It's looking good Susana!

You have a lot of patience.  One toile - and only if I've lost/gained weight is all I usually manage!

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: My first applique!
« on: July 17, 2017, 12:05:10 PM »
I use the 'Blanket Stitch' when I do applique, I find it doesn't look so heavy as a Satin stitch.  If you use Heat and Bond, or similar, you don't need to turn the edges.

Will you be lining it Jean?  If so, attach the facing to the lining.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Old patterns

I have several boxes full of these, and they will never get used.  They were given to me when a customer's wife closed her sewing shop.

I think I may have used a couple.

Can anyone think of a person or institution which may be able to use these?  Otherwise they will go to the local charity shop.

They are all lacking their front covers, but are otherwise unused.

Love it RD!  I only ever wear maxis on holiday, and they are perfect.

Your fabric is gorgeous.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Price?
« on: July 14, 2017, 11:20:59 AM »
I rarely pay more than £5 a metre, I'd come over faint I think!

I'm happy with my local outlet where the measures are generous, and prices more than reasonable - usually about £3.50, unless it's something special, or furnishing/curtain fabric.

Love it when I get a lovely remnant for coppers :)

Patterns Discussion / Re: Flimsy tissue patterns?

Hi there SP, there are some better quality patterns out there, off hand I'm thinking Stylearc.  Lots of us also download and print patterns, which can work out cheaper, and obviously more robust.

I would say though, that I rarely use a pattern from the envelope, I trace it.  That means I can go back and use the other sizes too.

The Haberdashery / Re: Pearl snaps?

Did you find these Fiona?  I have plastic Kam snaps, which are great for Kids stuff, but not so for grown up shirts!

I like the idea of the pearl ones, I've seen it several times on rtw.

Tech Know How / Re: Amazing translation resource
« on: July 13, 2017, 11:08:46 AM »
I could have done with this last week.  DD was translating a knitting pattern into French for a friend, but she is no knitter, so she called me - who has little French, but I can knit.  What a job!

What was this urgent commision?  A dolly's cardigan!!  Some friends are just - well just beyond anything! Grrrr.

Fun with Fabric / Linen, and linen mix
« on: July 13, 2017, 11:04:08 AM »
I have a couple of pieces of fabric which I'm hoping to make into shirt dresses.  After my last experience with loose weave fabrics, does anyone have any tips, to stop the seams from pulling?

I've pictured both fabrics, as you can see, the first, the Linen Viscose, is a very loose weave, but it's a lovely weight.  The second I'm not sure is linen - no lables, maybe a fine cotton.  It's quite lightweight.

Any suggestions of how to treat these fabrics will be appreciated.  I love both, but would rather not have the seams splitting if I can help it.

Stasher here too!  In my defence, although I have a local fabric shop (I know, I'm one of the lucky ones), it sells a lot of discontinued or roll end fabrics, so, if you don't buy when you see, it may not be there next time!

Unfortunately, I have enough fabric to last me not only in this life, but to take with me to the afterlife!  ;)

eta:  I do hope there's a sewing machine there!

Susana, your patience is amazing!  I must say, if I find a pair of trousers which fit, I do tend to make a coupe of pairs.  But, what I have found, is that even though I've used the same pattern, same size, same seam allowances, the fabric itself can make a difference to the fit.
