In the wardrobe / Re: What were your favorite makes in 2023?
« on: January 08, 2024, 07:52:24 AM »
@CCL It is the Sporty bag from Doll Tag Clothing.  It is for an 18" doll and measures 6.25" x 4.25"   x 2.5"
I wish I had waited to interface the fabric ( it's a bit floppy)  but I got inspired by some offcuts  of heavy curtaining that toned so well with the herringbone tape.  It is actually an off white background, not that dark cream it shows in the picture.

My favourite sew for last year was the doll's sports bag, just for fun.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I don't think I sewed anything new, just a lot of repairs, alterations  and knitting.  Also curtains and a footstool recovered so not a lot of sewing there either.  Lost a lot of my sewing time to my student and I was very pleased with the way her blouse turned out. She also made two bags, designed from scratch, (by me) one with a waterproof lining and one with custom pockets for her daughter.  Those worked well too.
Have to make this year I get something done for me, I think.

A Good Yarn / Re: AUTUMN SOCK KNIT ALONG. 2023 New

@Ohsewsimple  if you give us the desired width of the legs and the feet, we can probably do the calculations for you.  High instep should not be a problem because hand knitted socks stretch more than bought ones. The circumference of the foot is the same, just in a different place.

my sewing is not so exciting.  I shortened an irritating too long duvet cover.  No more empty cover round my neck tonight!   I have to replace the tops of some leather settee cushions with a rather nice tweed.  Now I am thinking. how to cut the cloth for some side cushions, all tweed. No sewing done on them but I have thunk - how to match the large check pattern?  i know how much was paid for this stuff - must not waste it!

It was @Ann 's fault I fell into 18" doll sewing!   The clothes she made for hers were so beautiful I went and bought a second hand doll just to sew for.  (Then I saw another offered and... But we won' t go into that)
Some of those 'realistic ' clothes are quite tight.  I have a bit of a tussle with some of them.  A small child would really struggle.
A neighbours girl got an 18" doll and I started making items for her when I made mine.  The thing she really loved was dungarees. Bright pink.

I find the OG dolls are a little different to the American Girl ones and some of their patterns are quite tight on them.  Pixiefaire.com have patterns for AG dolls  and some free patterns.  I would make the width slightly more. The height is right.  McCalls do several 18" doll pattern sets.  They are less complicated than the pixiefaire ones which aim to be more like real clothing.

I had a rather pretty summer dress in a Rose and Hubble print that only sat for a couple of years. One or two of the pins had rusted in and I couldn't get the marks out.

Good point.  I hadn't thought of that.  I expect I would soon have found out!  Bias binding then.

Found this on a RTW.

1/2" tape is overlocked in with the body and edging, then turned over to cover the overlocked seam.   Might look nice with a pretty ribbon instead.

Try the pattern pieces against one another.  If the neckline are the same, then you can use the other collar.  If not, then redraw the vest pieces with the jacket neckline.

Did it go wiggly after the pressing? If so, what is the thread made of?  Some fibres shrink under too hot an  iron.
(my student was pressing her collar ready to turn it right side out and shrunk some of the polycotton - so we made that the inside because there was no more fabric, but she is thrilled with the finished article)

Repaired inside OH's coat pocket. Then cut out 4 fronts (B, C, D, DD) cups (I think we know she isn't less than 'average')  and a back, from a fitting pattern.  Sewed in the darts tonight. Tomorrow  I will show my student how she differs from the B fitting and what alterations she will always have to make
