A Good Yarn / Re: Circular Knitting Needle Question
« on: October 21, 2021, 10:12:19 AM »
Now started a new cardigan that requires a 2mm circular pin, so I bought a Knit pro one after reading suggestions here. It knits beautifully with no snagging, but today I have a sore finger from the very sharp point. I suppose that’s unavoidable with such a small needle. I might have to put a plaster onto protect my finger in future - you can’t win!

I have a leather sashiko thimble which I have to use with certain needles/yarn/gauges. It's the side of the finger on my left hand that gets sore - I think I must use it to help the needle through, but my knitting is too instinctive to slow down and work out what is happening (if I overthink, I can't do it!) so I just use the thimble!

Right. Mum’s second toile! I had some cheap cotton in a similar colour to the silk so hopefully we can use this to get a sense of the finished dress as well as perfecting the fit. I’ve cut and pinned the lace on place, and I’m really pleased with how it’s looking, but I can’t get the hem of the lace to stand out as much as I want. I have 25mm horsehair pinned in in the picture. Any ideas for what I could use for a more dramatic trapeze hem?

I agree, @Bumblebuncher   my stats are similar to yours.  No way would I struggle into an all in one.  And the loo issue is a major one for me, I'm shuddering at the thought of dashing into a public convenience and having to completely undress.  I did wear a 'flying suit' (as it was called back in the day) way back in the early 1980s, can't remember where I bought it but I loved it on me then.  But that was then, and now is now, and I'm older, wiser and with a considerably weaker bladder

More than a few years ago I made a fabulous black silk culottes-dress-playsuit. It had a sheer yoke, so I sewed in a strapless bra which I thought could double as a stay. It would have been a great idea in a dress. In the toilet of a nightclub, I realised my error as it meant I had to pretty much get naked to use the loo!

On the other hand I do like a good pair of dungarees, but the I usually wear a t-shirt under those!

Just gorgeous. :loveit: When is the big day @charlotte ? Bet you can’t wait to wear it and show it off to everyone.  :VV:

Not until February… luckily as there is still lots of bridesmaid and mother of the bride sewing to do!

Patterns Discussion / McCalls 8121
« on: September 20, 2021, 10:33:03 AM »
Just bought McCalls 8121. I have a Liberty print moto jacket which I love, but it is linen mounted on mid-heavy weight cotton twill, and the linen is starting to wear at the cuffs, and it's picked up a good deal of ingrained dirt, which I can't get out with gentle washing, but I think it might start to disintegrate in a hotter wash!

In Liberty at the weekend I saw they now do a Tana Lawn oil cloth, so I'm going to have a go at a new version with that (again mounted on a twill).

The last pattern was self drafted but I've put on a little weight since then, so I thought I'd just buy a pattern this time. I've got McCalls 8121, which looks perfect, except I think the zip is on the wrong side! What does anyone else think? My current jacket has the zip on the other side, and all the pattern and RTW pictures I've looked at have it on the other side. I can easily reverse the pieces to have it on the other side, but should I? Am I overthinking it? Is there a 'rule' for moto jackets?

I've decided I need this for my Scotland honeymoon in June, so I've got plenty of time...

Pictures of ME IN MY DRESS!

I am very happy with it apart from the back button bands not sitting straight. I have a slight adjustment to make on the shoulder seams, which I hope will help, and I will experiment with different types of boning. Again, that will have to wait until I have someone to button me in (October, when my mum visits). Worst case scenario solution is lowering the back neck, but I hope it won't come to that. It was fine on the toile, but I think the tulle is just not strong enough to hold itself up.

Would it help if you did some piecing? I'm thinking the fronts won't be big enough to have a full motif, so maybe you could get away with adding a seam at the waist? Of course, this may not help at all...

I used to always use Netprinter, but I have recently started using the Foldline, purely because I decided I'd rather support a sewing pattern selling business than a printing one. Both are great.

I love understitching. I have even been known to do it by hand where machine-understitching won't work.

Finished another bridesmaid top!

Had a bit of a nightmare, because I changed my mind at the last minute and put in an invisible zip instead of a separating one, but I forgot that meant I should put in my all in one facing before the zip. :headbang:

I decided that cutting the facing into separate neck and armhole facings was better than unpicking, and I think it's worked out okay. It's maybe a little bulky on the strap where the overlocked edges meet, but it probably lies better than it would have with the original all-in-one facing.

I hate working with satin and avoid it where I can. The only way I will use it is if I can underline it with cotton lawn. Sorry not to be any help!

I would definitely do a dress. Probably something long-ish with sleeves.

But a top would also be nice. I'm imagining a sleeveless top with a twist front.
