Well after all the chat about Foundation Paper Piecing i thought well why not, i like puzzles and it may be right up my street. I've bought this cushion pattern and it's made up of 109 pieces, today my tones of white fat quarters got delivered along with some A4 tracing paper that i can put in my printer to print the pattern pieces on and a add a quarter piecing ruler to help with accuracy when folding the paper. Just need to sort out some fabric tomorrow and i'm all ready to start.
-
Good luck, @Diane .
I <3 FPP and hope you do too.
-
@Pearl I've been watching a lot of tutorials on Youtube and i really like the way it is done, always up for a challenge so it should keep me busy for a while.
-
I've done some FPP and find it quite rewarding - once I get my head round what I'm doing that is!! I have to read the instructions every time as it doesn't come naturally to me. :D
-
I’m hoping I fall in love with this technique as I’ve come across this and absolutely love all the vibrant colours
-
That looks quite complicated but will be gorgeous when it's done :)
-

Wow I love the zebra! I would like to think I could make that but time will tell. :)
-
You need to summon up the Spirit of @the Queen of FPP
-
@Diane that looks fun. I’ve only done a couple of FFP’s which I enjoyed but they were much smaller, have fun and keep us up to date.
-
Oh now don't they look like lovely, lovely ones to do! Balloon and zebra....loooooove them both! :thumb:
-
Well i've printed all of the pattern pieces out on the A4 Vellum paper and that's worked a treat :thumb: I'll cut them out as i need them as it seems a more organised way of doing it and i don't want to get in a pickle with it. When i get to do the sewing i'm going to set my stitch length to 1.5mm so it makes it easier to pull the paper away. The paper will stay on until it has all been completely pieced together.
-

I came across the zebra cushion after i had bought the balloon pattern so it will get added to my project list.
-
They look fabulous and a really great way to keep the brain engaged as well as the hands, not too sure I have the patients for something that detailed.
I don’t have good colour sense when it comes to fabrics, I am fine with wool but fabrics seem to defeat me.
Although you have made me think about a kit I think I might have lurking in a cupboard somewhere
-
This is tricky getting your head round which way the fabric should be, got the first one wrong so I’ve redone it, one down and 108 to go.
109/108
-
That looks like fun!
-
@Diane I just read somewhere that if you dampen the paper, it makes it easier to tear away.
-
@Diane .. I used cheap childrens tracing paper (99p for an A4 pack of 10 sheets?) which printed fine and as you sew to the reverse of the paper there was no chance of transfer of ink
-
@toileandtrouble Thanks for that, i'll see what it's like when i get to the stage.
Well the first two pieces i bu**ered up  so i redone those. After doing a few bits i now get the gist of it. The only thing that i'm finding difficult is making the right colour choices, I'm not sure it goes what i've done but i've started it now so i'll just carry on, i'll do this as a practice piece. I've managed to do 10 pieces this afternoon so quite happy with that.
@Iminei Thanks i'll get some of that, wasn't sure if it would print very well so bought the vellum paper.
-
@Diane Patterntrace sells A4 FPP paper at £11.90 for 100 sheets which might be another option if you can't find cheap tracing paper.
https://www.patterntrace.com/product/foundation-paper/
-
@StitchinTime Thanks for that, i've bookmarked it :thumb:
-
@Diane I use very cheap thin A4 note pads that I buy from the local office superstore...I think they're about 55gm instead of the usual 80gm wt of ordinary paper. Ridiculously cheap. The only thing I have to do is feed it one sheet at a time through my printer rather than putting a heap in the printer tray...that makes my printer very unwell and constipated!
If you can, buy yourself a cheap lightbox...it's been a life saver for me with my current project and saved me so much unpicking through wrong placement. :)
-

I have a lightbox, i'll dig this out in the morning and try that, thanks @rubywishes

I really like the look of this but am so confused about how you do it there seems to be sooo many different ways on YouTube that I got lost

@Celia that's why some of us say any type of paper piecing must be the work of the Devil. You either love it or not.
-

@Celia i know it looks complicated but in actual fact it’s not. I looked at a few videos and then just used one of them to refer to when I started doing it. How about printing off a free pattern, something small and just have a practice with it. I messed up my first two attempts but now I know what I’m doing and it’s really quite simple.
-
Or how about using one of TSP FPP tutorials (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/board,75.0.html)??????
-
I am a bit tempted by this one, https://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/assets/images/sewalongs/FollowTheBlueBird/PaperPiecedBird.pdf
I have had a look at the valentines heart @Iminei and that looks great but I can’t get it to print either from your file or the Pinterest link. I am however learning from your tuts so thank you
-
What @Renegade Sewist said :thumb:
-
Good progress this morning, i now have 49 pieces pieced together, i now need to dig out anther set of colours, just hoping i have a few different types in my stash.
-
This afternoon i have finished piecing the balloon parts, i have now have a pile of jigsaw like bits that i now have to put together :faints: I think this is a job for Monday when DH is at work and i don't have any interruptions, i had to redo three sections earlier due to chit chat about his bitcoins that have dropped in price  and then he asked me if i'd like to invest some money ....not on your nelly
-
Gorgeous fabrics @Diane ... How are you getting on with the technique????
-
@Iminei After piecing a few together i'm finding it very easy, it's nowhere near as complicated as i first thought. I'm not sure all the fabrics go together, they wouldn't have been my first choice but i was just going with what i have at hand, it will probably look better once i've pieced them together a bit more.
-
Getting there slow but sure
-
Well i've had a busy afternoon, mostly sewing and some unpicking , Managed to piece rows 1-10 together, spent ages redoing one part where one piece was incredibly narrow, couldn't leave it as it would annoy me. So now i have the balloon part sewn together, tomorrow i will do the two rows that form the basket.
-
Wow! (Ill add the ZER when I see the finished piece)
-
Wow!Wow!Wow! That is just gorgeous! Well done @Diane :perfect10:
-
Beautiful!
-
That is lovely @Diane
-
They look amazing, well done
-
@Diane :perfect10:
Wow! I think this 10s emoji was made for your cushion!
It looks fantastic.
-
Thankyou all, i was hoping to get the last two rows completed today but i've got side tracked, will do it tomorrow as the light is going abit now.
-
I've finished the row 11 so that's all pressed, one more row left to do which contains the basket. I've looked through my stash and unbelievably found nothing suitable :faints:, i'm not going to ruin it by just using anything so i've ordered these fat quarters which will arrive tomorrow, i think they'll make a lovely basket.
-
I think while i'm waiting i'll look to see what type of back i'm going to do. Might do an envelope back rather than a zip closure  Once the basket bit is complete i'll sandwich the front and quilt it.
-
They will make a good basket, it is looking very nice, have you enjoyed making it.
-
have you enjoyed making it.
I really have, it's nowhere near as hard as i though and it's one of those crafts that you can just get lost in, i forget about my worries and my anxiety disappears, so all good. I'm on the lookout for my next FPP project, i have something in mind.
-
Made a small bit of progress this afternoon, a bit of sewing followed by a bit of unpicking  Anyway the basket is now in place so tomorrow, after i've done the housework, i will stitch some ropes to connect the basket to the balloon (will practice this on scrap fabric first) then add the batting and back it and maybe get to do some quilting, then all that leaves is the piping and back to do.
-
Ropes now added
-
Looking good :perfect10:
-
That is really lovely @Diane - and amazing for a first project using the method. I watched an FPP demo on Sewing Street this morning and it did look like a very satisfying thing to do...
-
@Acorn Thankyou, it is very satisfying, looking back it was probably a bit ambitious doing something this big to start with but i got there in the end, i've really enjoyed it and have learnt a few things along the way that i would do better next time. I would love to do a wall hanging using this method maybe depicting a landscape or something similar.
-
Who on here found A winter scene project/kit ????
Come on own up .. the designer had loads of landscape kits using Freezer paper piecing or Foundation Paper Piecing ???

I am so sorry @Diane it is supposed to read,’ I decided it was too difficult and it’s back in the box, she says with dunces cap on.”
Not too sure where my spell checker or whatever picked up your name and decided to play with it, serves me right for not reading before posting
I must say it gave me a good laugh when I saw this though which I needed this afternoon.
-
@Celia   i did laugh myself, i knew exactly what you meant.
-
Why not applique the scene ??
You have the fabrics; It would be easy to trace out the elements, adding a 'seam' allowance where needed to overlap ... a lil heat'n'bond and a blanket, zigzag or straight stitch and you'd be on your way.
If I can take This (https://photos.app.goo.gl/N1MADicqPqpU8eL69)and make This (https://photos.app.goo.gl/iLnVPEXQWDsoysA2A) you can do that.
Its wonderfully absorbing.

Have you lot been :hic:
Well if they have they b%%%&* well didn't invite me!!!!.... sulks off in search of the gin ... or the very dangerous cans of beer....that I'm sure @Iminei has hidden somewhere in the darkside.....
-
@Lemon Syllabub ... They're 8 pack bottles in plastic and cardboard wrap with metal caps that need an old fashioned bottle opener .... hahahaha

@Lemon Syllabub Hey, don't forget to check your Swiss Army knife.

I know it's been a while but i've finally finished my cushion  The piping that i had ordered off etsy arrived yesterday and it looked like it had been steam rollered :S, said to myself after all the effort and work that's gone into this cushion, i wasn't using it. This morning i dug out some piping cord, found a long strip of purple binding and made my own flanged piping.....easy peasy  should have done it earlier. I done an envelope back out of some vibrant batik and hey presto.....here it is, I will add two buttons on the back flap, need to order some first.
-
It is lovely Diane, so colourful, well done.
-
Thankyou @Silver Rose I enjoyed making it and it's lovely looking across at the chair and seeing a colourful cushion instead of a plain green one.
-
Wow @Diane that is stunning :perfect10:
BB
-
Thankyou @Bumblebuncher :embarrassed:
-
:scream: :faints: :perfect10:
-
Cheers @Bill
-
I've really enjoyed doing the FPP and i'm already thinking of my next project. What i was thinking was another lap quilt or maybe a wall hanging, made up of twelve blocks. Each month making a block based on what i see in my garden, it could be a robin, bluetit, squirrel, goldfinch, bee or a flower etc
-
Your cushion looks brilliant and I love your idea for next year, I am sure you would enjoy doing that
-
Glorious @Diane just Glorious
just a question regarding the envelope back, you have already sewn the buttonholes then ????
-

@Iminei I haven't yet, does it even need buttons?
-
@Diane Wow! :perfect10:
I love your cushion.
Your idea for next year sounds brilliant. Really looking forward to seeing it.
-
That is so colourful and I love it!! :loveit:
Your idea for next year sounds great - although I know if it was me I might do the first and perhaps start the second but then...... Oooh look shiny.
-
Thankyou @realale I'm just seeing what patterns are available for what i see in my garden, Mmmm a bit trickier than i thought trying to source them. If i don't do the block a month then i'll find another FPP to do
-
@Diane that is truly beautiful, love it!
-
I will add two buttons on the back flap, need to order some first.
@Diane .... Did you not type that then ????
I dont suppose you would post a tutorial on how to make ... and attach ... your own piping, would you ??
-
@Iminei i haven’t added buttons yet, just thought it might need some to secure the flap but I don’t think it does so I’m not going to bother.
I had no idea how to make/add the piping and I followed this tutorial off YouTube

@Diane I have a copy of this book (https://www.abebooks.co.uk/9781571205377/Feathered-Friends-Paper-pieced-Blocks-Bird-1571205373/plp)
I don't know why or how i ended up with it but you are very welcome to have it, I dont want anything for it, I can't honestly see me ever using it. You are unlikely to see puffins or oystercatchers in your garden but it has patterns for wren, spotted woodpecker, swallow, nuthatch, magpie, jay, sparrow, jackdaw, blue tit, bullfinch and blackbird.

hahahahahahhahaaha ... That first link is from the girl who set up a sewing school in Blandford ... These young things are so confident and clever and full of enthusiasm. She started off online doing tutorials like this and with help from her mum (who used to work at the wonderful Emporia in Stur. Newton that got taken over by the market traders and is now sadly a pitiful place) they set up a workshop on an Industrial Estate at the top of town.
It is going very well altho' she mainly teaches garment sewing I did a patchwork class there in May 2019 and I believe someone is now running a P&Q group there one day a week .. Ah the joy of self promotion!
-
Diane your cushion is absolutely beautiful, such lovely colours and it looks like a hot air balloon. I am amazed at just how quickly you make managed to make this. What is next in the pipeline?
-

@Elnnina Once you get the gist of how to piece together then it's quite an easy process. ooh what's next  i'm still trying to decide but i think it might be a wall hanging, i have a space on the wall behind my chair that needs something hanging there. I'll be using the same technique (FPP) as i found it really satisfying, was thinking of doing a block each month based on something that i see in or above my garden.
-
Sounds interesting Diane, shall look forward to seeing what you make - have fun with this one. You say you haven't got the room for a pouffe/tuffet so why not make the small tuffet and have this on your sewing table, the one I got my sister I was able to buy some little bun feet as an extra and she is thrilled with this. My sister waited until she had returned to Canada before she made this up and then this was on a brand new sewing machine which was awaiting her return - so a success all around and it was also the first time she had used the machine. I always like to try and find something a little bit different for her in the sewing/craft line, and this was was a tremendous hit.
-
@Elnnina I could make a smaller version as a pin cushion, i have a magnetic pin dish at the moment but i think a pin cushion would be handy, i'll get my thinking cap on.
-
Beautiful, and it really requires amazing patience! Have you managed to start it?
