Tech Know How / My messages have gone all funny.
« on: August 16, 2018, 11:15:23 AM »
Just what I said up there really.
Until a couple of days ago when I hit the 'My Messages' button all of them came up in a list. Now only one or two appear and I can't seem to find the ones from a while ago. I need them. People send me little big pearls of wisdom and I need to refer back to them. Have the display settings changed or is there a button I now need to push?
At the bottom of the page it says I have 5 pages of inbox but I can't select previous pages there either.  :[

In the wardrobe / FBA again.
« on: August 08, 2018, 18:54:06 PM »
My head's pickled.
I have just followed this Craftsy tute and it doesn't look like the pictures.  :(
For a start the difference between my high bust measurement and my full bust measurement is 10" and my bust apex is 2" lower than the one on the pattern so I'm going to struggle anyway.
I followed all the steps, despite having my apex inside the waist dart (sweet Lord!!!!), but when it came to step 7 I ground to a halt. I cut across from the side seam to somewhere (new bust point???) but this all happened well outside the parameters of the original side dart. Step 7 says "measure the widest point of the cut you made (1&5/8") and use that to decide where the lower dart leg goes". What relevance is that measurement and where do I measure 1&5/8 from? I'm sick of this already...wanders off to find the 'giving up scundered' thread.  :(

ETA The line number 3 they show as up at the top of the dart. Mine is below the bottom of it because of the shift in apex.

Patterns Discussion / Cardigan/jacket pattern.
« on: July 13, 2018, 10:25:05 AM »
I live in a fleece.
The fleece is an antique and needs to go!!!
Can anyone suggest a pattern for a fleece stylee cardigan with no collar, no shaping, possibly even no fastenings; just two sleeves, one back and two halfa fronts please?

Fun with Fabric / Wash or dry clean?
« on: July 02, 2018, 15:33:12 PM »
A couple of years ago I went mad and bought ready mades for my sunroom. I hate ready mades but I needed too many so hey ho...I have them now. Seven pairs of 90x90in to be precise (about an acre). The outer is 100% polyester and so is the lining  :x
Here is the rub. They say dry clean only. (Are they really? What's the worst that could happen if I put them in for a few minutes at 20 degrees just to freshen 'em up a wee bit??? Hmmmh?  :ninja:)

Technical Help / Inventing an FBA
« on: June 14, 2018, 15:09:50 PM »
Any insomniacs interested parties reading my 'sewing' diary will know that today's the day I'm not going to make a dress. I'm going to make a top half and a bottom half! (maybe)
The pattern here is a batwing stylee thing to facilitate my ginormous knockers but should I add a little bit of length to the front as well? I'm making view B and am a JJcup size so well beyond an FBA. There is no "lengthen here" line and no bust darts but should I cut it a tiny bit longer so that the front can go out and in again without flattening me? I'll need to take up the extra somewhere to match the back piece but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Technical Help / Blind hemming.
« on: May 30, 2018, 12:58:05 PM »
I have to hand stitch a band to a bathrobe and it's a mile long so I thought I'd learn how to blind hem! It looks easy.
I put on my blind hemming foot and set to with some scraps.
First go...perfect! Unfortunately it was all down hill from there. There seems to be a problem with tension somewhere and eventually after several goes the bobbin gave up the ghost altogether.
I tried adjusting the stitch width and had a little play and I seem to have upset it somehow.
I put everything back to how it was at the start and it's still acting the a**e on blind hemming but when I put on my 1/4 " foot and sewed a straight seam it was all perfect!
One thing I should add is that I'm using a cone for my top thread. It's not on the spool holder on the machine but in a cup and threaded up through a safety pin. This had also been working perfectly well until now.
What am I missing?
I'm going to handstitch the robe as my thread isn't a close enough colour and I don't want to make a mess but I have curtains waiting to hem and I really want to use my blind hemmer.

In the wardrobe / Lining
« on: May 29, 2018, 09:02:20 AM »
I have purchased some outrageous fabric for floor sweeper summer skirts and it's a little bit see through so I shall have to line it.
My question is...Do I put in a little modesty half lining or should I do a full length job? My reason for not automatically doing full length is that I'm a 'sweaty betty'  :x and would like to try to stay cool.
If it helps...if I was 30 years younger either the skirt or the lining or both would be up to my bahooky! The lining will not be for my modesty but for others' delicate sensibilities!  0_0

Festival at Nantes
I was sent this linky by a friend who attended the festival last week. Some of the work is mind blowing.
A word of advice...I kept getting lost in the matrix that is Photobucket but there are three pages so make sure you see them all including the coat and the Big Village!!!  :o

House Beautiful / How much!?!?!?!
« on: April 18, 2018, 13:32:28 PM »
Whilst sitting having lunch I was noodling about looking at fabric...as you do.
I found some quite nice stuff which would do in the bathroom for the cheapo price of £12.35pm on special offer. For a laugh ahahaha I put in my details on their curtain maker calculator and came up with.....

Width 1500mm x Drop 1400mm

.....£236.27.

Why? Just why???

In the wardrobe / I don't make clothes but.....
« on: April 13, 2018, 10:15:34 AM »
As some of you may know some of this is winging it's way to me courtesy of the lovely Fran.
http://fabric]
I'm hoping to make it up as http://trousers]
How, in the VERY simplest of terms, do I even start to match the pattern?  :o

I did try to do short links but it doesn't seem to have worked. :-(
FFS the links haven't worked either!!!!
Anyway great big geometric pattern. How do I do it??

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Quilting thread
« on: August 25, 2017, 17:05:37 PM »
A couple of months ago I read a thread recommending multi-coloured quilting thread on cones and now I can't find it. Quelle surprise!
Unfortunately if you type "quilting thread" into the search box it brings up most of the forum.
If the people who wrote on it or if anyone can remember the recommendations on it please let me know. I don't feel like paying £10 per 1000m if I can get a better deal elsewhere.
Thanks.

Vintage Machines / Vintage Singer buttonholer

Hi guys, I fond this whilst browsing fabric...again...and I've read how you all love your buttonholers so I thought I'd flag it up.
Feel free to move it if it should be in accessories or somewhere else.

2mins later...still browsing.
It seems the same seller has other vintage parts too. Just sayin'. ;-)

In the wardrobe / Help help! Sleevies!!!!
« on: August 08, 2017, 09:28:50 AM »
I've bought a man's shirt because it was so beautiful and in the sale. It has lots of little details including on the inside of the cuff.
Here's what I want...
The sleevies are too long and I want to make them 3/4 length "turned up" but I still want the nice fabric inside the cuff to show. How do I do this! If I turn them up enough times the inner cuff disappears in the folds. (you're all doing it aren't you???)
There will be no cutting I don't do dressmaking (sleevie making) so would it be possible to teeny weeny hand sew the layers together leaving my nice fabric on t'outside or is there a better way?
Thanks.
