Hello and thank you for letting me join. I am the proud owner of my late mum's sewing stash so am concentrating on a little stash busting - and some ideas! One of the first things I need to work on is a half-completed Jan Horrox cloth doll that mum started for me but never managed to complete.
I also have a few things in the naughty corner that I need to sternly deal with , like an overlocker.....
Look forward to joining you all
Di

Hello and welcome :)
Never, ever put an overlocker in the naughty corner, they are wonderful beasts 0_0
-
Welcome @Di . Looking forward to seeing your sewing projects.
-
Hello and welcome from me too.
-
Hello and welcome to TSP @Di! Hope you'll be inspired to finish the doll and other projects too.
-
Hi and welcome from me @Di :), take the overlocker out of the corner and tame it, you'll wonder what you ever did without it once you've demistified it.
-
Hello and welcome @Di . If you're near the Malverns I can nearly wave to you as I can see them from my perch 750 ft up in the Forest of Dean!
Beware of coming here to find out about overlockers, that's why I joined and several months later found myself falling into the abyss that is the Dark side :ninja:
-
Hi and welcome. Which part of Worcestershite are you from? I'm in Evesham but moved here from Kidderminster which I think boundary changes put in West Midlands. Enjoy your time here wherever you're from!! :)

Welcome to TSP.

Welcome to TSP, and welcome to that overlocker. Once you get to grips you'll never want to be without one.
-
Welcome from me....please venture into The Darkside ( patchwork and quilting ).We have copious amounts of coffee and Garibaldi biscuits :drink:

Hello and welcome!

Hi from me too.
The overlocker should not be in the naughty corner, they are one of the most useful tools to have. We’ll hold you hand when you have a go.
-
Hello and welcome to TSP
-
Welcome @Di get that overlocker out, they're so useful. You'll soon wonder how you managed without it.
-
I used to be the head cheerleader for the 'Overlockers are Evil' group on here. Then I bought one... and I love it!
Sometimes I get a bit of scrap fabric and run it through just for the pleasure of seeing it stitch. I was also surprised to find how often I use it on woven fabrics as well as stretchy ones. So neat, so clever, and as long as you keep your pins well away from the blade, so easy!
(And welcome! I used to live in Worcestershire.)

Hello from one Di to another, look forward to seeing what you make
-
Hi Di and welcome. I think you've probably got the overlocker message :). We're always happy to help, advise, cheer on and corrupt you.
-
Hello there, and welcome @Di !
Another Overlocker fan here - and when you make friends with it, you will wonder how you managed without it!
Look forward to seeing some of your projects!

Hello and welcome :D

OK OK I get the overlocker message! I will start the next sunny day (I sew in the conservatory, its so cold in there this morning!) Its the threading that concerns me, I gave up last time I tried bt will give it another go. I have the manual, and rather hopefully have nearly finished a bag to store said overlocker in so I have to use it now.
To those who asked I am in Bromsgrove with a lovely view of the Malverns.
now off to browse the rest of the forum for ideas! Thank you all for the lovely welcome!

@Di when I re-thread my overlocker I always watch a guy on YouTube then I can pause it as I go.

Great idea. I also saw somewhere tweezers help.
-
Definitely need tweezers
-
I literally can't thread my overlocker without tweezers! And always have to work from right to left, not sure if that is just mine or all overlockers though.
-
I always thread right to left (I think)
-
Hi @Di - a warm welcome from me too. :)
-
Welcome to TSP @Di Many years ago before I restarted my sewing journey a fellow colleague was always wear the loveliest of clothes, when I asked where she shopped she replied I make all my clothes on my overlocker! She didn't have a sewing machine. I have even seen that you can do patchwork with an overlocker, so bring it from the corner and welcome it back to life.
Enjoy :vintage:

I thought all overlockers came with tweezers? Mine (a Brother) did back in 1989 and I'd never used them for anything to do with sewing before then. Wouldn't even try to thread without them!
-
My overlocker would plot my demise if I put her in the naughty corner.
Take her out, apologise profusely and talk her, gently, through everything you ask of her.
-
Mine has tweezers.
And it doesn't thread right to left. It's 3, 4, 2, 1. It's all colour coded to make it easier, with a guide behind the door, though.

Hello! I'm also from Worcestershire originally, and had overlockerphobia at first. I need tweezers and really good lighting to thread it; I have a head torch for dark winter days. I remember reading a post by someone who could rethread one in under three minutes and can now join that club - it is doable and very worthwhile.
Although, cards on the table, I have a coverstitch machine which has become purely ornamental so I know how you feel!
-
Hello and welcome from me too.
I recommend Chris James' book The Complete Serger Handbook. I found my manual not terribly useful because I didn't know what I was striving for when I first acquired my overlocker, but this made it all obvious.
And yes, a pair of bent-nose tweezers is vital. I've also found them useful with the sewing machine for getting pins out from under the presser foot, say, and use them all the time since I had to go to A&E to get the sewing machine needle removed from my finger!

Hello Di and welcome. I am also trying to work through my mum's 'stash' (she is unfortunately now in a care home). The trouble is I can't bear to get rid of anything she has been working on, but I am not a patchworker so am trying to come up with ideas to incorporate her patchwork pieces into something I can work on!!

Hi
I don't have an over locker I do play on the Darkside and I live in Malvern.
Welcome

Upper looper, lower looper, right needle, left needle. That’s all you need.
