Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Janome coverpro 1000cpx
« on: December 27, 2019, 23:30:39 PM »
I bought this machine yesterday and my first stitch test on a light weight rayon knit looked fabulous but I am wondering about pulling the fabric/threads out at the end of the stitch.  It feels very tight.  I don't know if that's normal. I would think not. I followed all directions from the manual but it doesn't discuss how this should feel.  Any suggestions on how to make it looser when ending the stitch?

Fun with Fabric / Re: Nooooooo!
« on: December 26, 2019, 21:44:29 PM »
I've not opened any emails today so it will probably be best not to for a few days.  I'm not actually tempted though as I have too much fabric and too many patterns as it is.

However, I'm going to go buy the CoverPro 1000CPX later this afternoon.  It's a planned purchase that I thought I would have to buy online but as it turns out the local dealer has them for the same price.  I probably won't get the bonus accessories however I'll also not have to pay shipping which is pretty high.

Access All Accessories / Re: Simple man sewing.

This is what I like about having the ability to sew.  If you think of something you'd find useful but it either doesn't exist in the marketplace or is ridiculously expensive you can make it instead.

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Re: I've got battle fatigue
« on: November 22, 2019, 18:11:11 PM »
I do think though that I am more organised and disciplined than I would be in a dedicated sewing room. I think that there I would spread out and rarely clear up properly and probably never be able to find anything.

I can confirm this is a problem.  I have a dedicated room and it always looks a disaster.  My house is otherwise quite neat and tidy but the sewing room not so much.  It's also too crowded and tends to get some of the overflow from the rest of the house.  I really need to get it better organized because I don't find it a pleasant space at the moment.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Strip quilt question
« on: November 22, 2019, 17:19:54 PM »
I will be using mostly fat quarters but also some strips from 1/4 yard pieces and random scraps.  I am making a flannel backed lap quilt for Mr MC.  His niece gave me the flannel for Christmas a couple of years ago.  I didn't even know she knew that I sewed so it was kind of a surprise.    I want to make it fairly quickly since I don't enjoy quilting very much.

I also thought it could be a quicker way to use up my rather large cotton stash since I don't want to quilt any more and I can make only so many napkins and pillowcases.  Most of the future quilts I make will be for charity.

Tech Know How / Re: Automatic Payments cancelled?
« on: November 21, 2019, 04:27:39 AM »
Rene, I've paid via PayPal the last two years and it's just like any credit card payment.  You can pay via PayPal without having an account.  I don't have one nor do I want one as I've a dislike of them. They try to get you to create an account but you can decline.  They'll give you the option of paying in US dollars or Pounds.  If your CC charges for foreign money then you're probably better off letting PayPal charge you in dollars and take care of the exchange. Be prepared to get questioned by your CC company.  You can preemptively let them know you're making a foreign transaction.

Really though it's a simple transaction.  I buy foreign stuff regularly and have never had a problem.  Only time I had a problem was domestically.  You can also see if your CC company offers one time numbers to use.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Strip quilt question
« on: November 21, 2019, 04:14:14 AM »
Has anyone ever made a strip type quilt where you sew strips one end to the other until you have a very very long continuous strip.  Then you fold it in half (lengthwise) and sew it up.  Then take that and fold it in half again and sew up on side.  Repeat as many times as it takes until you have run out of length at which point you should have a top.

I was thinking about doing this in a lap size using red, black and perhaps a small amount of gold but I'm a little worried about how it would actually look. It would be random.  I would probably use 3 or 4 inch strips.

Edit: I was looking for this a few days ago and couldn't find anything but tonight I added "continuous" to my search and found this link. She does the corners like you would for binding. I probably wouldn't since it seems like more work than I want to do.

What's disturbing to me is the picture with the dye powders on bare hands.  I've done a fair amount of dyeing in the past and always wore gloves and dust mask while mixing.

Patterns Discussion / Re: New Simplicity patterns

Nothing for me here either.  I don't use Simplicity though. Last time I tried it was a disaster.  Ridiculously over sized and illogical instructions.

Sewing Machines / Re: Do you use your decorative stitches?
« on: September 27, 2019, 16:21:44 PM »
I will add that I do use the utility stitches.  Primarily the seam/overcast and the blanket stitch.  I have one stitch that does a wavy S shape that's fairly long and tend to use that when I quilt diagonally because then I don't have to concern myself with trying to obtain perfectly straight grids.

I have found the seam/overcast on my Viking #1 is more secure than the one from the serger.

Sewing Machines / Re: Blind hemming machines

Are the types of things you sew not conducive to using a machine stitch?

I don't sew by hand at all** as it causes me a great deal of pain.  I just make a machine hem with closely matching threat so it doesn't show.  I don't follow pattern directions either.

**  I might sew a button on by hand but in reality I haven't made anything requiring buttons in 15 years or more.

I don't use them very often but have experimented with different ones on the napkins sets I periodically make.  I've used the letters to personalize a larger square for the back of a quilt.  But I don't recall ever doing anything decorative on clothing as I'm concerned that it would look a little too homemade.

So far I've preferred the honeycomb stitch for the napkins as I was trying to do something that would cause them to not folder over so easily when they came out of the dryer and it actually worked pretty well so I see myself using it in the future.  Plus I liked the way it looked.

Sewing Machines / Re: Do I really need a back up sewing machine?
« on: September 15, 2019, 17:39:21 PM »
I think it really depends how much you sew.  I originally bought one when I was making  nearly all of my clothes in the early/mid 2000s.  I had to take my Viking in for service and because the work was done at a different place than where I took it the turnaround was three weeks and that was too long for me at the time.  Now that I am sewing less these days it's not really something i need so much anymore but it was relatively inexpensive so I see no reason to get rid of it since I have the space.  At the point we decide to make our move to another state I may reconsider.

I think it looks good.  I'm impressed.  I tried to FMQ once and it was a disaster.

Sewing Machines / Re: How many machines do you have?
« on: September 04, 2019, 01:56:34 AM »
I have four:

Viking #1 which is now 22 years old and I hope it lasts as long as I do because I don't ever want to replace it
Memory Craft 4800 which was purchased as a backup machine
Janome Gem Gold 660 (very light weight) purchased for traveling
Babylock Imagine (serger/overlock)

In reality I use the Viking 99.99999% of the time.  I never took to the serger though i will keep it because I'm thinking about revisiting it after I retire next year.  I would like to buy a coverstitch since I sew primarily knits and will probably do so in the next six months once I figure out what I want.  I should probably get rid of the Memory Craft since I've only used it a hand full of times and if I had to be without the Viking for an extended time I could use the Gem.
