Sewing Machines / Re: Lidl
« on: December 26, 2018, 18:57:31 PM »
Congratulations! You should love that serger/overlocker. It's the newer model of what I have. Mine is only 3-4 thread stitches. I've been using it for, gosh, 12 -14 years. Only problems have been operator error, like not seating the thread properly in the tension disk and a couple of years when I put the foot pedal in a different cupboard panic cleaning one day and took forever to find it. Doh!

That price is almost identical to what it sells for here. If I were buying a pricier machine, over 500 USD or 400 GBP, I might go to a dealer to try out and purchase. But if you're good at learning from a manual and confident in your abilities it's less important on the mid range and introductory machines. When I bought my Brother sewing /embroidery machine I went to the dealer and they really pressured me to buy that day. The machine was identical to the Big Box version except with Disney designs built in, for $400 more.  :S I went home to think about it and the next week got an e-mail about new markdowns for their going out of business sale that started the day after I was in there. All the extra stuff they hyped, like free cleaning and lessons wasn't going to happen and they knew it. Really soured me on the advantages of buying from a dealer. BTW they had been in business for at least 15 years so not a fly by night at all.

Dolls and Toys / Re: In The Doll's Wardrobe

Please share. Seeing completed wardrobes just might shame inspire me into getting one made. My doll so at least no little child going without.

@BayCreekGal you can use the thrifted garments as long as you’ve had them in your possession for at least 6 months. After all, this is what you stash...

Whoopee! Does an imaginary triple back flip. Opens up a few more possibilities. Thank you Manuela.

The Show Must Go On / Re: What to make for my "broken" dancer
« on: December 18, 2018, 21:06:19 PM »
Bless her heart. How awful for a young woman to go through that. Here's to a speedy recovery for both of the girls.

I think bedroom accessories sound good, including maybe a bed jacket in case she is spending time propped up in there resting.

Actually, I think those garments you listed might still be a good idea. She is supposed to exercise, right? Not needing to wear garments already associated with dance might be good for morale. Maybe just the shorts, pant and tops, skip the leotard for mow. Just some nice exercise clothing.

The healing will take time. It'll be 2 years Christmas Eve that I hit my head with no loss of consciousness. Cat related incident with me coming up under a shelf-thought I was clearing it. Even such a minor concussion caused several months of problems with continual neck pain. Are they treating the neck compression with any physical therapy? That's what's finally given me relief. Saw him yesterday in fact. He does mild neck traction and stretching on me and it's been a huge help. I was having balance and vision issues if I tilted my head back and that's mostly gone now. Worth consideration for the future during her recovery.

I wish you all the best with this.

@Francesca I do find they hang better with a wider hem, or a little weight in the hem. Not from my own sewing experience mind you. Last curtains I made were from a twin sheet and might not have even gotten hemmed. Thirty years ago. They got no sun and light use. I found the fabric in a box a couple of years ago and turned them into pillow slips, which turned into my favorite pair. Go figure.

I would prefer not to have a theme but for each TSPer to make a block that represents them, so you, @Renegade Sewist , making a Hallowe'en block would be great because we know you have made lots of wonderful Hallowe'en quilts.  Applique would be good, but paper piecing has been a separate BOM.

Sounds like an excellent "theme".  :D Good news about the paper piecing, as I loathe doing it. Results are lovely but the process, eeww.

That sounds like a great idea @Pearl  ....

Maybe we should register our interest in this thread for doing one ... hopefully 12 of us will step forward ...???

OK. Should we do this with some sort of a theme, so we have blocks that would work together in a quilt if so desired? Will it be strictly P & Q, or include applique and/or paper piecing (shudder)?

My machine embroidery group did monthly exchanges and as a theme that wasn't too restricted each month had as theme something seasonally related to the theme. Examples August was late Summer, September was school related (back to school here), October was Hallowe'en, etc. Just a thought for starters.

I'm thinking I could do October. Yes, Hallowe'en. No one should be surprised, assuming we pick a concept that Hallowe'en would work for. If not, it gives me time to invent an idea, test it, try to make a tutorial-hahahahaha- and get it online-double haha.

I'll try to take a look at what you've done in the past to inspire me.

...and pieced as well!!!! I forget; am I a member of that group?

I should be joining in as well. The main idea I'm considering for Stash Busting fits here as well and there are a couple of other things under consideration.

I know I couldn't do much for a bedspread on my machine. The Brother SE-400 is a lovely machine to work with BUT it's more of a 3/4 size machine so not much throat space. It was a challenge doing simple quilting on a throw not quite twin sized. I've got two larger quilts basted but I'm pretty sure I'm going to need to clean up an older Singer I've got and use it.

The Haberdashery / Re: Wooden Pressing Tools

Link for the videos. If you look up "strip stick" or "seam stick" you'll see two other variants. You can easily make your own using 1/2 round hardwood molding 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches diameter. Hardwood resists the grain being raised from the steam, warping and doesn't release sap onto your projects like pine or fir might do. Quilters use them too. Some have a little padded muslin cover.

Ah, the subtle difference between stash busting and scrap busting.  :D More commonly you see the Darkside denizens  talk about scrap busting, as Q & P as well as applique lend themselves to saving every little scrap -search confetti quilts to see what I mean.

Most Sewists I know have vast yardage stockpiled for whenever in the future they get to that project. See a good sale, buy. See another one, buy more. And on it goes. No matter if you (me) only sew three or four items in a year. We must be prepared in case inspiration strikes.  :toast:

Actually, if I get the main project done I have a secondary project in mind that will use up any and all scraps from the first one.  >:)

edited to adjust spelling.
