The aim of this is a quilt for a VW Campavan
it is for DD and SIL. The request was for zig zag retro in pale colours.
Much thought and a long time in Doughty's resulted in a Liquorice Allsort colour scheme. Doighty's were great and gave me a printout of the sweets
(https://image.shutterstock.com/image-photo/liquorice-allsorts-sweets-260nw-420759181.jpg)
So it will be a rail fence design with black zig zags
I have spent a couple of hours making the pattern so I don;t get the squares in ghe wrong place
It will be done in QAYG quarters (I hope)
Apart from the colours I have a Snoopy Campavan fabric and a Liqourice All sorts fabric for the binding
-
That should look nice and bright @Bjay . I'll be following this with interest as I like nice and bright ( and liquorice all-sorts!!) :)
-
Hello - cant wait to see what you do with these colours...
Looks sweet!

Scribble plan so I don;t put wrong colours in wrong place!

Today I have begun cutting strips
-
Well busy making strips, and cutting blocks.
I was trying to be oh so careful with the snoopy fabric.
Of course the campavan lines were not straight. Now I have just realised I have made one 'roadway' go the wrong way to the others.
Could be a mighty crash!
Spot the mistake!

-
Well a large quatity of 5 ins squares have been cut - 40 in each colourway.
Now wondering if I have balance right

Comments please

It flows well to my non-darkside eye.
Love your table.
-
I slightly prefer the second layout. Hard to say why but I think it's that I like the green and blue next to each other rather then opposite across the yellow.
-
To my eyes the blue is a bit strident. Could it go nearer to the middle?
-
Yes the blue is why I altered it. The 2nd picture now I have looked again seems better
@Ouryve the table is a bit rickety but it has a leaf that extends another 2ft which is the right size to quilt on or lay things out on. Thanks
-
You mentioned that the pic. is only a quarter of the finished article. Will that have a bearing on your final decision?
-
Quickly ... just noticed that the Blue and Yellow blocks are reversed as it were with the darker colours above rather than below ... if you see what I mean ... Is that deliberate?
Also the large pattern in the yellow blocks seems a bit out of sync/different?
-
@Iminei 1stly the pale yellow is Snoopy with a campavan fabric. And yes it is a bit odd
2nd the blocks, are sewn up now with the 2nd picture style.
That is a quarter of the quilt
It works out, I think, a bit small 26ins x 34ins.
Even Mrbeej thought it would come out small and made suggestions using technical language (to him) like, adding a border.
Just shows he does take in what I talk about sometimes
Think it will be a bit narrow ie 52ins as I could, add just another row but will see.
Fabric is a bit short on supply
I have a border idea but......
-
PS Looking forward to seeing @BrendaP instructions for QAYG as I as pondering doing the quarters like that
-
Fabric in short supply
-
Fabric in short supply - just the stuff I have used already to keep the pattern going
Half made now - 2 x 1/4's
(https://i.postimg.cc/d3J1SpLs/IMG-20220422-165453.jpg)
I think I will quilt each quarter and then sew together,=. it will make it easier on the machine
-
It’s looking lovely.
Is the red car on bottom left (as you’re looking at it) upside down?
-
Thank you
Oh, well, yes, shhhh!
-
Well spotted, @fajita . Isn’t it funny how it is so much easier to see these things on a photo?
Your quilt looks great, @Bjay .
-
It’s looking lovely.
Is the red car on bottom left (as you’re looking at it) upside down?
Thats the road from @rubywishes house! ;)
-
I have now completed 3 of the 4 quarters.
I now need to consider how I am going to make quilt top wide enough. Do I add wider borders or an extra row of blocks.
Also as I am QAYG the backing fabric needs to be chosen but there is, a, quilt show coming up, I may leave the decision till then.
-
@Bjay Quilts generally look better if the borders are the same all the way around so if it needs making bigger in one direction and not the other I would add another row of blocks,
-
It’s looking lovely.
Is the red car on bottom left (as you’re looking at it) upside down?
I think that whole section is upside down. The black stripe is in the wrong place? Whispering this, eversoquietly :lipsrsealed:
-
@Missie That was all unpicked and corrected just after @fajita made the comment.
Thanks for saying though
-
@Bjay , I made that quilt pattern many years ago when I dipped a toe in the P&Q pond, and although I loved it, it boggled my mind.
Yours looks lovely <3
Jessie
-
@b15erk it is certainly boggling my mind. I have a plan and cross off each row but, strange I know, it can set off vertigo. Getting better now though.
-
@Missie That was all unpicked and corrected just after @fajita made the comment.
Thanks for saying though
-
I didn't notice the cars on the pattern as I was just in awe at how much it reminded me of liquorice allsorts
That plan worked didn't it @Bjay :D
-
@Bumblebuncher I hope so.
I'll have to be careful with borders to keep same effect
Thank you
-
I quite liked the look of a Chevron border seen on internetso today I have been experimenting.
ThaNKS to the wonderful @Iminei pointing me in the right direction
The Flying Geese patch sis not my favourite go-to of choice but I do like the effect
I don't have a lot of fabric but I think I can stretch it by making chevrons as in pic 2.

Sorry pics are a bit big
-
I now think I have corrected all the zigzig's and the zagzag's and have the center of the quilt made. it is deconstructed to make quilting it easier. It is in quarters and a border is to go round probably 2 narrow ones in black with a chevron in the middle.
The wonders of Internet means I have found a chart giving sizes of fabric to make Flying Geese bigger or smaller for the Chevron
(https://i.postimg.cc/4352Xt1x/IMG-20220504-160508.jpg)
Rubbish photo it is much brighter than it appears
-
Absolutely Grand! Love your use of colours!
-
Love love love your design so much, it's looking fab! The colours are just my cup of tea as well :)
-
That is looking so good. That's my type of quilt and I love the colours. Looking forward to seeing the finished article. :thumb:
-
Looks gorgeous.
-
That is looking wonderful! It is going to be lovely, good work!!!
-
So I have unpicked one quarter of the quilt. I didn't notice until i came to add the border. I think spomeone else said the pattern makes you go a bit boggle eyed
I f you look at the picture and follow the main green line you will see a mistake slap bang in middle of the quilt. There are others BUt that one is very noticable. It couldn't stay.
No more unpicking I have promised myself
-
Oh dear, @Bjay , that’s a lot of unpicking. I think only you thought it was ‘very’ noticeable: the pattern is so bold that my eye only saw the colours between the black zigzags, not any pattern in the colours. I suppose , though, you’ll feel better having sorted it. It’s lovely.
-
I hadn’t noticed until you pointed it out, it could of course be a design feature
-
Hiya
I have completed and linked together the chevrons they now make a a border to be attached.
Hoping the Chevron strips are long enough
(https://i.postimg.cc/90RGvYTp/20220618-150424-1.jpg)
4 long borders and 4 short as i am making it in qurters to make quiltong easier (i hope)
-
I love the colours, it really makes it pop, can't wait to see the finished quilt.
-
Those look good enough to be a quilt on their own like that!! Love the colours. :thumb:
-
This is very slow progress.
Today I have attached the chevron borders. I have done all quarters but here is a sample half
(https://i.postimg.cc/x1jMpjB1/20220624-163204.jpg)
Next is another black border to make it wide enough
@Diane I don't know about the colours popping it certainly makes my eyes pop after a while :D
-
Those look good enough to be a quilt on their own like that!! Love the colours.
Not wanting to hijack the thread but .... 100 shades (https://photos.app.goo.gl/xMGXKFGkZF538MvD9)
-
That's really lovely @Bjay :thumb:
-
Busy afternoon .
It turned totally dark at one time. Not what would be expected for the middle of June so had to set up my daylght light
Anyway 4 panels are now complete. The black border is attached and they are squared off ready to start making sandwiches.
Feeling quite excited at this. First time I have quilted a de-constructed quilt.
Wath this space.
@Iminei I love your patterns - 100 colours - so intricate - a wonderful
-
@Flobear and @realale do you remembr the backing fabric. When I bought it I ended up buying extra.
Thank goodness i did as there is a pattern to match going across which I didn't realise until I unfolded the fabric.
So it means I have to match both the quilt top and the backing patterns.
Ready to make sandwiches now. Fortunately doing it in panels means they fit onto the dining table - no more back ache or dog and cat 'helping' as I pin
-
So glad that worked out, Beej. Didn't seem like a matching type pattern.
-
I didn't think there was a pattern to match on it @Bjay. Shows how we can be taken by surprise!!
-
@Flobear and @realale the coulous go across the fabric -in a sort of stripe so - red/orange , blue green
Not to difficult to match though
Have sandwiched 2 panels today
-
Made he sandwiches and have begun quilting -
So much easier in the smaller quarters than a whole quilt. Mind you they will have to be sewn together :S
Only catastrophe was sewing machine needle going tnrough fleshy part of finger and my 'ow' woke Mrbeej up!
-
It's the joining I hate
-
It's the joining I hate
[/quote
Thanks @Lowena. I'm nervous enoough about that stage - haven't done it before well only on the 2021 Quiltathon :S
I am certainly less stressed about the quilting this way
-
The quilting of the panels is done. I am not quilting the border until the panels are all joined together,
Progress today - I have joined 2 panels together BUT I have to unpick as the stitichimg looks terrible (thinks 'Thanks @Lowena)
Once I have mastered the joinng it is certainly easier than bunching a whole quilt through a machine
-
Once I've mastered the joining is the key phrase methinks @Bjay
-
IToday I have unpicked and redone the joins of the 2 panels (another 2 to go)
I ended up using traditional tacking and sewing along the tack lines.
All ends have been sewn in. I have matched the quilting on the 2 panels.
Now I have a better idea of what to do perhaps I won;t have to unpick too often!(maybe)
-
Well I now have a quilt sewn together - gosh it's bigger than I thought it would be.
I still have to do the final binding on the back. It's where i usually sliip up so am expecting unpicking. I will be surprised if I don't.
The fnal stage will be quilting the border and - of course - attaching the binding. It won't be finished this week now but hopefully by the end of next week it will be
-
Not perfect BUT finished

it is 84ins x 66ins
They also have a box of Liquorice All sorts to go with it
-
Looks marvellous, @Bjay - good enough to eat ;)
-
Oooh, I like it!! And that backing fabric is just the thing ;) Well done :perfect10:
-
That quilt is glorious, love the colours. :perfect10:
-
Well done. Gorgeous quilt. :D
-
The colours really glow against the black background. It's stunning :loveit:
-
Amazing, so vibrant, well done.
-
I have never been able to see any of @Bjay photos of her quilt. Are they hidden away somewhere private?!
-
They're all in the post, @charley
-
Thank you @Ouryve but they are not. In all the posts that I have read, about @Bjay quilt, there is a blank space where a thumbnail pic would/should be. I can see the screen shot that you have posted. The quilt, is indeed very lovely. Thank you for posting it for me
-
I think they are embedded from another source, rather than uploaded here, @charley.
-
@charley nothing secret about it. I just post them . Definitely not high tech enough to embed etc. .
I am sorry you have been unable to see my posts perhaps someone with 'The knowledge ' can work it out.
Thank you for saying and to @Ouryve for taking a screen shot :thumb:
-
THAT IS SPECTACULAR, WOMAN!!!! Well done you!!!!
