Patterns Discussion / McCalls 8246
« on: August 29, 2021, 13:40:27 PM »
Despite the fact that I have not bought a pattern for ages, I've been tempted by this in the shorter length.  I still have a coat sat waiting for the hem to be finished and some snaps on the collar along with some fabric for another short coat, not decided on the pattern but not enough for this.

In addition to this, I probably have too many coats but still the urge persists.

These machines are highly recommended - similar to the Janome 1600P etc.

On FB, she mentions the FOQ so I suspect bought there cheaply(had 10 hours use there) or a competition prize.  I had to give myself a good slap as well because I was sorely tempted  but lugging just over 6.5kg about from table to floor is a lot easier than 8.5kg.

Patterns Discussion / Waffle cargo vest

Very nice but not quite me, my working gear tends to be anything that is well past its sell by date, enhanced by splodges of paint.

I quite like  the one with the band at the bottom though, although no hood, I could be persuaded with that one.  Pocket variations to suit yourself and of course I love a zip.

Patterns Discussion / When the hole gets bigger, keep on digging
« on: July 31, 2021, 09:45:32 AM »
All I had to do yesterday was trim the coverstitched hem, fabric that was fine and without spending hours tweaking would have tunnelled.   I was nearly done when I got distracted, small hole cut (DH yelling at the cat).

After considering all options, I pinned some fabric on the back and used the machine's repair stitch, without looking at the manual first.  Not a neat job, machine went back and I wanted it forward, but it was okay and would always be unseen.  I turned it over and decided to trim off my patch.  One end done and DH walked in and asked me  something, stopped with the scissors, he went out, started again and my hand juddered (my excuse).  Another hole, bigger.

I weighed up the possibilities of cutting the whole lot off and doing the hem again, probably feasible.  I wanted it finished, so went upstairs and found a broad length of bias binding same colour (how lucky was that), trimmed some off and machined it on the bottom, just above the coverstitching.  A little label, it looked.

This morning I'm wearing it, plenty of room to cut off and redo but I'm leaving it, as a warning.  DH is practically blind in the house unless you draw his attention to something so he'll never notice, probably.

House Beautiful / I suppose it could be classed as furnishings
« on: July 13, 2021, 16:36:41 PM »
I've finished my second machine mat today, trying to pretend I can do quilting at the same time, well I made sandwich.  I'd already got a large fleece tablecloth underneath that I bought years ago but I wanted something that I could stick pins in with ease and find them again.

The bit forward of the machine has three layers of batting inside and across the front, which I think will take pins nicely.  I didn't bother adding pockets on this one, I just wanted a bit of dangle plus I didn't have enough fabric.  The 'quilting' is willy nilly to make sure the batting didn't migrate anywhere.

I clock off at 4 so didn't get time to take a picture of the one for the little Passport which does have pockets in.

I do have some strips of fabric left and I know at least one has a complete birdie in.  Happy to post if anyone can make use of them to cut up.

Patterns Discussion / Fabulosew
« on: July 10, 2021, 10:36:02 AM »
As you know I am a bit of a lazy madam and like an easy life.

Last night, planning future sewing of what months for what, and thinking about the state of my aging printer, which is fine on little jobs but iffy for others, I uploaded my pattern to Fabulosew for them to print it off. Not just print it off, since it was A4 (what idiots still do not do A0) 'stitch' it together first and then print off. 37 pages for £12.50 and thinking about the potential for an aching back doing it, worth every penny.  I even paid £1 extra for them to stick in a pattern envelope.

There, I have confessed.

Sewing Machines / Machine Weight/body strength
« on: July 08, 2021, 13:31:04 PM »
I had a bit of shock a few months ago when I was selling my Select 4 and was studying an unpacking video to remind myself how it was packed.  What got me was the young lady pulled the machine out by the handle with one hand and held it up in the air., around 8.5kg.

Yesterday I was watching a video of something being made which I was doing and just checking I had the right idea without going to the trouble of buying a pattern.  What fascinated me was that at various stages she just grabbed hold of the machine (a medium size one) and either pulled it to her or pushed it away.  The only way I could do that is with a mat underneath and she didn't have a mat.

I think I have become puny.  If I pick a machine up I have to concentrate on it (get myself prepared in my head).  I know if I shift the Mega Quilter, around 16kg, I find it easier to get both hands underneath it.

Patterns Discussion / Where can I find a pattern like this?
« on: June 24, 2021, 10:11:04 AM »
Saw yesterday and decided I want it, probably because I found some fabric I didn't know I had two days ago the same colour:

I've got a couple of patterns nearly like it but not the same on the collar part and the elastic although could probably fudge that.

Current Projects / Sewing Machine Mat
« on: June 22, 2021, 19:57:23 PM »
How hard is it to make one of these:

I bought this a couple of years ago and it is lovely, I recently bought another one  and although very nicely made, it is check and for some reason I don't like the blue check, although it looked okay on the picture and it has no padding in the middle only interfacing.  I am  relegating it to the machine behind me, the Mega Quilter.

So I've found some fabric I like, 2nd choice, first one was Christmas foliage and out of stock (course it would be).  I've got some batting to put between it, I can use the first one as a template on size.  I can do a bit of simple quilting on it and I can put together a piece with the pockets on, although I don't really use them but they look good if I do.

What could go wrong? I've also worked out I've got two weeks to make it before I start decorating in August, taking into account other projects to finish off and start.  I had better make a good job of it, it will be either in front of me or at the side of me, and I have no idea how big those birds are.

Sewing Machines / Bernina Bernette B77
« on: June 22, 2021, 13:20:20 PM »
I've always been a bit confused with Bernina and providing this cheaper machine.  Having nothing to  do on Sunday except play I was looking through the latest model Bernettes, the top end one now being the B77, to discover it had the identical walking  foot to the Pfaff IDT.  Dual feed, they call it

If they can add it on this machine why on earth don't they put on the higher end models?

After I'd finished my skirt today I went on to sort out my next pattern for a jacket.  I'd been at it before and then changed my mind , probably around 5 years ago (for a good job, worked out wonderfully with the McCalls pattern).  It was more to sort out  what I wanted and do the shortenings etc.  It was while I was going through it that I remembered that there were loads of pattern pieces and only being half interested it didn't take long to dump last time.

Today I found out why there seemed a lot, most of the pieces had been doubled up although no mention as I can see in the pattern for a reason, although I have read there are errors in the pattern.  I'm just going to do what I usually do, a jacket is a jacket and this one isn't having anything fancy on it.

Machine Accessories / Pfaff Magnetic seam guide
« on: May 20, 2021, 15:12:48 PM »
I've had this for a bit but as I'd never needed it, it was still in the box.

Today with some cover stitching to do I thought I would use it.  First panic, in a rush to get the packet open, about 6" by 4" ish, I couldn't see it for the amount of cardboard.  I thought great, ordered it, never opened and the dam thing isn't in.  When it dropped out I was rather underwhelmed, less than an inch square.

Anyway I put it where I wanted it, but it was moving around.  So I ditched it and went back to what I was using before, three large plastic paper clips (promotional material while I was at work) stuck together and then stuck on the machine.

Worked a treat.

I've decided that despite wanting them, it is highly likely they will not be used so I might as well get shut.  Unfortunately they are big patterns  and will need a large envelope stamp so I will not have them until Mr Morrison comes on Friday.
The cost is £6 including postage.

There was another one for a jacket, which I put on, then took off, I just might use it.
