I had a bag making book for Christmas, along with a box of all the gubbins required to make a bag look like a bag! :) Hardware, I think they call it. So I need to practice ... I might just make a baby changing bag - that's the nappies that change, not the baby.

Don't know anyone having a baby (just for a change in this family  ;) ) but I expect someone will want it.

I don't have the time or the machine to do this at present but I do have fabric kept to make a baby quilt.
#When my daughter was married I made my first quilt using the bunting.
I kept enough back of the bunting (I hope) to make a baby quilt for a future baby. $ years on and I am fairly sure there will not be a baby b ut I would still like to make the quilt and this is the  encouragement I need.

However it will be done in my own time and posted as and when

I'm going to be making an attempt at the Desert Charm Quilt (https://runningstitchquilts.com/products/desert-charm-quilt-pattern-pdf) in the smallest size.

It, uh, has a lot of moving parts.. so wish me luck.

Fabrics have arrived:

And I have some white left over which I can use for the background bits.

I think I'm going to join in with this one. Just because I feel like it. Nothing to do with any new arrivals. Honest...(well, none that I'm aware of anyway.)
It's just something small and I'm in the mood to join in.  :)

It's looking a bit soppy and pink (does it really matter?) but these are the fabrics I've found out of my stash for it. They go together quite well. Might lose some of the pink if it looks too much as I'm going along.

I found a baby quilt online which I liked the look of and I've trimmed it down to make my version a smaller width.

Lovely choice of design there @bec  ... Looking forward to seeing that ...

Add some burgundy/brown or even green  (https://photos.app.goo.gl/JWr242iRk8emkpNq8)to tone down the pink @Sandra

@Bjay  ... Yours will be a triangle quilt then ??? Colour with palest ... or are you adding something else into the mix?

Soppy and pink  doesn't matter at all  <3
I have no one to make one for ...but....as I said I would join in things this year I'll give it a go

Hmmm...OK.
That's not looking all that pink.  :) Could have been worse.
There's plenty of white in there to soften it.

The outer triangle bits will be a bit more pink, and some of the other colour fabrics.

I'd quite like to join this. My best friend's
daughter & wife will be having their second daughter in April. I made a playmat for the first, they have all the obvious things like changing bag etc, any suggestions?

I am considering this, as I offered to make a play quilt for a friends grandchild expected in April. However, I am busy helping with child care after my daughter’s new arrival in Dec. It may be that January is not the best timing for me, but I will keep it in mind if I find the time. :D

I've done this much.
There will be a (maybe) 2 inch border outside the white in the multi fabrics, then another white outer border.
I've done enough for now. It can sit and stew for a few days before I tackle it again.

I want to make a jacket for a new baby later this month.  My friend doesn't know if it is a boy or a girl, so I have to steer clear of the lacy patterns.
I want to go 'cold sheep' as well.  I have a nice collection of baby cashmerino, but only 2 and a bit of cream, 2 of a dark cream, 2 deep teal, 1 light teal, 2 dark brown and 4 lighter brown.  I want to make it lighter for a new baby.  Maybe use the darker ones when it is older.  I think I will need about 3 balls for the small size so I was looking for a pattern I could put stripes in.  Found 'After the Storm' on the Love Craft site.  It is a free pattern with raglan sleeves and hardly any seams, so nice and soft for a new baby.  Amazingly, it is for my cashmerino!
So far, I have done the neck ribbing. Not feeling too bright at the moment but hope to get it done before he/she arrives.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

i'm thinking pale cream with stripes in the teals and light brown.  Maybe a line of colour in the edgings.

A quiet day today and still a lot of snow and ice around, so decided to start on a scrappy baby quilt, using this design found online.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The family it’s for are interested in marine conservation, so I’m putting in as many fabrics as I have with sea creatures, but also  lots of other things that will be of interest to a child. I do like to make up an ‘I spy’ list once I’ve finished a scrappy quilt, then I print the list out and give it with the quilt for future games when the child is older. I’ll post some photos of its progress but can’t promise to finish this month.

After a bit of faffing around, I found something to use as the backing for my quilt. I didn't want to spend too much money on it and lots of 'perfect' fabrics would have cost too much.

Found a seller yesterday with some very well priced fabric at £5 a metre and only £1.53 p+p. It's just a bit of good old faithful Spraytime in a sky blue.  You can't go far wrong with Spraytime.

Ordered it yesterday morning off Ebay, and it's just arrived! How good is that?
Thank you, lovely seller, and well done to Royal Mail.

I was asked by a friend to make 2 ‘I Spy’ name cushions for babies born in Dec and Jan, so I made these this weekend. I suppose they’ll count if I don’t get my quilt finished. One is being posted to USA, so it doesn’t have a cushion pad. I was trying a rainbow layout, so made the name label smaller than usual to incorporate part of the coloured blocks that formed the pattern. Not sure it’s a total success ><
If any of you in USA  know a baby Kenji , don’t spoil the surprise! ;)
The other one was a nightmare. I’d just sewn the back on, zigzagged all the way round the inside and then topstitched , when I noticed a small scissor nick at the top of the back. So, much unpicking later, I had to cut out the offending piece and add a different panel of sheep fabric to the back!

Congratulations @Sakar ! Is little Wolf excited to be a big brother?

And finally, a picture with little Ted. He was a freebie when my parents bought my pram. There's a photo of me as a very small baby, screaming in my pram, with my Mum holding this bear trying to shut me up.

I've enjoyed making this and I'm pleased to have mainly used bits out of my stash. No idea what I'll do with it.

Bec’s entry

What is it and for whom (if applicable)
I’ve kept in touch with a friend from my old job, and he and his wife are expecting their first child in March, so this baby quilt is being shipped off to Poland for them.

Pattern used (commercial or self-drafted, anything goes)
I used the Desert Charm pattern by Running Stitch, with some minor alterations. (I rotated a couple of pieces so there are 2 kinds of block rather than 1).

Fabrics used (pictures welcome)
All the patterned fabrics on the front are from the Je Ne Sais Quoi range which Doughty’s had discounted in December. The off-white was what I had remaining from the chevron quilt I made for a friend at Christmas. The fox backing is an eBay find which I was initially planning to use for a mock up for a shirt, but I ended up not doing a mock up so this fabric has just been in the drawer - it was very satisfying to not have to do any piecing on the back!

A short description on how you made it, any problems overcome etc.
I wanted to push myself a bit on this one and did end up having a tough time; it’s the most complicated project I’ve attempted so far (by a long way) and I spent much of that time in Seam Bulk Logistics Hell.
I’m pleased with the end result. Most of the points are pointy, and I have discovered just how satisfying I find snowball corners to make. :) Plus the corners on my binding actually look like corners this time! I'm still very much a novice but it's nice to see improvement.

Sheilago’s entry 1

What is it and for whom
This is a scrappy baby play quilt for a friend’s grandchild, due in April.

Pattern used
I found a picture of a quilt online and copied the design  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Fabrics used
All the fabrics were from my stash. The family that it is for are very interested and involved in marine conservation, so I tried to use as many fabrics with sea creatures that I could find. There are dolphins, fish, crabs , starfish, a jelly fish etc. However there are lots of other things too for the child to look at. I usually include an I spy list of everything to be found in the quilt, for games when the child is a bit older.

 how I made it
The photo that I saw was for a rectangular quilt, but I wanted it to be square, roughly 40”x 40”, so I worked out what size each big 4 square block should be and took it from there. I had a big piece of bobbly minky fleece left from another quilt, so I used that on the back and as I do like a stripey binding, I used the green, yellow and tan fabric for binding. The binding was machined onto the front and then hand stitched on the back.
I free motion quilted all over ( except for straight stitching around the border).
I tried out a simple loopy design , with a small circle inside each loop. This is more visible on the picture of the back. The loops kind of reminded me of bubbles which suited the sea theme.

Sheilago’s entry 2

What is and for whom
I was asked by a friend to make 2 ‘I Spy’ name cushions for babies born in Dec and Jan, so I made these .  One is being posted to USA, so it doesn’t have a cushion pad. I was trying a rainbow layout, as that seemed appropriate for a 2020 baby, so I made the name label smaller than usual to incorporate part of the coloured blocks that formed the pattern. Not sure it’s a total success ><

Pattern and fabric used
I’ve made quite a few of these patchwork cushions, based on one I saw online several years ago. All the fabrics are from my stash. I try to use as many fabrics as possible, with a different fabric in each square.

How I made them

These are quite easy to make. I sew the squares together, including the name block , which is free motion embroidered. I then add wadding and backing and quilt the front with a free motion design.I then add an envelope back to match.

The one for George was a nightmare. I’d just sewn the back on, zigzagged all the way round the inside and then topstitched , when I noticed a small scissor nick at the top of the back. So, much unpicking later, I had to cut out the offending piece and add a different panel of sheep fabric to the back!

Sandra's entry.

What is it and for whom
A baby quilt, finished size is 35" x 45". Made simply because I was in the mood to join in and I'd got some suitable fabrics stashed away.

Pattern used
I found an image online of a quilt I liked the look of so I adjusted the sizing to be slightly smaller on mine.

Fabrics used
All from my stash except the backing fabric. I'd even got a piece of wadding to fit.

Short description
It's a simple design so it went together easily and quickly. I was a little concerned about there being too much pink fabric, but I'm happy with the final mix of colours.

I bought one metre of backing fabric which is just a bit too narrow to fit, hence the strip of blocks across the back.
I've added a very simple label on the back. A sew-on 'Made by' label, and I've hand stitched the month and year.

Well getting along with the jacket, and a second one (she said a couple)  It's  a race between the calendar, the baby and me.  I have a chance of finishing them tomorrow - only the buttons and all that pesky darning in.  Not my favourite job.

When I was dividing the stitches for the sleeves it seemed very familiar.  yes, I already had a top down pattern from many moons ago. That's it in the middle.  It will be all darning tomorrow, good thing I have more time to put the entry into some sort of order.

I didn't finish mine in time.  By 31st I had done it all but with two 'solid' button bands.  I was going to undo the last few rows on the correct side and reknit with buttonholes, but the baby did not arrive until Sunday night.  I will put in a picture to show what I did (just to show I haven't been sitting on my hands all month) It's a girl, so I have redone the right side band on both jackets. Hope you like them.

I see the next to bottom button needs moving up.  Must remember to enclose a ball band with the washing instructions.

They’re lovely @toileandtrouble . The new baby girl is going to need some cosy cardigans this winter!  What a lot of bother you went to to change the button bands. I’m sure the new mum wouldn’t have minded- I don’t think my daughter would know whether buttons are on the correct side.

Toileandtrouble's Entry

Two baby jackets for a friend's first baby due in January. My friend didn't know if it was a boy or a girl, so I hadto steer clear of the lacy patterns.

Pattern based on free pattern, 'After the Storm' on the Love Craft site.  It is a free pattern with raglan sleeves and hardly any seams, so nice and soft for a new baby.  Amazingly, it is for my cashmerino!

(After I had started I discovered there was a Sirdar pattern in my stash which was top-down, very similar in construction.)  I needed 4 stitch markers for the increase positions so I used some spare coloured rings from my electric toothbrush.  You cast off two stitches for the armholes when you divide, then cast on two when you knit the sleeves. I wanted to knit the sleeves in the round to save a seam so used my little sock needles on them. On the second jacket I realised I could just pick up the cast off stitches instead of casting on and save another bit of sewing up.
For the second jacket I decided to use the teal and lighten it with a fashionable 'fairisle' band.  Kept getting in a muddle with the increases and the pattern I was trying to make.  Had to keep adjusting the pattern until I got one that would work with the numbers of stitches, which increase on every other row.  Made a guess on which colours would work, but OK I think.

By 31st I had done it all but with two 'solid' button bands, but the baby did not arrive until Sunday night. It's a girl!   I had to undo the last few rows on the correct side and reknit with buttonholes, then sew on the buttons.  So, not strictly 'in time'  but offered for your consideration!
