Title: Should the dog go?
Post by: Sheilago on April 19, 2021, 10:26:31 AM
I’ve been making this play quilt for the expected grandson of a friend. The quilt is animal themed using a set of Dashwood fabrics and I thought I’d add a few pieced animal blocks .
The family have always owned Golden Retrievers, so I made an ‘ orange ‘dog, thinking it would match the orange in some of the fabrics. I laid out the blocks on the floor ( they’ve still to get pale grey sashing), but I feel the dog is jumping out at me. I tried putting it in the corner but that didn’t really help.
Should I make a mustardy dog
What do you think? :woof:  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

He is a gorgeous dog, but I would change the colour if I were you.  Some people do like a pop of a different colour though!

It's going to be a lovely quilt.

After I was relieved to find you were not getting rid of an actual dog, :loveit: I would leave it in, I think if they have dogs they will love it.

Certainly not - real dog is very much part of the family! 0_0  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I would leave it in - it's the main feature of the quilt.
Also keep the placement where it is; it's as near as you can get to the rule of thirds both ways on a 16 block quilt.

Phew, not a real dog!

I'd leave it in if it's for a child, they will love it, and won't be bothered about colours looking "right".

My first thought was oh no! poor doggie but it looks fine to me, I love all the other animal blocks too.

I'd change him for mustard but if you leave him the quilt looks fine

I love the pop of the dog but agree that he stands out compared to the other feature blocks ... If you can, I would remake the other animals in 'brighter' colours so they all fit in.

Lovely shaped dog by the way, hand drawn/cut ???

He does stand out, but I think it gives a spot of interest for the young child. I would leave it in.

It's a bit like 'Where's Wally?' in reverse. 'Where's Doggy?'

I don't know what your plans are for edging, bidning etc but maybe a bit of doggy colour in the edge or at corners would work.

Wondered what the dog had done

That’s a good idea @Flobear . I bought the coordinating multi coloured striped fabric for binding, but I might do the binding orange if I leave the orange dog in..I’ll give that some thought.  Also a good idea from @Iminei , but I don’t have the dedication to remake the other 3 animals. :faints:

You could add a wide Orange flange to the striped binding ?

but I don’t have the dedication to remake the other 3 animals. :faints:

Ah now I see that they're FPP ... No I wouldnt remake them either ... I thought you had drawn and appliqued them!

If you can make 4 more blocks, you could center the doggie, which would make him the star of the quilt?  He deserves the attention if he's the family pet.  :woof:

I love the doggy!  Yes he stands out, but I don’t consider that a bad thing.

He does stand out. I'd either remake him in a slightly darker orange similar to the tigers in the other fabric, or I'd include his orange color in the binding. I would NOT use mustard color.

I'd leave him in.  At first glance he stands out but after a bit you get used to him.  He looks fine.

What about putting a bit of colour on him, sort of a patch in another colour or even machine stitches in another colour across him, although he looks fine to me, and I am an expert on the Darkside

Thanks everyone,  for your ideas. I’ve now sewn the quilt and sashing together complete with the orange dog. @Gernella , I’m thinking about adding a dark collar, but will try to add more orange either as a binding or , as Iminei suggested, a flange.( Had to Google to find out what a flange was!  :[)

I’ll let you see the finished result when it’s done.

I'm glad that you have left him in @Sheilago, I think it looks great, and they will love that the dog 'stands out' in the quilt.
I only check TSP in the evenings - so always late to discussions  :|.

I think a black band for a collar would be just the thing, depending on the age of the recipient you could even sew on a small bell/charm/tag ??!!!!

If you can flange your binding with orange all the better ...

But if I may offer you a top tip, dont mess around with a teeny weeny 1/4 " flange ... Be Bold! and have at least 1/2" inch almost like a narrow border ...

My back of the sofa quilt has a very narrow border - 3/8" I think.  It wasn't my original intention but I like it.

The quilt is now finished, backed with turquoise bobbly cuddle fleece. I decided just to add a narrow orange border, but hadn’t thought about how that might mean I’d need more binding.  :S I only had one fq of the striped material, so had to do a little patching with different stripes. Hopefully not too noticeable. :D  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

That's worked beautifully @Sheilago - the dog pops, but the binding makes it all-of-a-piece.  Lovely. 0_0

It looks great, you were right to keep the dog and I can't tell where you had to patch the binding.

If you hadn't said I wouldn't have known!!
Why do we always need to point out our mistakes/errors? I do it myself but really no one else notices!!  :P
