Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Embroidered cards
« on: November 05, 2021, 18:26:12 PM »
@Diane , if you want it & can afford it, why not? If you don't use it much you'll get a good price back for it but I'm betting you'll love it. I don't use the embroidery side of mine as much as I did when I first got it, but wouldn't be without it. I had a standalone Janome 350e first but space is tight so upgraded the sewing machine to a Pfaff with embroidery unit & sold the 350e. Get as big a hoop size as you can - small designs can still be stitched in a big hoop.

@Diane you can't take it with you! If it helps (I also feel the need to justify big purchases) it will have a healthy resale value.

@Bodgeitandscarper  those cards are lovely.

In the wardrobe / Re: Adjustable mannequin

I have a polystyrene one which I padded out to my measurements. She's been in the loft most of this year, I just try on as I go. I have used her for a draped dress, & for fitted things in woven fabric she comes in handy but lately I've been using stretch fabrics which are more forgiving, and simple patterns. Since I don't make for others I didn't see the point of an adjustable one.

That card is fab @Bodgeitandscarper . Do you need a particular type of needle? Standard card?

A local charity shop used to take all my scraps for pulping but that stopped a couple of years ago. I compost the little bits, only hoarding pieces at least a handspan wide. I still have too many of them  :scream: @SewRuthieSews posted some great ideas on here, I like the cards & may try making 'fabric' for a bag.

Thanks @Ohsewsimple. Next time I use the big hoop I'll try them both - if I remember! Sometimes I get a bit of bounce in the centre of the big hoop, maybe it'll help avoid that. I've dealt with it by winding the bobbin with embroidery thread (rather than bobbinfill) so that any bobbin thread that gets pulled to the top Is invisible.

Embroidery and Embellishment / What's this sticky fluffy stuff?

I've had my machine (Pfaff Creative 3) for ages. I've just (re) discovered this pack which came with the embroidery module. There are clips, which I think I've finally worked out fit on the hoop like this:  though I'm not sure why I'd need them? And this slightly sticky, fluffy stuff which looks a bit like thick stabiliser but which is cut to fit over the large hoop.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  Does anyone have any idea what it's for? I wondered whether it was to cushion the edges of delicate fabric when hooping?

Very exciting @ScubaGirl . Enjoy it! Do you get half term out there? In the UK it's next week.

The 1034 is a good workhorse, if you got a lightly used second hand one it could be a good deal. I replaced mine with the 4234 which has needle threading and the lower looper is easier to thread too. It also has adjustable stitch width. I've not used any other brand but have been very happy with both of them.

Thanks for that list @ScubaGirl  the Windflower looks interesting, I have a Burda that I think could look similar with an asymmetric hem and a grafted on cowl. I'll add it to my never ending list  :)

@Bumblebuncher I didn't know I needed an embroidery machine, had never heard of overlocker or coverstitching until I joined the previous forum.
