Im sure Ive posted about this project somewhere before but I'll be damned if I can find it so here we go again!
Last year, after being informed by Nasa that my Oakshott stash could now be seen from space I decided to actually DO something with all those luscious fabrics instead of just stroking them ..... my precious

So I set to sometime last autumn and these have been pinned on the design wall quilt in the dining room ever since, soon being overlaid with the temperature quilt in progress, cushion cover blocks, the *** for not Pearl (sorry) and various 2019 quilt blocks.

Well the other day I took them off the design wall quilt in the dining room, hied me hence to the sewing school and laid the strips out on their big tables, chose a layout, took them home and put them together!

Oh er missus its bloody eeeeenormous (as the actress said to the bishop, or was it the other way round?) and I have no idea how I am going to be able to layer it let alone quilt the monster .... but do we likey ????

Like? We love! Love the graduation of colour.
Doesn’t the sewing school have space for you to layer it? Or a local quilt shop? Or a local hall? Village, school, scout?
Looking forward to seeing the quilting (even if you're not making me a **** yet).
-
It's lovely, @Iminei
-
Yes indeedy ..... I have been offered their space and help from the lovely Ali ...
but I have never before layered such a beast so am understandably apprehensive about it!
I need extra wide backing fabric too so it will be sometime before we get onto this and I have another project to layer and quilt before this beast too! ;)
-
Such vision!
I really really don't know how you do it.
Absolutely stunning. :loveit:
Top tip. If you want to see your lay out set it all out in the garden and stand on the roof! 0_0 0_0
-
We do likey, velly, muchly.
I've not done anything that big and not done many anyway but when I use basting spray I find a rolling pin handy to get things stuck down nicely. Once stuck I'm inclined to use some safety pins round the edges (hark at me who has done all of 5 quilts).
-
I use 505 spray but for big quilts I too use pins around the edge.
It's lovely @Iminei and very on trend :)
-
@wrenkins I only steal other peeps ideas hon ... this was an adaptation of a quilt by
Lynne Goldsworthy (https://www.oakshottfabrics.com/products/50-shades-plus-grey-quilt-pack-n-pattern)
from Oakshott ... sorry to disabuse you of the idea of any genius ... but Oh what a lot of negative space to fill !!! :S
-
Fantastic :*
You've gradated the colours but at the same time introduced an element of asymmetry which keeps the eyes interested. It's one to be really proud of. 0_0
Is it all sewn together as one big top or is it still strips to QAYG?
-
But the negative space sets off the colours beautifully, and your supremely accurate piecing
Don't over quilt it, leave quite a lot of grey-glory <3
-
It is v gorge @Iminei why not make it into a dress? Just an idea
-
@BrendaP its complete and the sooner its layered (and the mess on the other side is hidden) the better!
But first I need some extra wide backing fabric ... I was thinking of a bit more of @LeilaMay 's fabric that she whizzed over to me, the stuff that was left over from your first quilt Leila, black, white and grey umbells ???
-
:ninja: Your's is nicer than hers...more interesting.
Just sayin'.
-
FAB U LOUS 0_0 0_0 0_0
-
Wow, wish I had your eye for colour.
-
@BrendaP its complete and the sooner its layered (and the mess on the other side is hidden) the better!
That's a big, and time consuming, job for Elvis :sew: even after you've sourced the backing fabric. :S
-
@BrendaP ... Elvis only comes out of his bodybag (nasty placky thing that it is) for labels, The Splurgess quilts.
-
Elvis only does labels?? :S
-
Ooh @Iminei - that's the second time recently that you've made me like grey. And I really don't like grey normally.
'Tis beautiful. 0_0
-
Beautiful. You have such s good eye for colour.
-
Well I really cant take any of the credit for the colours .. theyre Oakshott colours which are scintillating as they are woven not printed.
And I think nice Grey fabric is quite hard to find (over here ... the Americans seem to have loads)
Why I dont know or maybe its the English light? As opposed to ... well those blues that look so gorgeous when holidaying in the Greek islands look nothing like that back over here do they?
-

Were you wanting to know what it was?
Same as I told you before, from MIDSOMER - still the same price too which was the bit I think you didn't like LOL :)

Lovely and goes soooo well with your masterpiece but £18 a metre ...Ouch!
-
Yes LM, Ouch indeed ...
Funds are now running low chez Imi as I have now been nonearning for over a year ...
so I really must dig through the ridiculous amount of stash I have and see if I have anything remotely suitable.
Size will be the problem. :(
-
WOW! This was buried all the way at the bottom of page 6 !!! Am I really that lazy or are we just a lot of chatterboxes ??
Anyhoo ... BIG News ..... After the to-ing and fro- ing, humming and Haaing over the backing fabric, a few weeks ago when I was showing Pearl around Dorchesters premier Quilting Emporia I found THE perfect Backing fabric ... and it was extra wide!
Today I received a pic from my Longarmer ...

Now just to sort out an approriate Binding and soon I shall be snuggled under the 100 shades!

Your quilts always have such fabulous backings and bindings, @Iminei . Can't wait to see this when it's quilted. <3
-
Looking good. I wish I wasn't such a
pauper cheapskate and bought actual fabric for backing :| but I can't justify the cost to myself :|
-
Looking good. I wish I wasn't such a pauper cheapskate and bought actual fabric for backing :| but I can't justify the cost to myself :|
Think that might be my problem too, @Lowena . Also, it takes me so long to get to that stage that I'm fed up of the quilt by the time I have to think about backing and binding.
-
Yes,there's that too @Pearl It's the planning and piecing that's my favourite part
-
@Pearl but how lucky were we that day to find that fabric???
I had been looking for something suitable for most of the year !
Soooo much nicer than my original purchase ... but it wont be wasted!
-
Hopefully you will look at the back frequently :D
-
Wow, that's a spectacular piece of work, @Iminei . I too love the colour gradations and the whole optical illusion-ness of it.
-
It's gorgeous! I certainly wouldnt have wanted to quilt that on an ordinary machine, however big the harp space was!
-
Thank you for understanding, I think its about 80 x 90
Too big for me too cope with, however simple a design
-
I not only likey - I LOVEY - and I like yours better than the original - is that wrong? Yours is more interesting, just my opinion, mind.
Lx
-
That looks gorgeous @Iminei and the backing is stunning, such a good match with all the colours. <3
-
@Pearl we should set up as long-arm quilters. 8)
Look at the deliciousness that you get to work on and hang on your wall till the customer comes. Then the next lovelies come in. :loveit: We'd never have to back a quilt again! 0_0
Gorge @Iminei <3
-
Im picking it up today 0_0 :* 0_0 £££ But worth it!!!!
Then I'll be binding .... any ideas ????
-
The 100 shades is home !!!

So tomorrow I will be thinking of an appropriate binding .... there's something mulling away in my brain about another flange binding ... With the colours and the lighter grey ???
Or ??????
-
Wow!..... just, Wow <3 <3
-
Nice ... eh ???
Will be at FOQ next year :)
-
Well,I'll definitely be there to see it in the flesh. It's gorgeous @Iminei <3
-
@Iminei
That is a lovely quilt - really effective and love the colour combinations. <3

Well,I'll definitely be there to see it in the flesh.
:o You're coming to FOQ next year ???? :\
-
It is gorgeous! I love the colours you have used.
Lx
-
Yes, @Iminei , hopefully...... If that's ok :D
-
Ok Gang, I need some input here ...
Binding!
I need your opinions about bindings ....
ALBUM (https://photos.app.goo.gl/xMGXKFGkZF538MvD9)
Choices at the end of the album ... click on one pic and the i Icon to bring up description next to the image
Remember that there are blues, purples, mauve's and greens in the quilt as well as the yellows, oranges and reds, also that I would have to find some more Butterfly Ball (????) from fabric freedom (I think) Now identified as Timeless Treasures ..... Yes Lowena I only have 160" of it :P although I could perhaps intersperse it with plain grey ...
Have no idea how much I need, I think the quilt is 80" x 90" OK I thought I d show some willing an have measured it ... its approx 77" x 88" @Brenda
I will have to buy some more Grey -< sigh!
Alternatively other ideas, except piecing Oakshott scraps ... are more than welcome!
-
I like Option Five, the very last one.
-
I think I like 2.
-
I like 2 & 3. The colours stand out but also it is more geometric, like the quilt pattern.
-
Have no idea how much I need
Really? ><
77+77+88+88 =330, so say 350, divide by 42 makes 7.8, so 8 strips(wof) times your preferred width.
-
Option 5 does it for me
-
Don't forget that your 'Butterfly ball' came from the dregs of someone's ancient stash off ebay so may now be impossible to find. :o
I prefer option five as it's slightly wider and shows more of the colours. What is that fabric...I love it! :loveit:
The flange ones look a bit odd but I don't know why. 8)
-
Don't forget that your 'Butterfly ball' came from the dregs of someone's ancient stash off ebay so may now be impossible to find.
???? Really ... I know that I have bought it myself from the Local Emporia that (though it still is) is no more ...
Did I need some more and put a call out somewhen then Wrenken (see what I did then ??)
THAT fabulous fabric proves procrastination can be a virtue. I had some black with grey detail fabric bought for the 100 shades but sat on it for months ... then, this half term when VIP Pearl came to stay we headed to Paulines Patchwork (In Poundbury) and there it was this glorious 108" wide (Woo Hoo!!! no joins) Backing fabric, just waiting for me!
Radiance 108" Quilt Back by Colour Principle for Henry Glass
Is the information you need!
There was no hesitation ... 2 and a bit metres went straight into my basket!
-
Yes. You didn't quite have enough to finish a project and I just happened to be looking for butterfly fabric on ebay. 0_0
That Pauline doesn't have radiance on her website. :S
-
Give 'em a call @wrenkins ... they're very helpful and they have a huge amount of stock.
You have the name and number (ish) of the fabric its in the extra wides.
I have an alternative to the butterfly wings ... What makes me unsure about using the backing fabric for the border is that there is a lot of blues, greens and purples in the quilts as well as the yellows, oranges and reds.
I will post a pic later ......
-
Here are the new options (https://photos.app.goo.gl/xMGXKFGkZF538MvD9)
-
I still prefer option 5.
-
@wrenkins , the Cotton Patch have Radiance on their website in quilt backs.
I saw it when I was passing today.
-
Yup, I still like five.
-
Just passing you say @Pearl ;) 0_0
-
I have everything now to get cracking with this quilt.
I ordered the extra Oakshott Charcoal on Friday, it arrived yesterday and whilst I was in Poole I nipped into Seahorse Quilting and snaffled the last of the incredibly bright print for the flange ... it is exquisite!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
And as an added bonus, Michael Oakshott had slipped a free charm pack into my package ... showcasing 12 new and glorious colours! How lucky am I ?
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
So nothing to stop me now (yeah right!) :P
-
Yesterday was good!
A trial binding made , attached and approved
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
That's 3" of Colour and 2" of Grey giving a nice 1/2" of Flange
And then came the real thing 9 widths of Bright @ 3" and 9 widths of Oakshott Charcoal @2"
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Today I'm hoping will be the day I attach it ... but first the dentist .... Ouch?! :S
-
IT IS FINISHED!
I would upload pics but Picasa is having a hissy fit .... suffice to say the choice of binding is perfect, its stitched down with label attached (i didnt bother to redo) is on my bed, looking glorious and will be keeping me warm tonight!
-
Ok Hissy fit over ....

Did it work as beautifully as it looks @Iminei ?

I was lovely, warm and snug but surprisingly light ..... but I think I'd better ration its use if Im going to exhibit it next year! :(
