The Haberdashery / Bobbin thread for soft furnishing
« on: January 11, 2022, 20:17:50 PM »
My son has persuaded me to make him some piped seat cushions for a bench. I think I’m happy about the construction side of it. Just wondering if others with experience could advise on what to use in the bobbin on a domestic machine? It seems to me that the stitching will only be as strong as the weakest thread and I can’t put upholstery type thread in the bobbin. I’m wondering about nylon? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

Your Favourite Suppliers / Matching Sweatshirt Fabric and Ribbing
« on: November 08, 2021, 13:45:57 PM »
Please can anyone recommend a UK retailer who sells plain coloured cotton/Lycra sweatshirting, who can also supply the coordinating ribbing?

I can find plenty of sellers who do each one separately, but rarely do they actually advertise a proper match with each other. I have bought several which are “near enough’ but they never seem to be as good a match as you see in bought garments.  Thank you!

In the wardrobe / Birthday sweater
« on: January 13, 2021, 12:53:39 PM »
I wanted to share this adorable design on the birthday jumper I made for DGD. I know she will love it.  Missing my grandchildren like so many others. I’ve not seen this one since her third birthday.

Would anyone like an embroidery module which is compatible with slightly older Berninas? It is in perfect working order and has been lightly     used with a 580 and the older style 570. It is also compatible with a number of other models.  I now have a new machine and have bought a later compatible module.

Hoops are not included as I have decided to keep them to supplement the new module. Embroidery foot #26, computer cable and carrying case are included.

As any purchaser would need to already have or acquire hoops, all I am asking is £50 including shipping in original box (mainland UK), or £30 if collected from Warwick.

I am offering this lovely machine for sale as I am upgrading to a different Bernina.

It is not the latest model but the previous one with a 5mm stitch width. I bought it new in March 2017 and it has been treated with the utmost care. The included BSR  (Bernina Stitch Regulator) has been used only a few times.

https://www.bernina.com/en-GB/Machines-GB/Series-Overview/BERNINA-5-Series/BERNINA-570-QE
The specification is as given on the above link.
The compatible embroidery module (model S) is included, although it was purchased as a separate item.  It has been lightly used and is in perfect condition with all supplied hoops and accessories.
https://www.bernina.com/en-GB/Accessories-GB/Embroidery-Accessories/Embroidery-Modules/BERNINA-embroidery-module-S

There are still 3 years and 10 months to run on the Warrantee.
The stitch count is coming up to 1,080,000

The machine is in perfect working order. It was my intention to have it serviced before selling but I have been unable to arrange it due the current circumstances. It should be done in the next year and the price reflects this.

Price £1,700
Please pm me if you would like to arrange a personal video demonstration

Sewing Machines / Blind hemming machines
« on: September 26, 2019, 09:04:57 AM »
I am struggling with arthritis in my wrist and thumb and finding hand sewing increasingly painful.

As I sew a lot I have been wondering about possibly getting a blind hemming machine. (I have experimented with the blind hemmer foot on my SM and don’t much like the result, especially on lighter fabrics) They seem fairly inexpensive compared to other machines, but are they worth the space they take up?

Please can anyone with any experience of them offer any advice, suggest brands etc.

Your Favourite Suppliers / Fabric shops in Krakow
« on: December 08, 2018, 08:15:14 AM »
We are off to Krakow for a few days later in the week. I would be very grateful to hear if anyone who has been there can recommend any facbric shops worth a peek? I have bought some fantastic jersey from Polish websites and would feel rude not checking out the bricks and mortar possibilities while there

Fun with Fabric / Sweatshirt fabric hunt- can you help please?
« on: April 06, 2018, 07:25:35 AM »
I bought this ballerina fabric from Higgs and Higgs at the NEC sewing show to make my dgd a sweatshirt. When she saw it she was adamant that she would like a hoodie, which left me short of fabric for the waistband. Never mind, I thought, I will use ribbing instead.  However, despite having four different shades of grey ribbing, none of them look right.

Please does anyone have any scraps of this fabric I could purchase, or know where I might get some? (I wrote to Higgs & Higgs and they have sold out, without a prospect of getting any more.) I really must learn the lesson of buying extra fabric, but it was £16.99pm!
Thank you for reading.

Fun with Fabric / Allowing for shrinkage
« on: January 30, 2018, 11:57:54 AM »
As part of my current stay visiting family in NZ I have had a lovely time visiting  ‘The Fabric Store’ in Christchurch. Last time I made the mistake of making my purchases only to find they had a big sale starting mid January. So this time I was patient. Lo and behold - a sale giving 40% off most fabrics and 20% off the rest.

As the lady was measuring out my fabrics for cutting she reminded me that they always give an extra 10% to allow for shrinkage! I don’t think I have ever come across this anywhere else. I have only ever seen advice to buy extra.

Most of my purchases were plain fabrics suitable for trousers so won’t photograph well. On my second visit  this rather nice silk had risen to the surface in all the rummaging and asked to come home with me.

Fun with Fabric / Bed jacket envy
« on: November 04, 2017, 10:41:01 AM »
My granddaughter just turned 8 and requested I make her a bed jacket just like mine, right down to the toggle buttons. It amuses me, as I don’t remember ever wanting a replica of anything my grandma wore!

She also asked me to make a mermaid costume ( I don’t have one of those!)
