Does anyone want these? I think they were free with magazines or something
I won’t use them so happy to give away no need for postage payment they’re light enough for a fist class stamp think I can stretch to that  :D

A Good Yarn / My crochet project
« on: August 12, 2021, 15:37:24 PM »
I have made half a double bed size throw and am a good way through the second half (about 70 rows to do.
Stitches used are: double crochet, treble stitch, griddle stitch, v stitch, bobble stitch, granny stripe, berry stitch, half treble, shell stitch, wide treble, and puff stitch.
The plan is then to crochet stitch them together changing colours to match, then there will be a 10 round border to include half treble, double crochet, trebles, granny stripe and bobble stitch

The first half took six weeks of evening crochet whilst half watching tele, the second half got started on holiday in July and is about two thirds done I think the huge area for the ten rounds of border will take as long too

I wanted a) to use up some wool, b) to try lots of different stitches and c) make something useful although I doubt if we’ll use it on our bed - too warm - but it might sit on the spare bed, or my niece might want it when she sees it as she loves this kind of thing

I’ve enjoyed every minute of this project so far and have seen a lot of improvement in my crochet along the way I think I’ll miss it when it’s finished!

Disappointingly the photo doesn’t do justice to the brightness of the colours but you can get the gist

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / seeking advice/opinions
« on: July 21, 2021, 14:08:47 PM »
from all you amazing folk

My sewing room has a door and window close together. I sew in the corner opposite to both. I would like to sew nearer the window, and buy a L-shaped desk so that I can have sewing machine on one part and my overlocker on the other (I get fed up of moving one to pull forward the other)
Anyhoo, DH has offered to get a man in to change the wall so that the door is on the opposite end (this is how the room opposite my sewing room is laid out, not sure why this one isn't) my question is:

What is your experience of sewing near/in front of windows, does the light have an impact? The room gets shade in the morning and sun in the afternoon and evening.

I like the idea of looking out at the garden and beyond, but am I just being a misty eyed romantic when the reality is that it will be too bright/dark/hot/cold etc...Thought I would ask before getting a man in and spending some dosh on the wall alterations.

House Beautiful / A curtain
« on: December 30, 2020, 16:56:30 PM »
Our conservatory is off the sitting room, it has no doors and last year in the January February months we found it was cold. The opening doesn’t lend itself to putting doors on it either so I’ve made curtains for it well I’ve made one of the pair today
I had new curtains from the old house that I’d made one pair I shortened for the sitting room window the other pair were too short for the conservatory opening but the fabric I cut off the other pair when I shortened them was enough to lengthen them so I did
It took me most of the day to do one because I had to take off the header tape, unpick the lining far enough down to work with, cut and pattern match the curtain, add to the lining, measure and put the header tape back on phew!

They are very full so will be gathered when hung and you won’t even see the join I’m sure. Obviously I haven’t hung them yet but will do the other one tomorrow and we can hang them on the weekend when we take down the Christmas tree
Here are pics of my pattern matching which on the whole I’m quite pleased with

Vintage Machines / It would be rude not to

Someone in the village has ‘an old singer hand crank sewing machine free to anyone that collects’  on the village Facebook page, so I’m on my way to collect it, no idea if it works or what state it’s in but I’ll have fun finding out  :D

A bit of a 'do' / summer wedding guest
« on: March 05, 2019, 16:03:38 PM »
We have our nieces wedding in July this is what I fancy making for it

View B

I like the flow of it, and I also think it would make a nice summer frock that I would wear out and about afterwards, all I have to do is decide on the fabric.

The only concern I have is that I think the sleeves are a fabulous feature, but the wedding although July is in Scotland and I know from experience that if it's a nice day it's wonderful but it tends to be rather chillier than here and it wouldn't take a jacket/cardi

And do you think it will be too low in the front to hide my woolly vest?  0_0 0_0

Courses & Classes / Pattern drafting course needed
« on: December 28, 2018, 11:01:41 AM »
Hello everyone
I want to do a proper pattern drafting course and DH is willing to pay for it as a birthday present  :)
The only one I can find that I would like to do is Alison Smith in Ashby de la Zouch which is £700 the thing is that the logistics of getting there for two days for three weeks will be difficult but I am willing to do it

When I search for same elsewhere all I get is pattern cutting for beginners or making blocks which is not what I want

Any suggestions?

Fun with Fabric / Fabric slueths needed!
« on: September 24, 2018, 11:09:07 AM »
Now I know there are some amazing fabric sleuths on here so I am asking for some assistance  :)

I'm after some fabric like this

For curtains
I am going cross eyed looking for same or similar, so would appreciate any tips or ideas

Thanks in excited anticipation

3 mtrs each patterned @ 112cms wide plain @ 146cms wife

Colour is hard to capture but nice muted lilac/purple/more on the pinkish end of the spectrum I guess but difficult to photograph

Cotton unused obviously

I bought it from a quilting shop because I liked it but I know I’ll never make it up so would rather it go to someone who will

A Good Yarn / Weight of balls of wool question
« on: June 22, 2018, 05:52:15 AM »
Hello everybody

I want to make a shawl for a friends expected grandchild one I first made more than 40 years ago and made lots of times since however when I dug out the very old pattern it just says 14 balls (3 ply)

I can’t remember if back in the day a ‘ball’ of wool was an ounce? Which would probably equate to 25g in today’s weight? Am I correct in my assumption nowhere in the pattern does it give the weight of the ‘ball’

As you will know I need to buy enough to complete it to guarantee same shade numbers

Thanks in advance for any knowledge for this old lady who can’t remember  :S

Fun with Fabric / Holiday sewing ideas wanted
« on: June 08, 2018, 21:36:59 PM »
Brain cells required mine have gone into hiding can I use yours please ladies and gents

We are off camping at the end of the month it will be walking and beach mostly and evenings at the tent. I always take some hand sewing with me something small for the beach and something more challenging for the tent last year it was paper piecing patchwork for the beach and Manx quilting cushion covers for the tent evenings and I also hand sewed a skirt and a top
I can probably find a garment to prepare beforehand but need some ideas for the small hand sewing project or even some different ideas for the tent

My head is currently too full of the beach skirt the walking trousers and the three tops I intend to finish before we go to think about what to take

Ideas needed please

What lies beneath... / Swimsuit cups
« on: March 20, 2018, 15:57:33 PM »
I am soon going to make a swimsuit for myself, well more of a top and skirted bottoms, the pattern says I need cups - fair enough I do like a bit of support - but what sort of cups? it doesn't specify, and would they just simply be my bra cup size?

Thanks in advance
I am making view B of Butterick 5795

Oh and if there is any advice on making a swimsuit I am happy to recieve it, after all I can't really make a toile with the same fabric, so not sure about sizing, for example swimsuits are usually snug, can I assume that if I chose a size from the back of the envelope that it will be right?
