Hi, I'm new... / Re: Hi, I’ve just joined the forum.

Hello @Clduk  and welcome to TSP

I too have been sewing for a very long time and after buying lots of online polyester bargains during lockdown times I am now trying to reduce the amount of synthetics in my wardrobe.

Unfortunately nowadays most of us have to shop for fabric online - and from here in the south east the general impression is that the few bricks and mortar shops that do still exist are up north!

It used to be; buy your pattern and then wander around the fabric shops to choose something suitable.  Now it's; order some fabric online and take a guess as to how much you might need and then sort through the pattern stash to find something suitable.   :S

A few of the online shops that I've used include:

The number refers to the width, in mm, of the chain part when it is closed.  Size 3 is 3mm, size 5 is 5mm and so on.

There are so many different types of zips around now, but you probably want a YKK Soflex
https://ykkdigitalshowroom.com/en/item/325?closePath=%2Fen%2Fapplication%2F1 for the stretch element.

Have a wander around the YKK website
https://www.ykkfastening.com/
to see what's available.

I've made the wonky railfence blocks - 62 of them plus 2 corner blocks - and I've started making the crumb pieces - it's messy job with lots of trimming because you have to have straight edges to join together.

@BrendaP I really like that rail fence one, don’t think I have enough scraps

You called ?????
@Iminei
It's @Celia who's not sure about having enough scraps.  I definitely do have plenty of them!

This is my pattern

Using an 8.5 inch square ruler (as was used in the video and which I happen to have) it will be single bed size.
Doing it 'wonky' is so easy, just plonk the ruler on and cut, no careful positioning, and any length that's 9 inches or longer.  The bigger cut off bits will go into the crumb blocks.

Yesterday I cut a bunch of strips from stash - I'm with Ellabella in not buying anything other than maybe wadding.
The plan in mostly blues/greens with a few bits of pink for the rail fence and mostly pinks for the crumb blocks.  There will probably be white/cream borders between the sections which will need a bit of juggling on sizes of a few blocks - but it will be wonky so not a problem!

I've been getting quite pally Google and YouTube looking for ideas.

At the moment I'm thinking of wonky rail fence with a border of crumb blocks.

I've been thinking about this - it might be what helps me to find the sewing mojo again.  I need someting that's creative but not too challenging.

Fun with Fabric / Re: Ideas of what to sew with this stretchy sheer fabric
« on: February 13, 2024, 16:57:04 PM »

Option 1 - a dress, not that I wear them much
Option 2 - a poloneck top and sheer cardiwrap thingy - more the sort of thing I actually wear

You have answered your own question - a top and a cardi-wrap thingie.

A lot of RTW tops in see throrugh fabrics come with toning or neutral camisole tops to wear underneath - presumably cheaper than making a lining, but if you are making a top and a cardi you could line the top but not the cardi.

@Gernella its still only £5.30 for 1000 metres!
However I have found this site which sells them individually.
https://www.marentcrafts.com/product/gutermann-thread-mara-120-spools-1000m/

Gütermann Mara 100 is the same as their SewAll, just bigger spools with a card tube inner rather than on a plastic spool.  Mara 120 is a little bit thinner.
Also available from Marent Crafts
