Technical Help / Re: Finding the right zip
« on: February 23, 2024, 17:19:54 PM »
@sewmuchmore thank you for looking. I am struggling to find something that looks to be light enough. I have found size 3 open ended at Kleins but they only offer 39” length and cost lots of money for a zip which then has to be cut down.

@BrendaP thank you for your reply. I have just gone down another rabbit hole :)
So many different types of zips.

@sewmuchmore thank you for your reply and the explanation about identifying the weight. Thank you also for offering to see if you have something suitable. I measured it about 39cm and the current zip is black although the outer fabric colour is red.

Technical Help / Finding the right zip
« on: February 22, 2024, 16:41:09 PM »
Help needed please. My daughter has asked me to replace a zip in a cycling top. This is an open zip fitted to the inner mesh liner and feels very light weight so it doesn’t distort the mesh which has a slight stretch.
I have been looking online but am finding it hard to judge the weight of the zips shown.
Any advice/ suggestions gratefully received.

Sewing Machines / Re: Machine for my Mum
« on: January 20, 2024, 14:51:04 PM »
Hi @AnthonyExmouth  I have experience of buying from  Exeter Sewing Machine centre @exetersewing.co.uk having bought a sewing machine and overlocker over the years. They do sometimes have used machines for sale too.  I would encourage visiting the shop and trying a variety of machines but also keep in mind what it will be used for. A lot of money can be spent on features that won’t be used. A local store is also helpful for servicing and repairs. Good luck.

I forgot to say it is the Navy check. The last picture on the listing shows the colour.

I bought the navy version of this earlier in the week when I visited the Oxford store. It wouldn’t have appealed just looking at it online though.

I hope the link works. The fabric is not very heavy but I think it will work well for layering underneath as well as with a cardigan over the top. Thick tights and and chunky boots too.

@Kwaaked  thank you for your comments. I’m still considering (prevaricating more like). I miss being able to go somewhere and handle items.

@Ploshkin @Surest1tch @So Chic, thank you for your replies. I will look at the Prosharp site, I’m not sure I would have found it without your prompting.

@Mick thank you for your response, I suspect I will probably end up adding some padding to the handle for support as well.

Time to make a decision.

Thank you for all your replies.

@So Chic @Surest1tch  I have looked at Kai, the products I am finding are badged Prym Kai scissors. Are these the ones you have?

@SewRuthieSews @Ouryve  I am looking for a pair of shears because I want to be able to keep them down on the cutting surface, hopefully reducing the weight on my hand a bit. I never do multiple project cutting out sessions.

I like that the weight is included on the William Whiteley site.

OH is offering to buy me some scissors as a birthday present, and I am considering a pair of shears for cutting my fabric, I am more likely to try to make clothing or simple homeware than quilting.
I have a pair of Fiskars standard scissors but like the idea of shears. Oh, I have some arthritis in my cutting hand too.
Has anyone experience of buying from/using scissors from William Whiteley please?
Thank you

Sewing Machines / Re: Pfaff Select 3.00 advice please

Thank you for your replies.

@toileandtrouble  yes, I will be seeing the owner and will ask that she demonstrates it for me if she can. Don’t think I will be able to have a go under current circumstances. She has moved on to other crafts now.

@Efemera & @Gernella  My mum had a 122E back in the late 70s, one of the first with IDT I think and it came to me after she died in the early 80’s. I used it occasionally and really liked it but family life got in the way and it spent 15 years in the loft. By the time I got it out again it was seized solid and the service engineer who looked at it said the plastic components had deteriorated and it wasn’t repairable. I was just a bit sad :'(   I bought a Toyota machine shortly after and it’s ok and then 3 or 4 years ago I bought a Janome QXL605. That is just more complicated than I need. I’ve been thinking about getting another Pfaff and this one has come up.

With a bit of practice I will be fine. I don’t need needle threaders, needle up/down thingies etc. I learnt the old school way  :D
