I use PR (when I remember) and also blog posts when I can find them. But a lot of the reviews don't provide very useful information.  From my perspective what makes a good pattern is one that is well drafted with proper notch marks.  While good instructions are nice they're not imperative for me as I have years of experience.  I find it odd that people complain about Style Arc instructions yet are more forgiving about Burda magazine ones which are similar.  And then there's Marfy!

I tend to look at the Style Arc pictures and maybe read the instructions for order of operation since it can matter in things that are more complex.  For easy-intermediate level patterns I tend to use the techniques I've favored over the years.  Overall I prefer easier patterns because I favor prints which would get lost in detail.  I despise overly wordy instructions (I'm talking to you Louise Cutting).

I'm amused by "true to size" as well though it is frustrating that brands don't create consistent sizing amongst their sizes from one style to another even taking ease into consideration. Reviews that explain why they chose the size they did are most helpful to me.  I usually measure something similar in my closet and choose the size that is closest.

Probably the most helpful part of a review is seeing the fabric type used as I sometimes go out of the specified range.  However, patterns that just list things like cotton, linen, rayon aren't very helpful.  What weight/type?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Re: Funny Faces BOM

I like the dragon and frog but I think the octopus is still my favorite.  :thumb:

The octopus is darling.

It's a hassle to send stuff to other countries. I've done it several times via USPS and you have to fill out a form with value not to mention the postage itself is high.  It's probably not worth it for most small businesses.  Using UPS, FedEx and the like would most likely be even more expensive.

It would make more sense for small pattern companies to sell digital versions.  I didn't think there were many left that didn't offer them.

Maybe I will try yet again with the Style Arc Como outfit (cardi, pants, top).  Pants and top from marine Dutch Cotton Lycra and cardi from a pinkish sweater knit.   I hardly ever seem to stick with my plans though.

Plus, although i do use PR i don't really find many of the reviews helpful, they are too generic.

Oh I agree.  Many people write crap reviews.  I try to write useful ones explaining why I chose the size I used, how well the draft was and sometimes critique the instructions even though I often do my own thing and don't follow them.  But sometimes seeing the pictures can help.

I remember that one. I rather like it sleeveless though I never bought it but I might have to now.

I took a look at the reviews on PR but nobody seemed to shorten it. https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/90330

One person said it was easily adjustable though they didn't specify length.  I know these odd shaped patterns can be more difficult to modify.  I thought the more successful versions were made of drapier fabric like rayon rather than linen or cotton types.

I'm obviously not their audience.  While the first two on the top left with the odd shoulder and midriff showing would have been OK in my younger/fitter days there's no way I'd wear that type of thing now.

What lies beneath... / Re: Bra Shapes

@Ouryve spaniels ears?  :laughing: :laughing:

You're right ... they probably don't work for everyone.  I'm only a D cup so I've no idea about GG cups.  I just know I like a smooth look and no lace or seams that show through the knits I mostly wear.

I can't stand seams in bras and used to hate the underwires.  For years I wore sports bras but with age and a bit of weight gain those no longer worked for me.  Then I discovered the Body by Wacoal Underwire Bra which is an underwire with smooth cup (no seams).  First time I ever found a comfortable underwire and now that's the only brand I will buy.  Sometimes I try some of their other seamless styles in various colors when they're on sale but none of them have been as good as this one.

That is so great @Ouryve that you were able to make three distinct styles from the same pattern.

I have this pattern but never made it because I realized the size (10) I had copy shop printed was probably going to be too tight in the bust area.  I had always planned to use rayon or possibly a light weight linen.

In looking at the makes on PR I think I'd stick to fabric with drape.  Also it seems like the armhole could be a bit tight on some people.  Just things to think about.

I look forward to seeing your rendition.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Help with decorative stiches

@Lachica I was wondering why the "honeycomb" stitch I use for edge stitching my napkins took the B foot instead of the A foot.  I always use the foot the machine tells me to but never actually knew the reason behind the A/B differences.  The rest of the feet are more obvious.

Now I'll have to go sample and check out the difference in what it looks like.

I would have done the same with the buttons @b15erk
But how much circumference is there?  Could it be some people have larger feet that wouldn't go through otherwise?  I made some pants that were that way.  I have to arch my foot straight down rather carefully to get it through.

The Haberdashery / Re: I Hate My Iron

That page isn't showing in this country.   :(  I had a good look at Rowenta irons, because it's a make I like, but didn't find anything over here.

Geo blocking really annoys me @Acorn.

Maybe one of these is accessible:

When I was looking I was trying to find a high wattage iron as some of them don't get hot enough to deal with my beloved linen.
