A Good Yarn / Re: What type of knitting needles to buy?
« on: January 19, 2023, 14:09:07 PM »
Buy?  Buy???

I have complete sets of imperial and metric straight needles and an extensive collection of cable and circular needles, all of which are stored in a 1940's pleather knitting bag (which shows no sign of deterioration) inherited from my maternal grandmother.  I was passed some of the needles by my mother & aunt (both still alive but neither now knitting) and inherited the remainder from MiL and MiL's mother.  The only ones I recall actually buying are 4.5 mm circular and double-pointed wooden needles for a specific project.  I make do....

Maybe you need a dehumidifier for this time of year?  DS is living in student halls atm and he's using a disposable one as available from poundshops/Wilko because the bay window in his room gets manky in the same way.

I use ballpoint needles for stretch/jersey but sharps for wovens.  Mine is a late-90's Singer and when I bought it from the lamented emporium of Robert Theobold, that's what he advised and it works for me.  He also gave me a healthy stock of needles, the sweetie!

@Missie   Quite so - since DS was born the rule has been, if it's not machine washable it doesn't get bought.  Some of my 'funeral wear' is older than DS, though!

And if you have an afternoon to explore, I recommend

A Walk Around the Snickelways of York by Mark W Jones

It's a bit old (the first edition came out in the 1980's) and the author died four years ago so it's unlikely to be updated, but given that York within the walls doesn't change that much, I don't think that matters.

Addendum - found his obit and it seems his family intend to keep it up to date

I had rails of power suits in the 90's, almost none of which fitted after DS was born (not so much weight gain as permanent shape change!).  Then in the noughties the dress code in IT became much more smart-casual and the power suits went.  Before long the trouser suits will go because I really don't wear them and, besides, most of them are dry clean only and who's got the time for that nowadays?  So, I will be left with two skirt suits suitable for funerals.

Clear them out.  I know you will feel slightly guilty given the money/time you spent on them originally, but if they're no use to you let them be given a second life with someone entering the job market who will appreciate them.

@HenriettaMaria  ... Is your GS pretending to be a Pet Shop Boy in the last pic ???

He's my son (although in fairness I should point out that I was older when I had him than my own grandfather was when I was born - he started young and I was drinking at the last-chance saloon - so an easy mistake to make!!) and the cloak is intended to be Emperor Palpatine (Star Wars baddie), for use in Freshers' week fancy dress when worn with a hideous rubber EP mask.

The strange pinky-coloured outfit with the cap was in reality more brownish and he was being a terracotta warrior - hence the copious use of bronzer on his face.

Can't comment on fabric shops - I haven't lived in Yorkshire for years - but Duttons for Buttons have shops in both York and Harrogate so you definitely need to go there for your trimmings!

Don't forget that both York and Harrogate have branches of Betty's tearooms.  Their Fat Rascal buns are to die for  :P

Hello from someone else who's never, in 45 years of sewing, fitted an invisible zip.  Never likely to now - I live in trousers nowadays!

@Bumblebuncher In my experience the fact that boys only want to live in jeans doesn't seem to make much difference while they're at primary school.  When he was that age DS seemed to have a regular need for costumes for special assemblies, Children in Need, Xmas shows, themed days (Tudors, Victorians, WWII), World Book Days....  The list goes on.  If your DDs/DiLs find you have the skills, you could find yourself knocking stuff out at short notice for years!

Years ago I bought a 'daylight' lamp with a magnifier.  It was like an anglepoise but slotted onto a wheeled stand.  I never got on with it and the lamp bit was jettisoned but the wheeled stand moved to garage.  About five or six years ago I found another anglepoise that clamped to a shelf.  The lamp itself slotted into a socket on the clamp.  I thought, hmmm - I wonder if this will work with the wheeled stand?  Had a go, and it did, so I have a lamp that can either be on the shelf over my sewing table or over my shoulder in the lounge if I'm hand sewing.  I can't remember what the original lamp and base cost (it was maybe 15 years ago I bought it at a sewing expo) but the later purchase wasn't much more than £35.

It was this kind of thing with a screw-in daylight bulb on a stand like this

Another tip on dreaming up passwords is to use, eg, a memorable poem or quote to help you remember.  So, to use a random example, take the first letters of the words in:

Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York

That becomes :

nitwoodmgsbtsoy

Switch in some capital letters and top-row characters and you get

n!Tw0OdmG$bT5oY

Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hello, I am new
« on: January 11, 2023, 11:42:33 AM »
Good morning, Baltimore!  Hello from another stash-buster on a fit quest.  I've sworn not to buy any more new clothes until the stash is down to manageable levels.  However, it's too cold here to be stripping off every ten minutes to do another check of fit so for the next few weeks I'm making a bunch of these - or at least my take on them - for the supermarket run.

Sewing Machines / Re: Fancy sewing machine thoughts
« on: January 10, 2023, 20:59:24 PM »
I have a late 90's computerised machine and a late 70's swing needle.  The older machine does brilliant straight stitch and both the spool and the bobbin thread sides are first class.  The newer machine doesn't come close - the bobbin thread always looks a bit sinusoidal regardless of the spool thread tension setting (but I maybe need to get someone to adjust something).

However, the newer machine does several really useful things the older machine doesn't do, specifically stretch (multi-stitch) zig zag, several variations on one-step buttonholes and has a seven-step incremental needle drop position setting that's really handy when doing tricky edge stitching.

I also have a five-thread overlocker that can convert to cover stitch (although that's a bit of a faff to be switching back and forth from frequently).  I don't covet any more machines, nor do I have space to store any more!

Wow, the Sewezi is BIG You would need a big space in your home to use it.

That's what I thought - I'm going to have to stick to the dining room table for the foreseeable!
