Well, @grndkntrl , if you're new at this and don't have a stash, I would say that sourcing fabrics from a charity shop would be an acceptable alternative. Perhaps @SewRuthieSews would like to ponder this with me.

I'm in the sewing room - first time in ages - trying to decide on colours for my Improvised quilt day. Off to Doughty's tomorrow!

Signing out for now as I don't want to get distracted  :)

Yes, it's definitely something like that. It also makes a difference if you're putting the edge of the binding level with the edge of the quilt or back from the edge. That's why I ended up doing a few practice goes.

It took me quite a bit of experimenting to work out how to do tidy mitres on my Stars quilt binding which was wider than a quarter inch. I need to have a think about the formula, as it were.

I was with you all in spirit but was getting on with my oh-so-slow painting task. Both sides of the 'easy' door now done. The 'difficult' one has 15 small panes of glass to paint round  :faints:

We had the same thing in the first home that Plosh's and my Mum stayed in @realale  :(

One afternoon we found when we went in that she had no clothes to put on and was still in her pyjamas. You had to go to the laundry room and rummage through rails and baskets to find missing items. It would have helped if they'd said before she went in that clothes should be robustly labelled not 'oh, biro on the label is fine'. Also if they had noticed that Mum's stuff was ending up in the room of a lady with a similar surname.

When searching for a permanent residence we made sure they had a decent system!

Thank you for contributions so far  :thumb: :thumb:

I will assemble a simple list when there more to add.

Good idea @WildAtlanticWay to be clear which are UK based.

A new member has asked the perennial question, where do you buy fabric online. As the previous thread was started in 2017 and getting very long, I think a refresh of this topic is due.

Please recommend any stores you think are good, for whatever reason, and if possible mention in general the types of fabric supplied. ie Quilting, dressmaking, upholstery, etc.

Many thanks  :thumb: :thumb:

Hello and welcome @Clduk .

I think quite a few of us who started sewing at an early age have had periods of not finding the time to do much at all but it's good to come back to it.

The question you ask is a fairly common one but I'm not sure that there's an up-to-date comprehensive list. I will check now and, if there isn't, I will start a special thread for this.

Like you, I miss being able to go into shops and browse fabrics, especially for clothing items.

Beware of falling into the abyss that is the Dark side. I came here to find help with my overlocker and a few months later had started my first quilt

@SewRuthieSews, you could have a look in charity shops for colours you want so it's still semi-scrappy but will be useful for the purpose you have in mind.

PS when did the little sewing machine icons appear on our avatar panels? Has @Mr Twingo been tiddling behind the scenes  ;)

Well, 'Warm and Cosies'  there are 11 days left for this comp. I do hope you're not being enticed away yet to the Dark side with the Scrappy Sewalong  ;)
