@Sandra I don't know how he looks in the flesh but the skunk's facial features don't stand out on a screen.  Perhaps they could be made a stronger feature especially the eyes.

That was part of the problem using dark fabric and using black for the eyes.
I wondered whether to try to put a glint in the eyes to see if it would make them stand out more but I'll leave it as it is for now and see what other characters I'll be making. It's early days yet.

They're brilliant.  What is it about the skunk that you're not happy with?  @Sandra

It doesn't look too bad does it?

I don't have much dark/black fabric with a bit of texture and I think I over thought how I was going to do it. I went through my stash several times to look for something which was just right.
After finding the multi fabrics to use on the cockatiel it seemed a bit of a let down only needing two different colours for the skunk.
And black and white are a bit  :\ It seemed a bit flat in comparison.

I'm looking forward to what I'll get next month.  :)

With (too much?  -< ) spare time on my hands, I've signed up to a Block of the Month club called Funny Faces, from Shiny Happy World. I think it cost £3.05 and I don't think that's too bad per month. I can manage spending that.

I keep seeing a few of these brightly coloured quilts on Pinterest and I like them, especially the Monsters one.
Aimed at children mainly but who's to say when you're too old to enjoy brightly coloured daft things.  ;)

They're really simple raw edge appliqué...(OMG, I've just done my first ééé!  Thank you to whoever told us about that little trick.)

I've got heaps of fabric which ought to be perfect for this sort of thing. Made a start yesterday on a cockatiel.
Really happy with this one.  :)

I'm going to lay them out in a 'Polaroid' frame-type layout, that's why it's wonky. I don't have the background fabric yet for outside of the frame area.
The block itself is 10 inch finished size but with my polaroid frame setting it's going to be 17 inches finished.

They'll release a new face on the first of the month, and I was still just in time to access last months skunk, so I've done that one this morning.
Not quite so happy with this one. Toyed with the idea of using some red and white fabrics but felt the 'skunk' was going to be lost without the identifying black and white colours. There were some samples shown in pretty colours but they looked (to me anyway) like teddy bear faces with squirrel tails.  ><

I think, (but maybe I'll change my mind as I go along), I'm going to try to be believable and realistic with the colours used, where I can. If there are any monster faces I'll be able to do as I please.  0_0

I'll try to remember to show you the other ones as and when they're released.  :)

Slept really well last night.  :thumb:
No frost this morning so the temp's up a bit on the last few days. It's cloudy but the sun's almost shining.

 to @Diane It's a gloomy time of the year and you've had a lot going on. Hope your spirits can lift soon and you don't feel so low.

I don't know if I can be bothered to go for a walk up to the supermarket. Son's not here so I can't ask him to take me.
 I don't think I can be bothered but I don't know what to have for dinner.

@Sandra maybe you could come to some kind of arrangement with the menswear shop about using the space but also be able to your own work there as well? Just a thought.

Yeah.....I've thought the same thing.
A few years ago he told me that he would retire at 60, which is very soon. However, in the last couple of months he told me that he isn't going to retire at 60. He's going to carry on a bit longer until he's had enough.

I ought to be able to work in the spare bedroom in the new place whenever that happens. As long as there's some work for me to do.  :S

Nothing again today from the menswear but I've had a call from somewhere else and they're dropping a couple of items off to me on Monday morning.

I probably just need to get a real job.

Would it be worth advertising your professional dressmaking and alterations services to a wider audience? Do you have a Facebook page for your town for small businesses to advertise on or something similar.

You could increase your normal prices so the menswear shop and dry cleaners still get a discount and I’m sure you’d still get takers.

@WildAtlanticWay and @Bjay  A huge bugbear of mine is people coming to the house. They often don't treat it as my home and think they can drop in whenever, or not at all if they've changed their mind after arranging to come here.
Lots of people call in after they've finished work so I'm waiting for them to arrive before I start something to eat...then they arrive much later than expected because they went home first to have their dinner.

I'm trying to put a stop to that nonsense and hope that when I move I'll change my phone number so that some people won't be able to find me any more.  :ninja:
Also, when I move I'll lose my sewing space in the extension and I don't want people trudging upstairs to the spare bedroom (where I think I'm going to be working.)

The menswear shop man sort of mentioned that he used to have a sewing lady working upstairs in his shop at one time. I don't know if that was an offer or if he was thinking out loud.
If I did that though, I'd 'belong' to the menswear shop and I like doing my own thing.

I need a proper job don't I?  -<

@Bumblebuncher  Yes. Things are okay between myself and Gertie.  :) We'd never fallen out but she's still a bit cross with me and she's being heavily influenced by whatever her Dad's saying to her.

Another very frosty start to the day. Slept a bit better last night and I'm still clinging on to wellness.  :thumb:
The sore throat has just about gone, I still have a bit of a headache but I don't (yet?) have a cold.

Gertie asked me if I'd fancy meeting her in town today but she said that there's a home football match so we've cancelled.
She lives quite close to the football ground and doesn't want to risk having to walk through the crowds.

No work on the rail today. It's always been a dead time of the year for alterations but I can't help but feel worried.
Self employed so no work = no income.

They remind me of zip end thingies so if you shorten a zip you bend these over to stop the zip running off the top...?

Gertie's just been on the phone to ask advice about shortening her new top. She'd set up her little pink sewing machine (which she had for her 7th birthday) and was just checking a few things with me before getting started.  0_0

It's mesh fabric and it needs a lot cutting off  :S so I told her to test the machine first on what will be chopped off to make sure the machine's happy to stitch that particular fabric...and to stretch it out slightly as she stitches so the stitches won't break when she comes to wear it.
She said it looked okay so I've left her to get on with it.  :thumb:

She's asked me if I'd want to meet up with her tomorrow. I've still got an uncomfortably sore throat so I said I'll see how I feel.

As it is now, it's 54 inches long x 42 inches wide @Sara-S  I don't think it'll be much larger than that when I've finished with it.

I imagined I'd have liked a 2 inch wide border around it in the blue and white check but after roughly pinning a strip round the sides, I don't think I like it so might just put a narrow binding round instead.  :)

Having very little actual work to do, I've managed to get the top put together.

It's nothing special. I wanted to make do with what I'd got and not spend even more money on even more fabric.
The main thing though is that it's FLAT!  :meditate:

The backing and the binding will be the blue and white check.
I've got no wadding so it's going to have to wait in the quilt queue with all the others.  0_0

@Sandra Just noticed you're in Bilston. We used to live up the road in Coseley. ☺️

Almost bought a house with my ex boyfriend which was very close to Coseley railway station, then when that one didn't work out we looked at another one in Roseville.
Then we split up.  0_0

Mornin' Missie. I was just going to start the today thread and you've beaten me to it.  :)

The sky is clear and there's another very heavy frost this morning. I've slept badly again and noticed it was quite misty when I peered through the curtains at about 4 o'clock.

I feel a little bit unwell. I have a headache and the beginnings of a sore throat.  -< I'm hoping it won't turn into anything nasty.

Gertie phoned yesterday feeling very pleased with herself. She's got a job.  :thumb: She'll start in a couple of weeks time. It'll be good for her to earn her own money.

Dry Cleaner's been with one job (again). It's a pair of trousers to restitch the side seam by the pocket. He said he's got another couple of jobs to collect from somewhere else so he might call again later.

@Bumblebuncher  Regarding The Phantom Thread.
I think it's mentioned on the Television and Radio thread on the forum somewhere. It's a bit odd. I watched it and wondered why I'd bothered.

Good luck.

I'm awake early this morning. Stirred to get comfy and suddenly remembered what my ex said to me yesterday. No chance of getting back to sleep.

It's frosty again today. I think we have a few days of dry but chilly weather. I prefer it to day after day of grey and damp gloom. It makes a nice change.

I've got no work again. Menswear said he was very quiet so he brought me nothing yesterday.

My Dad might be visiting today instead of tomorrow because he has an appointment to attend in the morning. Hope it's not icy underfoot.
