Title: Knitting For The Dolls
Post by: Ann on May 22, 2019, 10:23:06 AM
I do quite a bit of knitting and love to knit for the dolls. I just finished this pattern the other day.

I love how the pattern fits the doll and I love the color (Mallard Teal). The yarn is Paton's DK wool and was a delight to knit.

I also knit a long scarf out of acrylic and wound it around the doll's neck. The next time I knit it, I'll make it another 25 rows longer.

I'm pleased with the results of this pattern.

I could do with someone like you knitting for me, lol.

That outfit looks so warm and cosey.  I wouldn't mind one in my size.  :)

Your dolly looks gorgeous!

I finished a hooded vest for the dolls. This one is made out of cotton yarn and was nice to work with. The pattern fits well and will great with leggings and a t-shirt.

I'm taking a bit of time off doll clothes to finish a scarf that I started about 6 months ago.

Another doll's sweater is done. This one took a bit of time to get the gauge correct but the time spent was worth it.

(http://It is hard to find that weight yarn locally so am trying to use up the stash of which I have the blue, grey, cream and dusty rose.)

Trying to finish another doll's sweater and I finally got past row 3. Hopefully it will be done this week as I have another one to make before the end of the month.

I finished another sweater for the dolls and love the look. I'm very partial to the Hudson Bay blankets and this cute coat is a reminder of them.

Though easy to knit, it is time consuming to finish as there are a lot of ends to weave in and hems to sew up. But, I've done some googling and found a few new techniques to try when knitting with color changes.

Mary Ann is ready for Canada Day, unless it gets very hot here; the forecast says 20C. Maybe she can wear it in an air conditioned building. LOL

Lovely doll’s clothes. Do you sell them or keep them all? Mary Ann is lucky  :D , she looks great , very pretty, but unusual, with her slightly prominent teeth. <3

This sweater will be kept but I am sewing and knitting to get an inventory ahead so I can sell outfits rather than pieces.

One of the things with American Girl dolls is that some have slightly prominent teeth. I favor the ones with no teeth showing. I only have the two AG dolls as my favorite are the Gotz Happy Kidz dolls. I have 4 of them.

Another doll's dress knit. It is made out of an acrylic/mohair blend in a dusty mauve.

I'm going to be one happy camper when the yarn I have been using for testing is gone. I'm not a huge fan of it but the price was good. Once gone, I will buy some nicer yarn to knit with.

@Celia, thank you for your kind words. I will use up the yarn as much as I dislike it. If the designer keeps pumping out the patterns using that size wool, it will be gone before I know it. If not, the full balls will go to goodwill next spring.

I got another sweater set knit and used the same Downton Abbey yarn as before but the blue.

I went down a needle size and it fits the doll perfectly.  Now back knitting hats.

Another sweater using the Downton Abbey yarn. This time in grey. Cute pattern with two types of cables.

Do you use any particular patterns? Or do you write your own?

@b15erk, thank you for the lovely words. Sorry I'm so long at answering as I haven't checked this thread.

I am a pattern tester for Pixie Faire (doll clothes sewn and knit) plus for a private individual. I enjoy knitting with finer yarn vs sport weight yarn but each weight has its own purpose. I have found that most (not all) North American's use a sports weight yarn as it is fast and quite readily available. The lighter weight yarn is slower to knit but I love the results. I have patterns using sock yarn but the last 4 I've knit are in a bit heavier yarn. It seems to be easier to find in the UK and South Africa and harder to find here. I bought a bunch of that weight yarn when it was discounted and have enough left for 4-5 more tests.

Have fun knitting for your dolls when you get the time. I do enjoy knitting for mine.

I've done more knitting and have finally got them photographed.

This was a test pattern and it was quite fun to knit up. I want to sew a skirt to go with it when the machines get back from servicing.

This pattern I tested quite a while ago. I made this one to perfect the fit. I am thinking one size larger needles for the hat. I'm fussy on fit.

I'm knitting a dress right now and am 2/3rds the way done it. I keep plugging away at it and hope to have it done soon.

Third time lucky with this dress. First time the fit was off. Second time I found a dropped stitch 28 rows back. This time I got it done. I had to lengthen it by knitting 11 extra rows but the length is perfect in my opinion. It needs buttons as mine are too big. I'll get them Wednesday.

I'm taking a break from knitting doll clothes and am doing a course to knit a child's sweater. It is very simple and a bit boring but it's filling my knitting needs at the moment.
Title: Re: Knitting For The Dolls

I used up the last of some yarn given to me. It was a cotton polyester blend and it knits up beautifully. I decided to knit a sweater pattern I had tested 9 months ago. It is easy but quite cute. I was short yarn for the cast off row so did it in another color. So it became known as the barn sweater.

I'm knitting mittens right now and they are fiddly to do. I will cast off one tonight and start the other. When it is done, I'll go back and do the thumbs. They are hard to do and I need to have lots of patience when doing them.
Title: Re: Knitting For The Dolls
Post by: Ann on March 20, 2020, 10:37:23 AM
The mittens got put on hold as 2 patterns arrived to be tested. The first is a sweater that is growing on me.

It is a bulky style using fine yarn. Expensive fine yarn on my part.

The second pattern has a hat and sweater. I've finished the hat and it is really cute.

I'm knitting the second sleeve and then it's on to the body of the sweater. I'm slow at this as I don't have a good way of knitting with 2 yarns and it isn't without trying to learn a way.

I quite like the asymmetrical front on this one and I put a bigger button on to make that feature the focus. I also used a different yarn for testing for this designer and it worked out perfectly.

Another sweater has been tested and before I finished, the pattern disappeared. It hasn't been published and there were some complaints about how the pattern was written. It was hard to follow and I'm hoping she is rewriting it.

It fits this doll on the tight side which could be due to the yarn I used.

I knit another sweater and hat with the flock of sheep on it. This time the main color was light blue.

This designer is selling her patterns on a new venue and had to rewrite her pattern to meet their criteria. It is a nice pattern but I won't knit it again unless I do it in one color.

I'm test knitting for a new designer now and hope to have it done this coming week. A really cute pattern.

I'll be knitting this one again to use up some of the stash.
Title: Re: Knitting For The Dolls

I finally finished this sweater for the dolls. It was put aside so many times while testing patterns for designers.

The pattern is for advanced knitters and I'm glad I knit it and stretched my knitting skills. There were levels of frustration felt as the pattern has mistakes in it and took a bit of time to figure out what needed to be done. At one point I didn't think it would fit any of the dolls but it did. I doubt if I will knit this pattern again unless I do it as a test pattern to help fix the mistakes.

Perhaps you need some dolls @Celia.  Is it you who makes teddy bears?  If so, they might like some jumpers :D

The next test pattern has been completed and I quite like the sweater. The first one I've knit with a shawl collar.

As usual, it fits the doll well and the instructions were wonderful.

I bought shades of denim blue yarn to make this one again.

I finished another test pattern and got it photographed yesterday. I like this pattern with the leg of mutton sleeves and the curly scarf.

The scarf will be made again to go with coats. I may make the sweater again as it is a quick knit that looks smart. The hat is the designers usual patter with a different band on it. I like berets and enjoy knitting them.

Another test pattern has been completed and this is a cute sweater. There is a wide ribbing that is longer than most and the collar is almost a faux funnel collar. The cable is refreshing. The hardest thing thing to remember was the purl was the right side.

Another test that ended up with a well fitting sweater

Not being a knitter the knitting posts tend not to register with me but l spotted this trying to find a different post on dolls.

@Ann I especially like your winter white set of Tam O'Shanter and shawl neck jacket. When I see this I think I should try again but I know all too well that I'll give up at the first hurdle. I'm happy with crochet but my hands just don't like knitting. Unfortunately for me, knitting simply lends itself so well to making for dolls because the scale of the stitches. Not moaning though, there are plenty of knitters who'd find sewing for dolls a punishment rather than a pleasure.

I have to do the first one again for the designer when she get the pattern updated. The other one is an easy knit I did. Took me no time at all. But then I'm a knitter and not a crocheter.

@Marniesews, its an aran color. I'm going to do it again in a denim yarn that is sort of variegated. It is the one I have to retest for the designer.
Title: Re: Knitting For The Dolls

It looked perhaps off-white to me but arran is a very nice subtle colour. It'll be interesting to see how the denim yarn changes it. The variegation may add more visual texture, I wonder if it will impact the effect of the contrasting stitching on the bands? Always fun to see how things change with colour and fabric variations. Sometimes you can predict it and then sometimes it's quite a surprise.

@Marniesews, I wonder how it will look in the denim yarn also. Still waiting for the pattern to come out to be tested again.

I have knit another sweater. This time I used Downton Abbey yarn (Lady Sybil and discontinued). It has mohair in it and leaves white fluffies in the yarn that look likes cat hair (ah yes, there is some of that in my knitting also). The pattern uniqueness is the eyelets are the increases for the yoke. Very impressed with that. I had my forgetfulness with the eyelets in the body; forgot the first row and then a yarn over near the finish line. But it is done and I quite like it.

This sweater will also be done again in a variegated yarn on a size larger needle so it is a bit bigger to go over an Edwardian blouse and skirt set I want to make. Once the sweater is made, I will buy the fabric to make the outfit. In the mean time, I'm back to knitting the daisy stitch sweater. I'm enjoying it but it does take a long time to knit and is a real yarn hog. But, it will fit in with another outfit idea I have.

I finished another sweater to give away. It is a cute sweater with a pocket in the front. Useless for dolls but a cute design feature. The sleeves are patterned but hard to see in the grey wool. I do love the ribbed turtle neck on this sweater.

One of the things with American Girl dolls is that some have slightly prominent teeth. I favor the ones with no teeth showing. I only have the two AG dolls as my favorite are the Gotz Happy Kidz dolls. I have 4 of them.

Maybe you know this already but the American Girl doll Kaya isn't showing her front teeth- she is from the Nez Perce (Nimipuu) tribe and their cultural advisors informed AG that showing her teeth like that would have been seen as a sign of aggression. I think she is a beautiful doll with a subtle, calm face. Apparently the Logan doll, the boy, uses the same closed-mouth face mold.

I knit the Gotz dolls an outfit using some very expensive yarn. This outfit has $32.00 worth of yarn in it. I love the pattern as it fits the dolls really well. The designer is extremely creative in her designs and patterns.

I was a bit worried that the hat would be too big but it fits to perfection. I did it in 2 colors also.

I have cast on a different sweater for these dolls using the same yarn in red. I got 7 rows knit and am happy with the look and feel of the yarn. I have to go up a needle size with this designer. She is a looser knitter than I am.

I don't often knit a test pattern twice in a short period of time but I did this one. The skirt is the same one in both pictures.

I made the sweater in blue and wasn't happy with it. It didn't go with the grey in my opinion.

When I finished it, I said I wouldn't knit the pattern again. I had a mistake and it bugged me. So much so, I frogged the blue sweater and knit the pink one. This one I like a lot more. It goes with the grey skirt.

I am now taking a break from knitting until I get a book read.

I've not checked out your knitting page for a while so you've several more lovely things to look at here.  :loveit:

I'm reminded of what I can't do of course, but perhaps I enjoy looking at yours even more for that!  I often find the greatest pleasure in the details and that green hat is absolutely lovely with the diagonal rib across the front band. Very nice indeed. The garment it goes with looks very complex. You may tell me it's just the contrast of textured stitches and colours, although I doubt that.  ;)

As for your recent colour combinations, heather and grey make a wonderful combination but I love the blue colour and the grey might not be as perfect for it but I really wouldn't say it doesn't go together.
Title: Re: Knitting For The Dolls
Post by: Ann on June 30, 2021, 13:01:05 PM
@Marniesews, thank you for the lovely words on the outfits I've knit.

The green and grey outfit isn't complex but I had to sit and talk myself through every row so I wouldn't make a mistake (of which I did and had to fix them). But it was worth it as I do love the outfit. I, too, love the diagonal rib across the band on the hat. The red hat is the same pattern just done in one color.

The grey, blue and heather yarn are suppose to go together. There was a soft white color also. The blue goes with the grey but I just like the heather/grey combo better.

There have been no new patterns out for knitting so I'm taking a break and want to cast on a sweater for the doll's I've been wanting to knit again. Hopefully it will happen next week.

Beginning of the year I knitted a rugby shirt type sweater for my doll,  to use up some variegated yarn.  I thought it would be easy to make trousers to go with it. When I went to find fabric for some trousers I discovered I was wrong. It doesn't look good with anything.

I finished another pattern (testing) and, though cute, I won't knit the top again. Maybe the skirt to go with another sweater.

I used a sock yarn in a heathered tone as I didn't have any plain colored yarn. I'm trying to use up the yarn in the stash. I'm knitting socks now to use up yarn that has too long a color run for doll clothes.

I knit another top for one of the dolls and will add a picture of her wearing it when I get the buttons sewn on. It is a relatively simple pattern to follow being knit from the top down. I used up the left over yarn from a pair of socks I made for her Xmas present.

@toileandtrouble, the designer Deb Denair and the pattern is Best Friends. If you have a Ravelry account you can find it here (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/best-friends-4). To knit for 18" dolls, I would go up a needle size as this is for the slim fitting Gotz dolls.

I finished another test pattern and am I ever happy it is done. Almost 2 weeks of knitting as often as I could on it. I am not a fan of this pattern though others like it.

The shawl is 180 rows and the jumpsuit took forever as it has a lot of rows on each leg. None of the testers finished it in the 7 day window she set and I was the last one to finish.

Ann your dolls clothes are rather gorgeous (so are the sewn ones).

Toileandtrouble  a few years ago I came across someone reviving the dolls clothes for the tiny Rosebud Twin dolls that were around in the 1950's, so I treated myself to several of these books and also at the time someone had reproduced all the original knitting patterns for these dolls which used to appear in Woman's Weekly in the 50's.  So again this found its way here and I then purchased some of these old dolls and intended to knit these garments, I have not got very far, and luckily I still have a supply of the various knitting needles used back then and managed to find some really fine needles something like size 15 or 16.  I happen to machine knit, and use industrial yarns so I think I will be okay with regards getting the yarn right for these tiny garments.  At the time back in the 50's my sister and I were not allowed to have these Rosebud dolls, and in fact the tiny dolls we did have were even smaller than the Rosebud Twins and I do still have mine and I think my sister has too.  We used to enjoy knitting these sometimes quite intricate garments, and where we used to live at the time an organisation in the town held various arts and crafts exhibitions and we were encouraged to enter these and yes we won prizes sometimes it was something like 2/6d (yes two shillings and sixpence).  I even entered a pair of real baby's bootees in one of these exhibitions and won a prize and that had a proper turned heel.  My sister and I would often take our knitting with us if as a family we went out for a day to the seaside and sat in the back of the car knitting happily away - a good way to pass the time to see just how much we could achieve.

I finally got the last test pattern photographed. I did the cables wrong giving the sweater a totally different look than what the designer had called for.

The fit of the sweater is great and I love the hat as it went on at jaunty angle by accident. This is for the little girl I knit and sew for as she has a boy doll in desperate need of clothes.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEggYYpWSbcZLko7Tol2kyZ0iC4b5upYungNbrbvm9OMdXDrw4vD9asx1kcKTTkuYGGMITK-zvH736F4NP1bMJJrd_hoL-vDorhK-LuqROqx51ZVKdzD-YFT67wybeAagdb0a970Lk4E537ApcxjXlZV1RNJKrWwxmEHtiVohTtl2VazBQh6qg=w300-h400)

The picture has been lightened so you can see the cables. It has been dull and dreary here for quite a while making it hard to photograph.

I finished a sweater set a bit ago and finally got it on the doll. I had made the jeans 4 years ago and they go perfectly with the sweater. The yarn is Lion's brand called Ice Cream and the color is Tutti Frutti.

The scarf is a cute addition to the outfit and is quite long.

I had enough yarn to make a short sleeved sweater and hat. I  have a dress to make to go with it so it should be done either later this month or early April.

@Ann I am intrigued by your dolls and their wardrobes and would love to know more. However, if it's intrusive please don't bother to answer. <3
Are the dolls yours? Are they commissioned or sold? Is it a charity project? What happens to them and their clothes?
How did you get into working in miniature? It looks to be more fiddly and difficult than creating for people...even children! Finally (I promise) have you been thus occupied for long?
Many thanks  <3

@Lowena, I have 13 dolls; 9 are American Girl dolls and 4 are Gotz Happy Kids. The historical outfits I make, I keep. I have a selection of modern clothes I use to make outfits when modelling new items. I use to test patterns but stopped when DH’s memory issues get somewhat worse. I was having problems meeting the completion dates.

Most of the modern doll clothes I make I give to a 7 year old girl who has 5 dolls. She loves getting the clothes and I love giving them to her.

I got into dolls 6 years ago to promote patterns, fabrics, and trims at the fabric store I worked in. I just kept at it after we moved here. It’s a hobby. I love the fiddly work as it keeps me stimulated which I need. I also belong to online doll groups, my favourite group is one where we all have different types of dolls. We have fun admiring each other’s creations. I’m the only one who knits though another lady is learning.

Ask more questions if you need too.

Thanks for the information @Ann it is a very interesting journey and you are clearly very talented to work in such a small scale.  :flower:

Thank you @Lowena. One thing I notice when sewing for the dolls how much pinching I do with my fingers to hold the small pieces in place until I pin them. I will also adjust until I'm happy. Most of the items I make, I do a lot of flat sewing. Hems are done before side seams are sewn unless you are hand sewing them in place. Slightly changing the order of how you sew can make a huge difference in how easy it is to sew certain seams.  With knitting, it is less stitches and paying attention to the instructions.

I made a cute dress to go with a sweater set I knit. It certainly compliments the set. The sweater set I tested over a year ago and have made it a couple of times since. It is quick and easy and cute.

Now I'm knitting socks for DDIL. When they are done, I'll knit another doll's item.

With DH's health declining, I put away my knitting needles after I tested this simple pattern for a friend. I spent all my time with him until he passed away in September.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm0QHn1bORL3klJjq5UPCythIdqxkAryuwpXvAdNaR7JqLgL3z8Gn5KVuA6TbmKE5mwinoxSp7kJPg3OXP2cARSvQ_EffNELndfabs1MeWi5e3WTaV28noR4ZQ5x8L6SMV2zoL4-uFpSH5Ub3WimoGJiUlTNfQ6LGIHVS6cWCdD3t4A4qR2w/w300-h400/IMG_0531.HEIC)

I have since picked up my knitting needles and have completed this test pattern for another friend. I am finding knitting helps pass the evenings and I also feel productive.

This pattern is still in the testing stage but I'm hoping she will get it published soon. I do enjoy testing for her.

They are beautiful I particularly like the second one and so well knitted.

I am actually envious of you being able to knit these lovely things for a purpose if you know what I mean.  I often see things and do knit them but it’s not always easy to find a home for them.

I also find knitting helps me

Your doll's outfits are always beautiful @Ann.  I’d like the grey cardigan myself! :)

@Ohsewsimple, I'd love a cardigan like the grey one myself.

I finally finished the shawl and it was a bigger knit than I expected. Small needles and fine yarn and the fact I wanted it to be long enough to wrap around under the doll's arms. The shawl took 50 grams of sock yarn.

The centre back has an interesting increase that I loved the effect it made.

I'm knitting socks at the moment and am not sure what I will knit once they are done. It will be for the dolls as I am alternating doll clothes with socks. Trying to keep it interesting.

I finished another test pattern for the same designer as the grey one. This one was a challenge as I was scatter brained while doing it. But the end result is really quite a nice, well fitting sweater.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0WuJhuU7b1wHZVFPIuDDnw2lvljMb9qMRvMOvf3K9GizFDK7Fru5G5-jgoHCspdqLM_2vdJdMma0w8GVqT9yHOFi_AlqNSXNyXseQsOfSdV0wdDIa5yPlCHMprYHwgK3o6CPlcBi8zrDUlQZWTe-nw5A-_d8Lihm7DC_H-Sb17VcYVK7ajQ/w300-h400/IMG_1324.jpeg)

I have started another sweater and have given that designer an idea for her next pattern. Such great fun to be back to testing. I'm trying to do only a couple of patterns and then back to socks. I will have lots of time to knit as I will be helping with DS's care after he has surgery tomorrow.

Things are moving along here. DS is now taking physio for his shoulder and is doing well. Hurrah for that.

I've been knitting most evenings and made this coat/sweater and beret twice. Once too small and this time the fit is great.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh0-R13YhYZ76Zmp9FFdrDoQLb2J9BjglH8h52vHxGeHbYeLi1GF-KMhESp6SkkrHMssCHVHOsMzOg1Umge8afxJHPeILVdOBuJVKquX4WEap88uYUVt7biymVjj6UO-bUkKBqWeP-U31e0d_mpcLShuEMD7DJNZL1sOd6gdnXEUpo9RigOw/w300-h400/IMG_1686.jpeg)

The pattern is Braemar and can be bought at Ravelry. I had to go up one needle size even though my tension was perfect on the size of needles required. My tension probably changed when doing the pattern stitches though I thought they were okay.

I got another sweater knit for the dolls. This is another test pattern. A quick knit with a delightful pattern at the yoke and hem.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHIbWLmUwsBIrHu_Kru4WrLGiAQGyKkNoSmMKuhnyIh2bJ0JFvSIkhOLvHaXphW0Dl3W4BHvoWEtEKJ3vS344sW9qFCx6yVWFaMCkrG3bW_nRbiYQw-sYv1zmFRhuvrpc6_yeKhLSyAH1m0ij9TSAqFZLII3uEXZRgWKorpiCBnJ7rwzgLAg/w300-h400/IMG_1922.jpeg)

I have half a tam knit but wait and see if I need to redo it on larger needles. The designer of the tam pattern is a loose knitter and I struggle with tension on some of her patterns, especially the hats.

I haven't knit much for the dolls lately. I decided to start an outfit in June and finally finished it yesterday. The sweater was done in fairly good time but I knit the leggings twice. They were too short in the body the first time. I didn't knit for days on end as it was humid and I was fighting to keep the house cool and lower the humidity at the same time. I finally figured it out.

The outfit is from a pattern (https://www.ravelry.com/projects/cataddict/steampunk-halloween-freebie-pullover-and-pants-patterns) that is free on Ravelry and for Gotz dolls. I didn't do the crochet trim as I am terrible at crocheting. The next time I would knit the sleeves and body longer.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtiPvPr9MN4q5qBQR6vWQf--XlZ5NO9UnqQR-x9_vNNSFuSRzX4xdTmhw9r0u9Z-jbJWomwEzGQzgKM3qI5QtAIPqhmIhAVCrREebZbB8s0_9lbA1R0YCYUxBlE8eR6P13-Eoy391GDZmcSmOGvhFloriipvlJhwJar2iiZfvPeYXS1gvV_KwZ/w300-h400/IMG_3200.jpeg)

I bought the yarn years ago and then didn't make the outfit for some unknown reason. I think it was due to the fact I was testing patterns and had no time for my own knitting. I do test a pattern or two yearly now and have started to enjoy knitting again for the dolls choosing patterns I want to knit.

I knit another outfit for the dolls. This time I used up the yarn left over from DD's vest. I made items I had knit before. The dress knit up fine but the coat was a beast. It was suppose to fit the slim dolls but somehow it came out huge. I knit to gauge so am not sure what happened.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2XQpVMqJ31w9app9ykhueafKg-n9awEBzZV2oDn9aoe5mg3w_TGuJODd-JbsYlvavD-5tq-I-G1PSCBV1Xo78BKAnFbyBpJ7YeysZOWZzNQN2EmmvbBzL4hlV9_YHxqiWwB-bolODSV46HC1h9CByPDBF3UsDU86aqCAeX2fWM_k7H5eye2h8/w300-h400/IMG_3308.jpeg)

I have started to knit myself a vest so doll knitting has been set aside for now. I also need to knit DGS a pair of wool socks for Christmas. I need to find yarn for them as I need 2 skeins for his and DDIL's socks.
