Fun with Fabric / Is There A New Nylon?
« on: August 31, 2021, 23:32:42 PM »
Hoping one of you may have run across this.

My nephew would like to dress well, but being exceptionally thin, most OTR clothing fits him like a sack. There is a fairly new company here in the U.S. called Untuckit, making and selling shirts for men designed to be untucked. Looking at the cut, I think DN could get a decent fit. Pricing ranges from $79 - $99 each, which is pricey compared to today's Chinese stuff, but taking inflation into account, it's what I'd have paid for any shirt in the mall back in the late 70's. AND it's made here.

My question: They have what they call their "Performance Line". It is 92% Nylon and 8% Elastane. This would be my personal version of hell on earth if I had to wear it - like being wrapped in cling film all day long. Unless - someone has done something new with the Nylon process. Does anyone know anything about this?

25 years ago, when 100% polyester microfiber was introduced, I loved it! It would breathe, not wrinkle, hold its color and not wear out. Of course all of that goes against today's standard of disposible clothing and I haven't seen poly microfiber offered in years- anywhere.

Has someone developed a nylon that does this?

The Untuckit company also offers cotton and linen, but I thought I'd find out what I could about the nylon before discussing with DN.

Thoughts?

I'm looking to identify a particular canvas. The UK tailor I'm watching on Youtube seems to be saying his vendor is "B & B Linings"  - but the B's are referring to actual names and I can't locate them online. Is anyone familiar?

I'm on my phone and can't post a link, so sorry.

Entering "tailor lee marsh" into a Youtube search will pull up his videos - which BTW are EXCELLENT tailoring videos. On his video for canvasing light weight jacket fronts, at approximately 15:56 he shows the canvas sample book. The name seams to be on it, but he moves it so quickly the camera never focuses well.

I'm simply trying to identify the canvas so I can hopefully source it here in the states.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Japanese Hand Sewing Needles
« on: November 30, 2018, 17:03:12 PM »
Manuela mentioned these in another thread...now I'm intrigued.
I LUV my Kai Scissors.

Any thoughts on these? Since deciding to "up my game" in the quality sewing department since my return, I am finding myself always returning to the long needles I used in my youth.

Amazon has some 6 needles for $9, and 30 needles for $4. All japanese. Will there be that much difference in quality?

Hi, I'm new... / Hello from Esme866

Glad to be here to discuss sewing and only those subjects truly close to my heart.

I've been reading for a couple of weeks and the atmosphere seems incredibly supportive.

I've sewn for many decades, but fitting this middle-aged body is proving quite problematic. Yuck pooey!

The support here is inspirational and I hope to help with tutorials once I join as a full member in a few weeks.

The Daks/tunneled waistband has been an eye opener for me. Elastic waist without the 'old fat lady look"!  But like all good things - there's extra work involved.
