Groovy, baby! Smashing tops, Jessie.

  Very 60's is what I thought.  And yes I remember those days!

Welcome to TSP.
I think dressmakers particularly are critical of their makes and always striving for perfection.  Just look at your RTW clothes for a reality check concerning fit.  I bet yours are better!   :)

@Lemon Syllabub perfection would be nice wouldn’t it?   :)  I have to say what you’ve ended up with looks really great.  Sewing the elastic down makes a huge difference as it flattens the excess.  Without the extra rows of stitching you get a distorted view of what it will be like.

I never wear my tops tucked in so it doesn’t matter too much.   I need the excess that elasticated waists create or I can’t sit down!      There is always a trade off between looking sleek when standing and being able to sit down comfortably.  Folks who are nice and slim don’t have quite the same problem.

I’d also recommend a fitting shell however you do it.  A bought pattern is a good starter place.  It may take a while to get it right but it would very useful for adjusting other patterns.  It might also save some money because you could use it and adapt it to other styles yourself!

Good luck on your trouser journey.

Look pretty good to me.  Not quite sure what you’re expecting from an elasticated  waist pattern.  There will always be excess. if there wasn’t you would need some way of getting in them or a fabric that stretched.

Fun with Fabric / Re: FabricFlop - Advice Needed

If it was me first I’d throw it in the washing machine and see what happens.  Then steam if that doesn’t work.

Hopefully not all of them.  I sometimes use the Winchester and Chichester ones but not always impressed with them.  They can be expensive.  But I don’t like to see any fabric shops closing.

Looks stunning.

@Lemon Syllabub I don’t  think the wide elastic helps.   :(

@Lemon Syllabub ive just had another look at the website.  The elastic is sewn over after being inserted. That will flatten the elastic somewhat and make it look neater.  Also, I assume up your toile is made in a crisp fabric.  If these were made in a soft drapey fabric the gathers would appear different.

I agree with @Puzzler about elastic at the sides.  It’s quite a neat solution.  I’ve made several pairs like that.

If you’ve got a pants pattern that works for you I’d use it.  There’s nothing particularly special about this pattern.
