Patterns Discussion / Fashion Design Software
« on: September 28, 2023, 02:36:40 AM »
This article highlights some of the main Fashion Design software packages around.
Some offer 2 and 3D modelling and some also include pattern generation modules.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cadcrowd.com/blog/what-is-the-best-clothing-design-software-for-3d-rendering-modeling-apparel/amp/

The packages I've heard most about recently for pattern making/pattern generation are Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, CLo3D and TailorNova.
CLo3D and TailorNova use a subscription business model.

Now these programmes in themselves are intended as tools for the fashion industry and patternmakers.  As tools what can be done with them to illustrate a design and produce a 3D model is amazing.
They're not substitutes for a lack of pattern making skills and education.

However increasingly, there are reports appearing about  some so called 'independent designers' using these types of programmes to produce sewing patterns for sale that turn out to be untested and downright 'bad' or wrong as in poorly drafted.  Copying someone else's design, generating a pattern and then selling on Etsy or another platform can be done easily now by unscrupulous sellers but, without an understanding of patternmaking, sewing know how or actual testing,  errors become more common.  Errors are compounded when these people copy already bad copies of patterns.
The copyright infringement and ethical issues are a different aspect this growing problem.

Perhaps best to support only the independent designers who encourage their customers to let them know about any issues or glitches they have with the designer's patterns.

Two sides of the digital pattern making coin.

Today's activities
Assemble shell top
Cut & sew PJ bottoms
Cut out sweatshirt

Oh I would have loved to go to this  :boohoo:
Sadly it will not happen so I will just carry on looking at stuff on the internet and hoping that one day I will be able to do something more than an hour away from home!
Frustrating isn't it

They offer Live virtual tours with commentary via zoom for this event.  Tickets for the Lives are here.

Not quite the same as attending in person but maybe better than not at all.

Coat is just about finished . . . Buttons I like are £1 each and i need 5, that nearly as much as the coat fabric cost.
I get it - although I've made some things because of the buttons - like the carved buttons on this unlined coat. https://pin.it/wyTWtTx
The ridged ponte fabric at £2 per metre was very inexpensive.  Wore the coat until it was past shabby and now the harvested buttons are waiting to become their next project.

its a tricky one isn't it.

Perhaps what you could do is pin the pattern pieces on for the top and skirt and if there's enough for both, cut out the top, but put the rest of the fabric away with a note of which skirt pattern you planned to use.  . . .

. . . For those smaller pieces which are left I like to make garments which combine fabrics, for instance a jersey back and silk front tee, shirts with contrast collars and cuffs or sometimes use them for nice bags/zipper pouches etc.
👏👏  Yes, well said.

Goodness -  so much going on.
I enjoyed reading this thread and once again say how much I admire the persistence and patience you all have to finish these projects.

I can do P&Q and thankfully have recognised that for me it must be small projects only and hold some interest or purpose.  Tends to be one or two items every three years or so - eg. Scrap busting washable doormats or the In the Hoop embroidery play mats for new babies arriving in the framily.

No darkside projects on the go, although from time to time I flirt with the idea of making one of those very striking tuffets or a morrocan pouffe.   Then I think of all that repetition and get over myself.

Just picked up on this -
yes it was about places available due to late cancelations on the last 2 courses taught by Michelle Pye at English Couture in Syston.
The dates have  passed and Michelle has now retired  although the online shop is open for 1 more week.

40
The full title of the book I mentioned by Michelle Pye is Ladies Couture Tailoring - a step by step practical guide to making a jacket that fits,  Cost is £20 plus P&P.  It is  a hard back as well and full of lots of clear photos on the various processes.

The book is very good and straight forward to follow.  Some of the photos are with dark fabric but the explanations and information are useful.
I like the practical no fussy bits needed approach.
Anyone who attended  Michelle's jacket tailoring course will find it very useful to re-familiarise yourself with the steps and techniques plus a few extra bits and pieces.

English Couture Company Online shop
Apparently the website is open for 1 more week before closing forever and there is a fabric sale.
Last chance to get your interfacings and other bits and pieces  including bra making supplies - lace , elastics, channelling,

What to wear -
- I know which silhouettes/lines I like to wear with with my bodyshape
- I wear tops + trousers more than anything else
- avoid loose, billowy, oversized or shapeless styles because I am short and they overwhelm my proportions
- I know which colours work well for me & why and also my favourites.
- I know which fabrics I prefer, types, texture and pattern  (no chunky for me and no ditsy florals)

Ideas about which items to make come from all over -
- Pinterest for interesting details to incorporate into a  version of a TNT pattern.
- trawling internet sites when looking for different examples of something.
-  Some blogs, a couple of You Tube channels & Pattern Review sometimes.  Often what I see about a pattern or a garment on a real body will make me step back from buying or using it.
- discussions with my sewing friends gives me ideas too.
- now and again, my imagination.

Patterns - mostly for a long time I drafted my own and still do for skirts always.
Lately I've drifted into trying and testing different ready made patterns, but of course those I keep tend to be altered and adapted.

1.  Knit Tops - if not my own Tshirt/knit top  pattern then my personal fit &  adapted version of the  Ellie & Mac Cuddle Tunic.
https://www.ellieandmac.com/products/adult-cuddle-tunic-dress-pattern

1.  Woven Tops - on the basis of most often repeated- it's probably my adapted version of Newlook 6107
https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/52525

2.  Bottoms Woven - Trouser/Pants pattern self-drafted for stretch woven fabrics.

2.  Bottoms knit - Leggings pattern self drafted from a Sewhere.com class I tried https://sewhere.com/purchase-made-measure-leggings-class/

3.  Dress - my versions of either Newlook 6013 or Simplicity 2247
https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/42657
https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/44542

4.  Jacket/Cardigan - zip up knit jackets/gilets from Newlook 6251 or Burda 6486

5.  Wildcard - my self drafted bra pattern.

. . .  using McCalls 6901  . . .   Lovely bright red corduroy.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Oh yes.
Red is my favourite colour and I love your contrast choice.   Mind you if course I would, I have a 'thing' about linings and trims.

And a heads up about McCalls 1901   now reissued as butterick 6845.
I like the option to remove the pockets, sometimes I just fake them.
https://jaycotts.co.uk/products/sewing-pattern-butterick-6845
I may try these as a change from my stretch wovens pattern.

Looking forward to seeing your red trousers.
