Hello again,
Thanks for that. It isn’t twill then. I will look for some medium weight poly/cotton then.

No denim in them at all. A cotton poly mix. Woven.

Hi,
I’m a very amateur sewer, so not sure on where to look for the fabric that I need for this project. I have a pair of excellent quality skinny “jeans” that I want  to widen to straight-legs. They aren’t really jeans, just made like them, and are a lightweight Cotton/polyester/elastane mix. Can you advise me on what search terms to use when shopping for this kind of fabric online?

Also, does it have to be exactly that mix of fibres? I imagine it’s the weight, and having a little stretch in it that matters most?

I’m nowhere near a fabric warehouse, so can’t really shop in person, which would be the ideal.

Thank you, but I already have some weights. I wish I’d bought a strip now, but I’ve got what I’ve got. I think they are 20g or so each.

In the wardrobe / Curtain weights - how heavy?

Hello,

I’m going to hem some medium weight, thermal backed curtains. They don’t quite reach the ground, so adding weight with a thick hem is not an option. I’m going to use some weights, and could do with an idea of how much weight per corner. Some of the curtains are made from one width of fabric. Some have 2 pieces joined side by side. I’m assuming I need another weight at the bottom of each join? I’m willing to try trial and error, but I can see this taking ages as I have no idea what I’m doing. Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone. I think that has confirmed what I thought.

Can anyone recommend a good thermal fleece for homemade oven mitts or a tea cosy? I wanted to use some old towelling, but have decided that a double layer of that would be too bulky in oven mitts. So then I wanted to buy some cotton fleece, but no one seems to sell it. I would rather not buy polyester, but it’s looking like that’s the only option.

I expect that’s what he meant @dolcevita. I will ask about washing then and maybe try it. Thank you

In the wardrobe / Paper fusible interfacing?

Hello,

My local sewing shop, which I like to support if I can, has only what they called “paper fusible interfacing”. The instructions for the zippered pouch that I want to sew state that I should use woven fabric fusible interfacing. I’ve done a bit of research, and can’t decide if there is a good reason to not use the paper stuff. Will it survive washing in the future? I was planning to wash my fabric first, but assumed that anything with glue on it shouldn’t be washed, so maybe not the interfacing?

Thank you for all those helpful replies . I used to hand-baste more often, so I could do that a bit more again. With the current curtains, I think I will try to place the tape so that I can avoid sewing through it. I sent for this tape online, the cheapest available, which might have been a mistake.

In the wardrobe / Is basting tape causing my machine to miss stitches?
« on: October 03, 2021, 15:15:22 PM »
I’ve had to unpick and start again on a curtain hem quite a few times now.  :faints: I’ve tried on my Singer 99k and Brother XL711. At first glance it looks like tension, because there is one line of thread lying flat top of the fabric. But on closer inspection, there are no loops coming up from below at all, so the stitches are not forming. If I lift the thread up, it comes away cleanly with no thread on it from the bobbin at all. It will go OK for a bit and then miss stitches again with no apparent cause. The only thing that I’m doing differently is that I’m using basting tape instead of pins. I have noticed that the needle shaft gets a bit gummy every now and then. When I tested for tension on a scrap of the same fabric (without basting tape), it was working OK, although admittedly I only sewed a few inches. Surely if basting tape caused this problem routinely, they wouldn’t be selling basting tape anymore, would they? Any thoughts?

Hello @Silverlake. I’ve just come back and seen your reply. Thank you for  that clear explanation. I’m going to have a go at this later on.

In the wardrobe / Brother Pacesetter xl711 Golden Stretch Needles?
« on: September 04, 2021, 09:14:43 AM »
I’ve inherited my mother-in-law’s lovely Brother Pacesetter machine. Reading through the manual it states that I need their “golden stretch needle” in order to sew stretch fabrics. I found one offer for golden stretch needles on eBay, and I could buy those. But as this is quite an old manual now, I’m wondering if there now other names for such a needle that I can search for online, so that I have more choices of seller.
