Fun with Fabric / Do you wash fabric?
« on: January 06, 2019, 13:30:45 PM »
I did do a search as I thought this had been discussed before, but without success (not saying it isn't there I just couldn't find it).

So, please

Do you wash garment fabric?
All fabrics?
Which fabrics?

Patterns Discussion / Fit Models and Pattern Makers
« on: September 12, 2018, 13:45:32 PM »
Boppingbeth referred to the different fit models used in her comments on Sewing Workshop and Patterns for Pirates patterns.

Either because I never thought about it or because I grew up in the time of the Big Pattern Companies I had never heard of Fit Models.

Now I am not sure if I will ever venture into the new companies (they certainly aren't aiming at my age group), but if anyone has a spare minute can you explain to this old bird how one finds out which model is used by which companies and what difference that would make?

Technical Help / Fitting Systems (Solo)
« on: May 30, 2018, 10:14:45 AM »
This was triggered by my getting emails about a new fitting book just published 'New Book = Temptation'

Plus finding a post I had printed off from TSF (oh dear, 2008  :| )
"choose just one, methodical fitting and pattern adjustment scheme that you can use to fit yourself, focus and stick with it."

So I hauled out fitting books from my shelves (I think I found them all)

Vogue Sewing Book of Fitting, Adjustments and Alterations
Sarah Veblen. The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting
Lynne Garner. A Perfect Fit (creating personalised patterns)
The Perfect Fit – A Practical Guide to Adjusting Patterns for a Professional Finish
Singer. Sewing Pants That Fit
Betty Foster’s Adapting to Fashion
Betty Foster – Creating Fashion
Palmer/Pletsch Jackets for Real People
Palmer/Pletsch Pants for Real People

Plus several Craftsy classes (one of which I have actually worked on - Pam Howard Jacket Fitting)

Help! I think I need an intervention  :o

Fun with Fabric / Quilted lining
« on: January 10, 2018, 18:20:26 PM »
Something like this could be good as lining for a coat like that raincoat DF has just finished

Well since it looks as if this might actually get finished (well the top pieced anyway) it should probably have its own thread rather than just being muttered about in the daily thread.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / FPP thread ends
« on: September 14, 2017, 11:14:29 AM »
Ladies, I am sure I read in one of my books (did I mention my craft book library?) that you don't need to tie off the thread ends when doing FPP as they get buried under the next piece.
Now I can't find the reference.

Is it right, please and do you just leave them?

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Rotary cutters

Ladies, could I ask how often you replace the blade in your rotary cutter?

Access All Accessories / Simplicity 2924 Baby bag
« on: July 26, 2017, 11:04:33 AM »
Simplicity 2924 – thanks Fabric Lover
Curtain cotton for the outer and patchwork cotton for the lining
I went with iron on interfacing Vilene H250 rather than anything padded – jury out on that till I finish it.

Right, after advice from Ohsewsimple and Jo,  walking foot attached, new (sharp) needle, sections of bag held together by clips – clips are great!

Access All Accessories / Sewing multiple layers
« on: July 25, 2017, 12:25:32 PM »
Simplicity 2924 baby bag.
Now I have done this kind of thing, but not for a few years and the memory isn't always that reliable.
Any advice from experienced bag makers welcomed definitely needed.

Thicker machine needle to cope with layers or would that risk making too big a hole in the fabric?
Will using a walking foot make moving the layers/keeping them together easier?

Any comments gratefully received.

Access All Accessories / Baby bag - interfacing?
« on: July 09, 2017, 19:16:10 PM »
Simplicity 2924
Fabric (curtain cotton) and lining (patchwork cotton) bought and pieces cut out.

The requirements list fusible interfacing, but not what weight of interfacing.

Any advice from experienced bag makers welcomed.

In the wardrobe / Shoulder pads - help/advice needed please
« on: June 15, 2017, 11:03:47 AM »
Prompted by comments in the Riding Habit thread I realised that I will need shoulder pads for my toile and then the actual jacket.

Are all shoulder pads equally good (in my case whatever JL has in stock tomorrow) or does quality vary, do people have preferences/on-line sources etc?
