Vintage Machines / My 99K
« on: June 09, 2017, 16:03:04 PM »
She dates to 1938 so a wedding present to my mother.
Not so much looked after as hardly used.
She is one heavy lump of metal  :o

Vintage Machines / Is this a reasonable price?
« on: June 07, 2017, 22:27:59 PM »
Now I do not need a treadle sewing machine, but

I have just seen a FB post about a Singer treadle (with sphinx decals) refurbished and working - price £120.

Would this be considered a reasonable price?

And Pam Howard’s Craftsy Jacket Fitting Techniques.

Now I have made clothes in the past (the far distant past – a bone-bodice evening dress back in the early 90s) and an attempt at trousers a few years ago when I found a local class, unfortunately I found it shortly before the tutor was planning to retire.

However this time I am harnessing the power of the internet to start from scratch and do things properly

So Pam Howard – start watching – Woa! What do you mean “change the pattern” ? Seriously? Cut up the pattern and add extra seams?  ><

What have I got myself into?

Sewing Spaces and Furniture / Multiple machines

I know several of you have and regularly use more than one machine -sewing machines/overlocker/coverstitch etc.
Do you have separate tables for them or do you just get a lot of weightlifting exercise getting them in and out of cupboards?

The Haberdashery / Pinking shears

Prompted by a comment on another thread.

I have never owned a pair of pinking shears, so, basic question, please - when do you need them and how useful are they?

The Haberdashery / Scissors
« on: April 20, 2017, 12:33:34 PM »
DF was praising her Ernest Wright shears on another thread, which set me thinking about scissors.

I use Fiskars softgrip because I find metal handles uncomfortable.
However, I do have a pair of George Butler 7 1/2" shears (almost certainly my grandmothers) still sharp, but a bit discoloured (worth cleaning and servicing? if so, where?).

Correction a pair of cleaned shiny shears which still cut beautifully.

Any comments on scissors/shears welcome.

Hauled out patterns (which have been 'maturing' for (well, let's not bother about time), dither, pick what looks like a straightforward one https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/9839

I'm also working through the Craftsy class on Solo Fitting.

So, compared my measurements and pattern sizes. Oh, good, allowing for semi-fitted ease I can go for 14. Er, there are two front pieces as well as the back - marking seam allowance then measuring across pattern pieces to check the waist which I am sure is going to be smaller isn't as easy as she made it look.

Oh, and the waist is an inch lower than mine and there are two points above the waist to lengthen/shorten the pattern plus a waist dart that is just a jumble of lines.

Panic setting in.
Where is the bin?

Deep breath - Go for fabric toile or trace pattern on to that Swedish tracing paper I got and use it?

Hi, I'm new... / Hi from Sewingsue

Hi everyone and thank you for the email confirming my registration (I was one of those refreshing my inbox and wondering what had happened to my application)
I have registered on Stitchers Guild and they do seem a friendly bunch, but it is good to have a UK site.
