Sewing Spaces and Furniture / The start of a new regime?
« on: June 26, 2018, 12:46:10 PM »
Impressed with other sewing rooms I've taken a hard look and decided moving clutter round is not the way to go.  I found a bargain on Ebay, of something I have very similar in the conservatory for hiding rubbish (not mine I might add).  Some muttering when it arrived more expense)  but the young man even carried it upstairs for me.  I've got another two corners to go but this is a good start.  Found fabric I'd forgotten I had!

Before

And after

The overlocker was going on top but a bit too high for me to lift it so got to find another home for it.  The sewing machine will be on a tailor made table, narrower, but easier to move around to different places without dropping.

I'm going to work on a new regime, everything to do with a new project goes in the left over  baskets.  Can't lose anything then, can I?

I'd like to say no more fabric, but Clothspot had a remnant sale at the weekend and couldn't resist.

It really hacks me off when you go hunting for fabric, find something you think will be suitable but then all you get is picture of the fabric, what it is, price and width.

What you really need is what is the fabric is made up of; what the washing instructions are; what the weight is; what are suitable uses for the fabric and if you are really lucky  a nice description and video of the fabric.  Which is why I like using Clothspot even though some of the stuff is expensive.

I looked on MacCulloch and Wallis last night and all you get is bare necessities.  Some of us like a story to tempt us.

In the wardrobe / Another fine mess just avoided
« on: May 24, 2018, 16:10:44 PM »
I completed by moto jacket a few weeks ago bar the snaps, two on either side.  Being a bit nervous because it was the first time I'd done them I had waited until all my ducks were in a row and DH out of the way (he tries and helps and I wanted to do it myself).  Main worry was the fabric where the snaps were had some decent interfacing and fabric a good weight, so I knew that might be a problem.

Anyway the sample was fine but needed some hard knocking.  Got the first side on top done, getting anxious because it really did need brute force. Perfect, feeling much better I did the second hole, perfect.  Just ready to put the top snap on I dropped the top one onto the floor, picked it up and  stared a bit more closely at my hole. I'd put the hole on the flaming collar .  A bit of swearing, not much considering, I went through my options.  First thought, take the top side of the collar off, replace and stitch the back hole up.  Went down to make a cup of coffee and had a rethink.  All the jackets I've seen recently have  two snaps each side, collar and the facing piece.  So gone with another one on the collar, which didn't take as much hammering.

I'm relieved but left it for another day for the bottom snaps.  I hate doing stuff when I've been flustered.  The tool I got with the first set of snaps has split open on one side, which is just as well I got one of the pyramid tools and the plier set (that made a lovely hole with no messing).

In the wardrobe / I am slowly but surely going completely barmy
« on: April 12, 2018, 16:16:37 PM »
I am making this for the second time.
http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/Vogue-9015.html

First time I was short on fabric with looking at the wrong view and finished up adding a band in a different fabric, which worked out that well that that I decided to do again but not quite so broad and just on the sleeves and pocket flap (a deviation from the pattern).

I have now reached the sleeves so need to add my band before stitching together.  When I cut the pocket inner lining out I had worked out I had more than sufficient for two bands.  The smaller scraps I stuffed away just in case they would be useful in future, the rest I left out.  So where the heck are they.  They were on my cutting table with the rest of the large leftovers from the garment body, the scraps in the plastic wallet are still there. I've turfed everything out in between fabric, on the floor, in the patterns in the bins, behind tables, under machine covers with the box of scraps saved just in case.

I'm beginning to think I am living in fairy land and my imagination of wanting sufficient fabric has conjured it up and now I can't find it I'm in the real world.

I've ordered some more, which means some time over the weekend I am sure to find it.  I had better because if I don't I will know for sure!

In the wardrobe / Can't see the birds for the trees
« on: March 30, 2018, 15:03:25 PM »
I made this two years ago:

http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/Vogue-9015.html

I loved the dressing gown that much that apart from when it got put away when it got colder, it never got ironed.  Washed in a morning, worn at night.  So thought I would make another one.  Spent £45 on some lovely lawn with apple blossom and birds on, cut it out to discover the birds were the wrong s****** way round on the branch.  I'd set the sleeve piece on one side to cut out later but I've cut them now the right way up as well as the belt.  I'd already decided to do the pockets differently so hopefully it wont be that noticeable at the  front although old eagle eye will see it and have a snigger.  I'll just not turn my back on him.

Daft part, I am usually so careful about  right and wrong ways, I think I was that eager to start  something else.  Must have been that flipping pigeon flying around Morrisons put the mockers on.

What I like about this is that the belt is fixed in so it doesn't shunt around all the time.

I've bought some recently in a set of 10 for around £36.  These have appeared from the same seller, 20 for £36.99, a bargain that I couldn't resist.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GUTERMANN-MARA-120-SEW-ALL-INDUSTRIAL-20X1000M-Assorted-Colours-Special-Mix/162929861698?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

Might be useful if someone wants to split an share the cost if they live close enough.

In the wardrobe / Morris Jacket -
« on: March 23, 2018, 13:31:06 PM »
It really hacks me off when you see something that everybody loves and you make it and you look  a dog.  Use your bust size it said, I did, but still not comfortable.  Some pictures seemed to show it hang funny, I interlined mine  and it was fine.  The sleeves seemed a bit narrow and I wanted them long so I changed to two piece sleeves and had trouble fitting them into the armhole.  I wanted it longer, held the pattern against me but never noticed the back neck was included (that was a bit of baby brain for over a month, (right prescription wrong brand), looked too hippy..

I got to nearly the end, looked at it laid out and thought why waste my time, bundled it up and shoved away, another stone off might do it.

On the other hand this has turned out fine:

I just wish I'd gone with the colour I originally intended.  I'm biting my nails over doing the heavy duty snaps next.

The Haberdashery / Gutermann Thread
« on: March 02, 2018, 13:05:10 PM »
I prefer this to any thread and over the last few years I have managed to get a nice stock of it, normally Mara 120, which I really like for sinking into the fabric, if you haven't got a good match, it doesn't matter.  I know the normal sew all is slightly thicker but what I didn't realise until I was looking at the Gutermann page, was that Mara 100 Gutermann was the sew all you get in the shop and Mara 30 is the topstitch thread. In another forum that I'd picked up on a Gutermann search, there was a trail of conversation from Gutermann service department, in which they commented that Gutermann sew all was grossly overpriced, presumably at the consumer end and not theirs.

So having a big red project soon I looked for some Mara 100 on Ebay, found it, bought it, then noticed it had 5000 meters on, probably why they think the small spools are overpriced.  Good job I've got some large spool holders.

Technical Help / How close should facing be to the slanted zip
« on: March 01, 2018, 18:33:30 PM »
I'm doing this
http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/McCalls-7694.html

Looking at the left hand side as you wear it, the front facing butts up to the left side of the zip.  How close does it need to be to the zip?

The Haberdashery / New trick found
« on: February 28, 2018, 18:34:26 PM »
I recently bought some of those fabric clips from Barnyarns for a project to start later in the year.  Putting a zip in a new jacket I thought I would see if they would work with zips.  Well I am well impressed, worked a treat, much better than pins that slip. :)

I've lusted over this for a few weeks and my finger has nearly hit the button a few times, but, I have no idea how to sew it and all that I know is that you get a lot of fur flying around from around the edges so I think I'll leave it to someone with better sewing skills than I have.  Looks fabulous and rather this than the real thing

Only got one colour, red, but at that price I can live with my favourite colour.  I've already got a lovely Burberry style lining ready as well,  I've seen this fabric at nearly £30 a meter.

Saw it first on the Guthrie & Ghana blog with a Kelly jacket

Don't know whether it is a bargain or not but it does have 1 years guarantee.  Fortunately I am managing to control my whims of fancy  (at one time I would have walked over coal for this machine).

I finished up with the Husqvarna Mega Quilter, which I must admit is fearless at punching a hole in anything.

In the wardrobe / Butterick 5566 - Consistency on sizing
« on: October 23, 2017, 15:15:48 PM »
Monday is usually a good day for sewing and with a bit of rain last week and not going out I've done well.  I'm making Butterick 5566.

http://www.sewdirect.com/acatalog/Butterick-5566.html

I've had it for a bit and was looking for something I'd not done in skirts for winter and with some stretch denim this seemed ideal.  I'm roughly a 14 (in some parts) going on 16 in others so for skirts err on caution with the waist.  I've only ever done one other Butterick skirt and even with caution finished up having to let the seams out.  Since I've lost some weight I did size 14, pinned and tried on.  I'd pinned on the outside first and it looked a bit big but not much so I turned the right way round and pinned again, taking a bit more off.

It looked huge on me and I've not lost that much weight round the hips and stomach.  In the end I've machine tacked on the inside of the pins and finished up with ginormous seams that I'm going to have to overlock again to cut off.  Mind you it does fit nicely now.

I just wish they would be all consistent on sizing.

The Haberdashery / Buttons - Habby World
« on: September 24, 2017, 09:59:35 AM »
I've been getting my buttons from Totally Buttons but the latest lot, didn't look quite right and the one I really wanted was not the right size and another one, which I got to compare previously, they no longer sold .  I had got a second lot from them that were fine but a bit drab so I started looking and came across Habby World, which had the button I wanted and the right size.

What fascinated me though was the website, never seen one like it, very plain and a bit home-made looking.  Has anyone else used them before?
