Access All Accessories / Anybody ever tried to make a Faraday pouch?
« on: January 11, 2024, 13:46:01 PM »
The FB page for my mother's area has a recent post from the local police force recommending keyless car fobs be kept in Faraday pouches to prevent car thieves from reading the signal and spoofing your car.  The distance between car and fob needs to be more than 10 - 15 metres to prevent this and not many of us have houses that big.

My question is, how hard can it be to make a Faraday pouch given the correct type of screening fabric?  I've had a look online but it seems that wireless communications is a subject surrounded by a thick web of consipiracy theory and associated woo (Faraday smocks for expectant mothers, anyone?).

Has anyone tried to make a pouch and, if so, what fabric did you use for the screen (any old scraps will do for the outer fabric/lining) and did it work?

A Good Yarn / Anyone subscribe to Inside Crochet magazine?
« on: November 23, 2023, 15:01:10 PM »
I decided to get back into crochet as I think it will be less stress on the dodgy back than either sewing or knitting.  I haven't made a crochet garment for myself since my teens so where to start?  I had a look on the mag stand in the supermarket and picked up Inside Crochet (issue 163).  As well as the cover pic sweater, which I could see myself wearing, albeit with a higher neckline, I was taken with the Spirit of Flora designs by Jane Crowfoot.  I could imagine those being incorporated into a cardigan or jacket.

You can see what these medallions look like here

Does anyone subscribe to this magazine and, if so, please PM me if you think you can furnish me with scans of the previous designs.  Back numbers are about £8 a pop and these designs have been running since January!

Thank you

What would you put in the space?  I'm thinking fabric stash, obviously!  Currently my stash is in crates in the office/extension, embarrassing me with its vastness!

I have a notion to crochet a granny square jacket, waistcoat or pullover and I get on better designing knitwear myself than I do following someone else's pattern (truth be told, I've only done it once, a Donegal-type sweater, but it worked).  Does anyone have any pointers to books or blogs that explain the process of designing such a thing and calculating the yarn requirements?  Thank you  :)

The Show Must Go On / 1630's costume delivered
« on: May 02, 2023, 14:17:28 PM »
This is the costume I made for a friend who is going to the Czech republic in a couple of weeks for a 30 Years' War festival.  It was delivered at a re-enactment event at the weekend and here is the happy camper wearing it.

I did the cartridge pleats at waist and knee by hand.  I shouldn't have bothered.  The breeches are made of linen so the pleats just crushed down.  Next time I'll hand-gather them but the waistband is going to be attached using the machine!

House Beautiful / Double pinch pleat curtains - which header tape to use?
« on: February 19, 2023, 17:22:52 PM »
I've just purchased six windows' worth of fabric from Just Fabrics.  In order to keep the cost down I opted for the double pinch pleat heading rather than my normal pencil pleat.  My problem is that I can't find header tape specifically for double pinch pleats.  Which header tape should I therefore use?  I can make the pleats by hand - it will take a while but it's doable - but presumably I need to stitch some kind of Rufflette or similar to the curtains first?  I'm not sure, and my 35-year old curtain-making book doesn't seem to address this specific question.

Does the hive mind have any advice to offer?  Thanks  :)

I'm having a declutter and am getting rid of a bunch of patterns that no longer fit my lifestyle.  They are all free in return for a Large Letter SAE.  I'll post them in pairs (front and back) to avoid confusion (in me, if not in you!).  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Some potentially useful things, including sets of threads (500m polyester) that could be handy in overlocking, storage boxes, a cordless iron and a daylight lamp.

A Good Yarn / I found out about twiddle muffs today
« on: January 24, 2023, 13:02:14 PM »
I went on my mother's local FB page this morning and someone posted an offer for twiddle muffs.  No, me neither, so I turned to Google and there they were.  Looks like a sweet way of using up odds and ends of yarn for your local care home/elderly relative.

A Good Yarn / Now Scottish yarnbombers are at it!

This is about unusual Xmas trees in Scotland.  The crochet tree is halfway down the page.

The recycled stuff trees are in my home town, as it happens.  The old records one makes me shudder - can't bear to see vinyl mishandled!

Storage boxes and overlocker thread look the most interesting but the little sewing kits & accessory sets might be handy as stocking fillers for young needlework beginners.
