Patterns Discussion / Re: FREE Sewing Patterns
« on: May 01, 2023, 13:03:02 PM »
I love a good Freebie!  It was me who made the Bernina top, and I'm wearing one now.  Very simple, although I have changed the sleeve a bit, and put a cuff on it.

I'll be looking for the workout tee thanks @SewRuthieSews , that will use up some small leftover pieces.  I have a few free patterns, and if I can find them, I'll post them here

A Good Yarn / Re: Could this be knitted at home?
« on: April 27, 2023, 11:51:58 AM »
I think I would start by looking for a similar pattern - Ravelry is a good place to start.  I often see items which spark ideas, and then you just have to make them happen!

Knitting isn't as adaptable as sewing imho, and I would definitely use a pattern - unless you are an advanced knitter, in which case you could probably make your own...

Well, I spoke too soon.  Toile looked fine, so I went ahead with the dress, and found that the bodice was too long.

There are gathers under the bust, and as I was up-sizing it, I lengthened the bodice by an 1".  It seems that this is too much, and the bodice is sitting nearer to my waist...

Fortunately, I've sewn only with very long stitch, so it should come apart easily.

I thought it was too good to be true...

@Stitches  that's lovely  :loveit:

Well, the toile was OK, and I've not made any alterations to it.  What I have done, is to add a centimetre to each seam - just in case.  I've cut out the main pieces, just the collar, facing and buttin facing to cut out now.

The sewing looks pretty straightforward - and as I say that, I know something tricky will turn up to challenge my brain...

I love the fabric, and don't intend to line it, but to make a slip for under it - it's a fine burnout fabric, and I don't want a lining...

I'm early today, and checking in before I start tweaking the toile.

First sewing I've done for a couple of days, so it took me a while to bring myself up to speed.

See you all later!

The pieced dress has been put together, and looks OK, but it's minus sleeves and a funnel type collar because I didn't have enough fabric  :embarrassed: ... I'm going to try it without, but otherwise I'll have a look for some suitable lace

I've also cut a toile out for the other dress, but not sewed it together, so fingers crossed the alterations have worked OK.

I'm afraid I jumped ship early, because the sun came out, and I wanted to dig out the Wisteria stump  , try the new paint on the garage wall, and paint the barbeque.

Now I'll have to wait until Friday to do some sewing because my poor old bones are hurting

I'm early today as gardening is a no-no.  Far too cold for my old bones...

So, patterns chosen, and the first cut out straight from the packet, is almost ready to sew.  I say almost because I've had a little hiccough...  I managed to cut out the front of the dress, but I'm afraid the back is now in three pieces - and no sleeves... You know when you think you have enough fabric, and after cutting the front out, you realise that you really don't, well, this will be one of those dresses.  :embarrassed:

The second had already been cut out as a size twelve, and I've had to do more than a bit of jiggery pokery to make it fit.  So, for this one, I need a toile - just need to find suitable fabric for it.

I will report back later...

What a great way to use old CD's @Kad !

I have great hopes of showing my face later - unless a sudden heatwave means I need to be out in the garden - unlikely...

Funeral dress pattern will be choseen, and hopefully cut out.

A Good Yarn / Re: rag rugging
« on: April 18, 2023, 20:28:42 PM »
Can'tgive advice unfortunately @annierose , but would be interested to hear more about rag rugging.  I remember as a child, my mum had rag rugs all over the house!  Money was tight, and fitted carpets some time in the future!  ;)

I certainly have enough rags to give one a go!

Alterations Advice Please / Re: Sleeves on suede jacket alteration
« on: April 18, 2023, 11:08:32 AM »
Good idea @HenriettaMaria .  I often use hair grips when I'm making bags - you know the flat silver ones with a spring?  they are good because if you are sewing, they cand be easily removed as you go.  They are also useful for holding things in place while waiting for glue to dry.

@BrendaP , it's the end which screws to the needle which the cable has come adrift from. OH says he'll have a go for me - he has steadier hands!

@BrendaP , I found your post really reassuring.  I was beginning to think I was hopelessly inadequate that I couldn't just unpick the stitches where the problem lay.  Now I know that I'm doing the right thing by completely unpicking, and re-knitting.

I now have a different problem, my cable has slpped out of the screw on bit...  I nearly lost all my stitches, but looked down just in time.  Now waiting for another to arrive, in the meantime, I wonder if superglue will do the trick?

@Acorn you're right.  I don't seem to have much trouble with a cable pattern as it is bold, and quite easy to see.  The pattern I'm doing now is quite a subtle diamond pattern, and it's easy to miss a wrongly facing stitch.

I'll keep trying with the small area correction, after all, the worst that can happen is that I have to unpick the rows anyway.  I just had difficulty yesterday, as to correct the stitches, they have to be twisted...

I do wish that when these tutorials went on YouTube (or similar), they would show a correction with a pattern.

@Ouryve , I do use a crochet hook, as it make things easier, but it's the manipulating of the stitches I find hard.

I think I just use patterns which are above my pay grade...
