS6lcn6dywJwHecwBNLnKy5ZrsF1N1iMvig8FENctP1kgGCBpVfgMg7ZUz0ZLlGqXACHP7DZz0-OK5U-h7p3O1kb4nyKL8z30rdf-zG_Oj-ryEsTeh-RHnJ2pr6NWuCylIAAP8a2zbftRJy83nIxKSSl58lDwBYqpiIEDe3abvarRDEL7RjCf_lEd-Kkbc3ozxk9HD-i9jcNczDFZ-oN0BibViJaoHeATwKg_PStlMD-g0rRUPWm3VZtzslJfzrABYgDvrDJGMcVl8XBsnd6egn88YyPwvYGpeFDS48UI7tMdQJaGZvA2X=w1053-h789-no)

I pin, then flip the topmost strip to the right side and, continuing along the strip of fabric, place the next 2 1/2" strip right sides together at right angles and draw a 45 degree angled line from edge to edge across the diagonal. Continue to do this for all your strips.

Sew along the diagonal lines to join the strips. You can chain piece these together.
When done, Check the strips line up continuously before you trim them down to 1/4" from the sewn line.

Now take the whole long strip of 2 1/2" wide binding to the ironing board; press the joining seams to one side before you start to fold the strip in half (along its length) and press flat. Your binding will now measure 1 1/4" wide.

STARTING TO SEW

With the front of the quilt facing you ascertain where you want to start sewing.

I usually choose the middle of one side. Marking this with a pin I place a tape measure along the edge with the 6" mark  at the middle point.

I then mark the beginning of the tape measure with a pin and the 12" mark with another pin.
I will START and STOP sewing at these two points......

I then place my newly pressed binding, raw edges of both binding and quilt together, along the side of the quilt, making sure I have at least 10" of binding before my starting point. This tail is pinned up out of the way before I start to sew.

And Off I go, using a 1/4" seam with a WF or 1/4" foot (your choice)

MITRING THE CORNERS

As I approach the corner, I slow and 1/4" from the edge, turn the quilt by 45 degrees and sew 3 or 4 stitches to the corner of the quilt, back-stitching three or four stitches after that, I then cut my threads.

I take the quilt out from the machine and pull the un-sewn binding vertically up from the quilt......

I then fold the binding back down over itself, following the edge of the quilt and inserting the needle 1/4" from the top edge to stitch a few stitches before back-stitching to secure and then continue stitching......

This should give you a nice sharp mitred corner.

Continue to stitch all the way round the quilt, mitring the corners until you come to your STOP  pin. Back-stitch a few
stitches and cut your threads.

There are many ways of finishing your binding, this is only one of them and uses the Binding Tool ....

Placing the binding tool's right angled edge snugly up against the stitching where you stopped sewing, pull the binding over the tool and along the edge of the quilt and mark the line on your fabric ....use chalk or another erasable option here.

Do the same on the other side of the gap between stitching placing the binding tool's right angled edge against the end of the stitching ... to do this it will need to be placed upside down . Mark as before.

Open up the binding and lying the tool as best you can upon it (with the binding tools nose facing towards the middle of the un-sewn gap) line up your marked line with the marked line on the tool and using your RC, cut.

Repeat with the other side,  placing the nose of the binding tool on the mark instead of the mark on the tool.... I always mark the line of this cut and make sure the two edges have a ¼” or more overlap before I cut this one !!! (Please ask me why??!!)

You should now have the two ends of the binding cut at a 45% angle with 1/4" overlap ...

Follow the fold in the rest of the binding and press in half, lay against the edge of the quilt and finish sewing the binding to the edge of the quilt!

Phew!

I now take the quilt to the ironing board (if its small enough, as in this case) or the iron to the table Im working at (in the case of a larger quilt) and press the binding, including the corners,  back on themselves.

Lastly, pin the binding to the back of the quilt, all the way around and relax!
Leave the quilt somewhere to get for the binding to get used to its new position and pour yourselves a well earned drink!

As I aim to make children's quilts bombproof I now machine sew the binding down using a Blanket stitch .....Mirror imaged (thank you to whomever suggested that when I was struggling to work out how to BS my first machine bound quilt ).... on my machine. Stitch length 4, stitch width 2.5

But I have also hand-sewn many bindings down, finding the experience a pleasant way to wind down and finish the process of creating a quilt ....its your choice!

And now, if you have followed along, you have your very own Cot Quilt from start to finish!

I haven't yet labelled the quilt as it was purely an exercise so that would have added an hour or so on and a hanging sleeve would add a couple more  but after 7 days we have a cot quilt from start to finish! Not long intensive days either... maybe one day I will actually time the amount of hours I spend making a quilt ... it would be interesting to know.

Hope you enjoyed the tut, and there are many more pics and destructions here in my picassa.....

Oh my - I have dipped into the dark side...viewing only - I would be too nervous and too, too terrified to even start but just here to say I admire your patience and your wonderful skill in choosing the fabrics.  It is a beautiful quilt.  No, I won't be starting this....I don't think I could even sew strips from a jelly roll straight enough for a quilt.
Well done.

Do you then wash the quilt before giving it away as a present? How would you recommend machine washing and drying it?

Thanks for the tutorial. Very cute.

Personally I dont but I know many do.

I would wash it on its own on a delicates cycle, warm, no more than 40, (I would suggest 30, after all its not dirty is it?) and hang to dry over a radiator or on the line.

Make sure there is enough quilting in it tho' especially if you are a new quilter or you will be in Deep Dark Do Do territory as I was when I threw The (s)Crappy Bargello into the wash (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,2217.0.html) after the Mei was sick on it!!!

Just to explain the above paragraph ... The s(C)rappy Bargello was always very very sparsely quilted as it was one of my very first quilts ... it came out of the wash looking extremely sorry for itself  and it was obvious something had to be done!

If you are thinking of following the quilt design in the tut, a simple cross through each square will be enough quilting to hold it, if you want to echo the edge of the square too even better.

Do let us know how you are getting on if you are going to take the plunge, we love pics and are always here for any questions!

I always wash at 40 and tumble dry and iron before gifting quilts.

I do usually wash quilts once they are finished.  I don't bother pre-washing the fabrics, but I do sometimes wash the wadding as that is much more likely to shrink.

The wadding in my Project Linus quilt wasn't pre-washed (at least I don't think it was).  I've just finished that quilt and bunged it into the washing machine.  Just as well that it's got a lot of quilting as it did shrink quite a lot.  The texture has changed with the washing; the surface is now really very 'bubbly' which I rather like.  I agree with @Iminei that if the quilting is sparse it can look rather sorry for itself after washing.

This is all brilliant information. I didn't realise that wadding would shrink a lot. Must make a note.
I did learn the hard way veh veh recently that quilted things go bumpy if you wet them. I thought I'd give my cushion cover a quick spray to get rid of the basting pin holes!  >< The holes disappeared but up it bumped. I do quite like it. I hope my cushionee does too.
Next up is probably going to be my Project Linus quilt so this is all very helpful for loonies learners.  0_0

Well thanks all for the variety of opinion. Still uncertain.
It seems useless to give a baby quilt to a new mum if it won't wash doesn't it? Cruel to give it to them and for them to think they've ruined it....

Next question is have I done enough quilting? Its 5" squares stitched in the ditch with serpentine lines running the whole length of the quilt - they are approx 1.5" apart- 3 per width of square. The Hobbs poly/cotton batting says quilting up to 3.5" apart. A bit more advice please.
Title: Re: Cot Quilt from Start to Finish for the New and the Nervous

No No No ... all the quilts I have given have since been washed by their recipients many times and none of mine have ever been sent back or have been mentioned to me that the washing has ruined them.

Just make sure you have enough quilting on them, to hold the layers together ... was I using 6" finished squares??
A simple diagonal cross in each of those will hold everything together nicely!

Obvs you dont boilwash or put them on ultrawashes ... 30 or 40 delicate will do just fine.

Your serpentine quilting lines sounds more than enough (good choice too) ... you didnt press open the seams tho' did you ?

No, not a single seam pressed open. Stitched at 1.5 for piecing and in the ditch. The serpentine had a Pfaff mind of its own and I elongated it to have a more gentle curve. Just got to the binding stage so I'll attempt to take a picture when its finished. Thanks again. :)

FF = Feature Fabric ... the pictorial squares
CF = Coordinating Fabric ... the coloured squares

Are you following the Tutorial (https://goo.gl/photos/TuYqVjsiQck2HQH88)? or just this thread?

Remember to bring each pic up to full screen, you can then click on the i icon to bring up instructions to the side.

Apologies for any confusion ... any other questions please ask

Oh Puhlease!

Just think ... which would be more appreciated/awesome ???

A bought blanket or a handmade cot quilt ?????????

I'd make it for you ... but you wouldn't be able to afford it ....

Of course i would make it myself!

In fact, the left half of the quilt top is done. Hopefully before the week´s end the top will be finished-
The back is waiting in my closet and i hope that i have the batting in my stash.

And yes, i will be taking pictures - for a number of things i would like to share!  ;)
