Title: Tried and tested top
Post by: sewingj on January 16, 2020, 10:07:49 AM
I`ve got quite a few projects that I "should" be doing this winter but they are all quite challenging and I`ve got enough stress in my life at the moment without adding to it.  I did want to do some sewing though so I decided to make this top which started off as
https://www.sewessential.co.uk/misses-tops-mccalls-pattern-6964?gclid=CjwKCAiAsIDxBRAsEiwAV76N8zXA9vt1gT8aCtKFlrgrX9vNl3sDMCUxSW41q3_H9m9mNEEuM5FKRBoCHFIQAvD_BwE

I have altered it though to accommodate my fat tummy, small bust and dropped right shoulder.  I`ve also made the round neck lower (and previously have made the v-neck higher). I also used a neck facing rather than a neck band.   All of these alterations are things I would never have attempted until a few years ago (following advice from TSPers or gleaned from the internet) so I always feel quite pleased with myself when they work out!  The fabric is a cotton jersey which is my preferred option for sewing and wearing

Well done sewingj that looks like a lovely top and certainly my colours.  Also love your coat hanger, noticed that there is something on the hanger presumably to stop the garment from slipping off?

@Elnnina   they are extra thick adjustable hangers really designed for use when hanging clothes for drying.  I got them from Scotts of Stow but I don`t think they sell them anymore

Nice job.  Love the fabric.  So many prints I find are very large and no good to me at a mere 5 ft tall.

@Elnnina   John Lewis have have shaped non-slip hangers and cost £9.50 for a set of three.

New to me fabric shop but I get so frustrated when so many fabrics on the site show as sold out.

Me too.  I'm also bemused by some of the things depicted on jersey prints.  Last year cacti seemed to be common - why cacti?

Loubodu is my nearest bricks and mortar shop. It's pretty much a one woman operation run by a lovely young mum. She's just had a sale which might be why so many items are showing as out of stock. I think some of her fabric is influenced by her own likes (suitable for youngsters!) But I can usually find something I like and the quality is excellent

I see the shop prices by the half-meter.

@UttaRetch   I like that as it means I can buy less than a full metre; and if you click on each fabric it does explain clearly what the price per metre is, and tells you what you need to put in the Quantity box to get what you want.

I've said this before, price by the metre and tell customers the smallest incriment they can buy.  To my eye, some sort of subtle deception is being practised on the public with this half metre pricing.

Guthrie and Ghanis website lets you buy in 10cm increments and also prices by the metre. I understand it's more costly to have that capability, but I really appreciate it and it makes me want to buy from there over somewhere that only sells by the metre or half metre. I wish more businesses did that, especially because in this day and age we can't really afford being 'forced' into buying more fabric than we need and creating waste.

I think somebody - possibly Francesca - explained that the software to enable people to buy in 10 cm units is much more expensive.

I do like that: style, fabric and finish.

I have made a couple of 'tried and tested' tunic tops for myself over the new year. I have a couple of simple patterns I keep going back to to make again and again. I usually make some sort of alteration, be it length of sleeve, total length, add a pocket or two, different type of material for different 'hang', different trim..
