A Good Yarn / Lettering in knitting
« on: August 24, 2020, 12:02:32 PM »
I’ve been asked to knit a Wonderwoman hat for DGD, no problem. I just had a little look on Pinterest to see what was required and then adapted a basic beanie hat pattern.

I’m conscious I’ve done a lot of things for GD recently but not a lot for her older brothers so I asked them what hats they wanted.

The younger one asked for a Batman hat so that’s easy peasy.

The very grownup 8 year old said he thought he was too old for a Superhero hat but could he have a Fortnite one please.

Now I know he won’t want anything Grandma can make for much longer so I’m happy to oblige.

I’ve looked at the merchandise and I can make the hat easily but I can’t replicate the font, which I have a feeling is very important.

Does anyone know a resource  which will turn an image into a knitting chart?

Incidentally he might be too old for a Superhero hat but his 41 year old father is really hoping I’ll knit him one

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Janome Coverpro accessories
« on: August 21, 2020, 20:23:39 PM »
FOR SALE Janome Coverpro accessories.

I have the extension table, the adjustable seam guide and the wide elastic gathering attachment.

The table only had light use and neither of the feet have been used but there is some discolouration to the packages of the feet.

I’m looking for £45 to include 1st class P&P  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The Haberdashery / Gutermann Mara
« on: May 21, 2020, 16:37:50 PM »
I do like to keep a good stock of basic thread colours and was browsing eBay.

I found a seller doing ten 1000m reels of Mara for £45, you could pick your own colours from a range of blues, reds, greys etc, just what I was looking for.

I see it is Mara 100 rather than the 120 I usually get as an equivalent to Sew it All.  Now I get confused with thread weights and tend to stick with what I know.  I’ve had a quick Google and it seems it is fine for sewing seams which is what I want.

Can anybody tell me if I’m making a whoopsie before I spend £45.

Has anyone used the Crafters Companion spray adhesive?

I've just looked for 505 and I can't get it with my Cotton patch order so looked on Amazon and eBay and it was eye wateringly expensive. >:)

In the wardrobe / Top stitching thread for denim.
« on: April 04, 2020, 15:01:38 PM »
I’m about to cut out a denim pinafore dress and want to top stitch it in gold/yellow.

There is no thread in the stash that is suitable and as I am self isolating it will have to be bought over t’interweb.

Has anybody got any that they could check the number of.  I usually use Gutermann thread but anything I can get on line would be fine.

In the wardrobe / Topstitching
« on: March 15, 2020, 14:26:13 PM »
Tomorrow I am picking up some cotton duck in black with the intention of making another of This.

My intention was to use red buttons and topstitching but on looking through the stash I only have suitable buttons in sets of 5 rather than the six I need, but did find some rather nice black and white houndstooth check ones that would look good.

If I use these I can't decide what colour topstitching to do, I have a feeling white would look tacky somehow.

If I do change my mind and use the white, if I used poly thread it shouldn't pick up the colour from the black should it?

A Good Yarn / Two dolls
« on: February 13, 2020, 21:21:10 PM »
I have recently founds these two dolls that were made for my DD in the mid 80s.

I would love to restore them and give them to her 15m old daughter.

They’ve had a good bath and don’t look too bad apart from their hair which I am going to have to attempt to redo.  Also the boy dolls jacket is missing but I’m sure I can find a pattern somewhere to replicate that.

They were made by my aunt who is now in her 90s. I would love to be able to send her a photo of DGD playing with the dolls.

If anyone knows how to redo the hair I would love to know.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]     [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Has anyone tried this group on FB?

It has some very cheap and cheerful fabric. Might be worth a punt.

Patchwork & Quilting ... Welcome to the Darkside / Westalee Rulers Course
« on: December 10, 2019, 14:00:16 PM »
I’ve just received the equipment list for my Westalee rulers course next March.

I’ve got most things already but have to prepare 12 quilt sandwiches with cotton wadding.  As my contribution to the Dark Side has been minimal recently I need some wadding and some plain cotton fabric. I’ll have a root through the stash but think I’ll need a small shop after Christmas.

They appear to want you to use Glide thread which I’m not familiar with but will buy some in appropriate colours once I’ve made my sandwiches.

I’m pleased I’ve been given plenty of notice of the requirements. It means I can wait until after Christmas to get things prepared.

I’m really looking forward to this course.

A Good Yarn / Butterfly Cowl
« on: October 20, 2019, 16:10:41 PM »
Just finished this

It’s the Butterfly Cowl by Marin Melchior.

I’m not sure about it :S

I saw her Papillion Shawl pattern on Ravelry and loved it but I’m not really the shawl type, so was pleased when I saw she done this pattern. I love the effect but am not sure I’d find the cowl easy to wear, it’s a bit of a funny fit.

When I feel like knitting something that requires a fair amount of concentration I may try her scarf pattern which is what I should have picked in the first place.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Janome coverstitch skipped stitches
« on: October 17, 2019, 14:14:52 PM »
When I had my Coverpro skipped stitches when passing over seams drove me insane.

I have been reading on an FB coverstitches group about people raising the back feed dogs and getting a much improved stitch.

I can’t have a go myself as my Janome is no more but it might be worth trying for anyone on here with the same problem.

Details are on the FB Janome Elna  Coverstitch Support Group.

Events / Sew Up North
« on: September 02, 2019, 23:06:27 PM »
Has anyone else been to one of the previous Sew Up North events?

I’ve never managed to go before but this year I’ve got a ticket and am determined not to have to cancel.

Can’t beat a day out that’s all about sewing but I am a bit worried it’s going to be populated by trendy young things that are all about blogging and Instagram.

Access All Accessories / Moment of madness
« on: August 20, 2019, 14:26:36 PM »
DH asked me recently what I wanted for my upcoming birthday and in a moment of madness I asked for some leather to make a bag :S

I’ve just had a look at the very useful list from @Lizzielogs and am going to have a good peruse later.

I’ve made a few bags in the past but never in leather and am now wondering if I’m going to bite off more than I can chew, but heigh ho, no harm in trying.

I know I could just have asked for a new bag but if I leave DH to choose it, it will be boring and sensible.

Vintage Machines / 185k
« on: August 14, 2019, 13:44:45 PM »
I’ve been looking for a basic electrical machine for my grandkids to learn on and have seen a 185K on a local selling site for £35.

What do I need to check when I go to look at it, apart from the obvious things like does it actually stitch.

Do those of you with more experience think it would be suitable for a 7 and 8year old?

I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / Cheap fabric in York
« on: August 12, 2019, 14:09:49 PM »
For anyone in the York area, I've just seen on FB that Junk & Jewels are selling all their fabric for £2 a metre until the end of August.

They often have some nice stuff but I daren't go as I'm supposed to be reducing stash not adding to it :'(
