For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / WANTED denim pieces
« on: March 02, 2021, 11:25:04 AM »
Letting out some jeans for a man who has put on weight with chemo.  I need pieces to let out the sides so he can  wear them a couple of more years.  First pair is darkish stretch Wranglers but there will be others. If anyone has jeans that are going into the bin, I could use the good bits.  Will pay p&p of course.

Patterns Discussion / bardot dress

Has anyone made this dress from Sew Simple?  The neck binding seems to be quite a long way short of the neck length.

House Beautiful / Tidying the workroom
« on: January 09, 2020, 14:00:30 PM »
One of OH's hobbies is electronics, especially  for hi-fi and he has lots of tools, both DIY size and miniature.  Years ago I made a tool roll for the big spanners and so on, which does help contain them.
Last year he was lamenting having to 'make do' with wrong sized tools for the tiny stuff. I found a full set of miniature spanners, both open end and ring sorts, online. They are not very strong, but they don't need to be.  I also made a mini tool roll to keep them in, which stops them getting scattered all over.
After recent posts, I wanted to share pictures, but the whole roll had gone AWOL.  Well, now it has resurfaced, at least it was easy to recognise in the  pile!

He also wants one for screwdrivers (once he has collected them all together)

Vintage Machines / Thingummiwotsit
« on: October 16, 2019, 12:22:55 PM »
Does anyone know the name of a tool for setting the height of a presser foot? Something like a feeler gauge, but 5/16" thick?
I wanted to align the foot with the feed dogs, but was afraid to loosen the screw that held the post in case the whole assembly dropped down.  Since it was stitching well I assume it is at the correct height, so I wanted to prop it up at that level while I tweaked the foot.  Nothing in the house was exactly that height.
(In the end, I managed with the handle of my red cleaning brush on top of the plastic cover of my little notebook and the end sheet inside. Phew! I would rather have the  ideal thing in my toolbox though)
What does everyone else use?

Vintage Machines / featherweight one thread embroidery attachment
« on: September 22, 2019, 17:13:46 PM »
Has anyone seen this?
I want one!  It folds the thread into a loop and stitches it down to make a beautiful chain stitch on top of the fabric. Like couching but with a single thread.  Unfortunately they are very rare and cost hundreds. There is a U spring on it which is irreplaceable.  Surely there are spring manufacturers still?
Watch the video to see the slow motion demo. Beautiful.

Sewing Machines / 222k and 221k what is the difference?
« on: September 07, 2019, 20:43:04 PM »
Looking on ebay,  the 222s seem to command a higher price.  What is the reason for this?  Are they any better, and if so, in what way?

Your Favourite Suppliers / foam
« on: May 22, 2019, 12:41:04 PM »
Just ordered some foam for a garden seat cushion from efoam.  Their website is a model of clarity, very easy to use. They take Paypal so I didn't even need to put in my address.  Small orders like mine they said could take an extra couple of days, but I ordered Monday teatime and it has just been delivered (Wednesday lunchtime). Very pleased indeed.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Going over seams on coverlock
« on: March 18, 2019, 17:11:14 PM »
I have been having trouble getting the Coverpro to go smoothly across the overlocked seams on a panelled jersey skirt. Tacking down the hem firmly on each seam, from cut edge downwards to the fold, made it go through smoothly. It was well worth the couple of minutes it took and easy enough to take out afterwards.
Hope someone else finds it helpful.

Fun with Fabric / hair canvas for waistband
« on: March 11, 2019, 11:18:17 AM »
I am making some trousers from a Vogue pattern, which calls for hair canvas in the waistband.  The band is shaped, so I can't use the lining/gripper  stuff on a roll which I have.  Does anyone know what weight of canvas would be best for this?
