Title: Augusts BOM - Bears Claw and Maple Leaf
Post by: Iminei on August 01, 2020, 10:34:02 AM
Summer is well on its way to over

and again we have a TWO Part Block of the Month ...

Both blocks are similar and use techniques you already know,

Remember, for the eager beavers amongst us, that all these blocks need to be  layered and quilted ready to assemble in the Autumn.

Tutorials for the various techniques are available in The Darkside Tutorial thread

Do read right through the AUGUST's BOM before you start!!!

So without further ado ...

Here we are at the SEVENTH BOM month of the 2020!

AUGUST's BOM (https://photos.app.goo.gl/JBRFRQsypXapdhvQ8)

There will be a minimum of Twelve 12" blocks for this years BOM:
Some months you will have two blocks to make and some only one.

In October I will guide you through layering and quilting your blocks
and in November I will take you through  assembling them, using a QAYG method,
into a fabulous lap or cot sized quilt (or even a series of comfy cushions.)

And everyone who finishes the year with a completed quilt (or full series of cushions)
will receive an exclusive The Sewing Place Prize Winners Badge or Sew on Patch

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I have chosen a monochrome theme with pops of colour for my quilt,
you may choose whatever colourway/theme you like ...
Brights, plains, patterns, pastels, neutrals ... the choice is yours!

As ever when you click on the link, select the first picture,
and click on the i icon to bring up the destructions
on the right side of your screen.

Do read through The Basic Basics Thread before you start.

Please post pics of your blocks each month and by the end of the year we will have a fantastic album for the archives

*Ahem*....I'm busy assembling the backing for my temperature quilt   and I'm hand stitching a label to go on the back.  :)
I've just stopped to have breakfast. I've only got my surname to stitch and that bit'll be done.

I managed to get the first one done, in between my sister whatsapping me all afternoon, and my bedridden friend phoning me to go and help her. Which I did of course, although when I got there there was no problem apart from her wanting a cigarette. Hopefully I'll get the second one done in peace tomorrow, but I'm not counting on it.  -<
Oh, and I still hate scant quarter inch seams. The block turned out a scant 12 1/2 inches though, so not too bad.  :D

I've done the bear foot one - bloomin' ker-nackered after all that measuring and trimming - but nipped off a couple of points  :(  Have re-stitched but too weary and cross-eyed to unpick the titchy stitching at the moment!

Have you remembered yet, @wrenkins  ;)

Here's the first August one. It seemed a bit tricky-dicky and all that trimming has made my neck-ache much worse. May need to visit the chiropractor before tackling no.2  -<

I have introduced a new fabric this month. The lovely batik raindrops were going to be used but, from previous experience, I know that a one-direction design is a bit of a nightmare in HSTs and QSTs so went for something that could be any way round so as not to waste the raindrop fabric. I'm quite pleased with it especially as it was a bit of a punt a considered choice when I was shopping for a different project.

I've nearly finished the Maple Leaf - it's a right old slog, especially in this heat. I have the appointment with chiropractor on Tuesday  :[

The Pfaff foot control is still not working properly and the chap didn't return the power cable so I had to half-inch the one off the radio. I shall be Having Words   :S

I think I need a cupboardful of Garibaldis after this one. 60 bits just for one block  :faints: Safe to say I shan't be making this one ever again!  And the bloomin' thing's turned out 13" square  :S

I've learnt that lesson the hard way, @Lowena  ;)

Tbh I would probably have left it but I can't do any actual quilting until my Pfaff is properly sorted out - the chap who repaired it is going to order a new foot-controller as the repair he did has only improved things a little.

My plans changed today. I found it was far too hot to stay in the greenhouse this morning so I went into my sewing room instead and finished my first block for August. It was lovely and cool in there. :)
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Had to piece each of the 4 1/2" squares as I'm rapidly running out of fabric. I did order more white and green from a new-to-me online shop - Eclectic Maker. Ordered Wednesday evening, delivered Friday morning - excellent service. :D Unfortunately the purple I ordered turned out to be plum. :S Not their fault - it's difficult to tell on the screen.

That's lovely @Kenora . I know what you mean about on screen colour.  I've never received the colour I thought I was getting when ordering on line. Unfortunately it's often the only way to get anything even close to what you need.

I've made a start on both of my blocks for this month.  :)
This morning I was cutting my pieces down to size when I sliced into my thumbnail with the rotary cutter. It just broke through the nail and there wasn't much blood.
Serves me right for leaving my thumb sticking out when the cutter's heading in that direction.
This is the opposite thumb to the one I sliced into with the freak accident from the sellotape dispenser.

Honestly, I don't know what's wrong with me lately.

These are all lovely, I think I am now officially out of this, I have done a few of the blocks but unfortunately don’t have the right fabrics for some of them, most of what I started with is in jelly rolls and I found it difficult to find the right fabric to blend in without spending a fortune.

I will carry on with the ones I have made and maybe one or two more from the remaining fabric, I would love to try the quilt as you go method of joining and the actual quilting.

Do you think if I do 4 blocks and quilt them @Iminei  it would be possible to try your quilt as you go method or do I need more, I could probable repeat the ones that will work with 2 1/2 inch strips if necessary.

@Celia - you could try joining some of your jelly roll strips to make wider pieces of fabric - that's what I had to do in several places. Your work is so lovely (as I've seen first hand) that it would be a shame to stop now.

   Who indeed, @Bjay

I have just re-done February's Log Cabin BOM as it was too small due to my failure to read the instructions properly. Looks exactly the same as the other only bigger. I wanted to use in in the QAYG project and it would have looked silly with extra bits round the edges.

Post by: Bjay on August 18, 2020, 18:16:29 PM
Don't you think, Flo, it's the fact that we have all improved so much (well I know i have)
I was going to unpick the checkerboard one but I think I will just not use it now, hopefully there will be enough of the others.

My tumbling blocks is smaller but I think I can manage that when we join them together, we shall see

Title: Re: Augusts BOM
Post by: Iminei on August 18, 2020, 19:51:17 PM
Indeed we have all improved over the months, with accuracy of cutting and sewing and skill ... and I include myself in that.
In fact the Log Cabin, absolutely not my favourite block, I made smaller than it should have been because of limited fabrics... I have since revisited it and completed the full 12 1/2" ... apologies for that ...

They'd have been much nicer in different fabrics.

@Sandra - I love your colours - they're so bright and cheerful. They make me smile. :)

I finished the second August block yesterday afternoon, but only after unpicking it a couple of times! It just wouldn't behave. :S It's probably the worst block I've made - it just wouldn't stay "steamrollered".
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I think one of the problems is that I ran out of the white and had to order more. I originally bought it from my local shop but they were out of stock. The only place I could find it was in Worthing, so I ordered from there. It looked fine when I received it so I washed it (which I don't usually do) but when it was dry I just couldn't get the creases out of it. It's definitely the same fabric because I ordered by its reference number, but, looking more closely, it's not even exactly the same shade of white either. The original fabric was a blue-white, this one is a cream-white. It also feels slightly heavier and not as smooth. I'm being fussy, aren't I? However, I now have nearly a metre left which I have to use, and I'm not going to enjoy it. :S

@Kenora and @Sandra yet another triumph!  :loveit:
Kenora I ordered some lovely white to finish up my place mats. It was kingfisher brand WW**** something. It was a flippin' nightmare to iron! I've ended up ordering some similar p,cotton to back them as they will definitely need to be washable.

Post by: Kenora on August 20, 2020, 14:04:34 PM

@Celia

I have a few bags of scraps laying around. I was just about to ask how much fabric you would need for one of these.

And to the rest of you, (specifically @Iminei and @wrenkins ) I was never here!

I was merely reading through a thread at random, admiring all your lovely handiworks and perhaps offering a fellow forum member some help by way of fabric.

:)

@TartanPaint Thank you so much for your kind offer, I think I will carry on as I am at the moment as I have decided to sort of deviate  and use some of the fabrics I have to make log cabin blocks for the embroidered cats to go with, the pickies are in my post about my dabble into the dark side, sorry don’t know how to link posts.

I have sandwiched all but one of my blocks (I ran out of wadding - more is coming).  As I cut one of the pieces of wadding to size I thought 'that felt a bit thick...' and discovered that the wadding had pulled the top block onto my cutting board and I had just sliced a couple of inches into a bear's claw.   :'(  Luckily it was just one of the large corner squares, and I just had enough fabric left to replace that bit.

I have no inspiration whatsoever for the actual quilting, although I am quite looking forward to doing it.

This delicate flower spits out it's bobbin thread for no reason and only occasionally just to keep you on your toes. It balks at anything over four layers and sits in one spot stamping it's foot. I'm gonna give it a good slap one of these days.

I'm happy as a happy person to get loads of my blocks quilted although when left to our own devices (mistake) I went mad and kept cutting and sticking and now I'm looking at my intricate masterpiece and thinking 'now what?'

What's everyone doing with their bare feet? (see what I did?).   :[

No idea.  I'm totally inspirationless.

I'm going to go and wind my quilting thread onto a bobbin.  Then I really will have done absolutely everything I can without actually quilting anything.

Excellent idea. I'll do that too. I used three today.

Do I need special thread for quilting? I've only used ordinary sewing thread up until now.

No, you don't need anything special @Flobear but some people choose to use variagated or other odd threads

I use a heavier thread than a standard sewing thread, but there's no reason why you have to.

They're all done except my churn dash.  :faints: Oh my neck!  :S
I got all carried away on a couple of them. I was liking it.

I made my churn dash up and din like it so I took it apart and put it back together differently. Not a fan of that either now.

@Flobear try a 40wt cotton. 50wt will do if that's all you have. Make sure the same weight is in bobbin and spool.

In an effort to get on the right side of QAYG (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOM2_MTg8QwYK2e3L-WUxSil1zX8vkV2PNW2cHTY12yZTQnqAfHDN0jqGETZz5Nlw?key=TmpmOC1uSWtFNkNNc1lRTVhfckc5YmxhTm1VSjJB) I read through tutorial and it turns out I  have done too much quilting.  :faints: All those wee half inches round the outside are going to be hidden behind sashing. I would like to point out that that is where I did my finest work and the bit in the middle is just ordinary. Just sayin'.

I've cut a whole stack of sashing but I suspect it still isn't enough. I've also quilted and trimmed every single block and have a nice tidy heap of things sitting on my ironing board.

I AM READY!

Bring on whatever shenanigans you have devised for September missy!

I do hope you've put those (already fraying) strips away somewhere safe where they cant be moved/touched/or even breathed on ...

I admire your preparedness ... Just wait til you see what Septembers last blocks bring to you!

I am up to date!!! (Well, with making them... haven't started quilting yet...)

I have enjoyed the August ones, even though there has been a lot of work.  And pressing.

Then you are completely up to date @Acorn as October is the designated month for Layering and Quilting!

Run along and see if you can find a last glass of fizz ...  Hic!

Ooer. I'm all previous. My layering and (baaaad) quilting is all done and I have a very tasty looking lasagne sitting ready for sashing. I thought we were supposed to do it as we went along.
I'm never previous!  :faints:

Yes, I did say that if you were at a loose end you could layer and quilt, theres nothing wrong with being up to date or prepared ... It just means that October will be a really easy month for you.

You could redo any you're not happy with ...
Add another version on the June challenge
or as you said
Make another scrap buster using just ONE shape

Im really hoping you havent trimmed them down tho'
Title: Re: Augusts BOM
Post by: Acorn on September 10, 2020, 10:00:25 AM
Not since the trimming to 12.5" after piecing, with the backing and wadding also cut to 12.5".  Actually most of the blocks are slightly short of that, but I guess that if they're all short there's not too much of a problem.

You didnt have any trouble with creep when you quilted then ???

You shouldnt really in something that small ...
but generally we cut the wadding a lil larger and the backing larger than that to allow for any creep.
Title: Re: Augusts BOM
Post by: Acorn on September 10, 2020, 10:26:41 AM
Not entirely sure what creep is, but on the quilted blocks the wadding and backing stick out beyond the blocks, with the wadding generally the largest - not always by a lot, but consistently.

I remember saying that I was just going to dip in and out of this year's BOM but I appear to have made 11 blocks.  One more to go.
