Title: Block of the Month - April - Arrowhead
Post by: Iminei on April 02, 2017, 11:25:13 AM
Ladies I hope you will forgive me for this.
As you know life has been extremely busy and chaotic chez Imineis what with administrating the forum and Imselfs desire to decorate which has left me with little time or clean and clear space to construct a new tut for Aprils block.

Some of you from the old place will have seen this tut appear late last year but as it is a beautiful and relatively simple block to make I hope you will bear with the repetition and enjoy the tut.

For April's block may I present Iminei's Arrowhead

https://goo.gl/photos/qoji5Ha8T37UsiPZ8 (https://goo.gl/photos/qoji5Ha8T37UsiPZ8)

This block works best with a patterned fabric and a plainer bender.

As ever click on the first pic to make it full page and you should find the destructions on the right hand side.
If they are not there click on the Info icon at the top of the right hand side and they should appear.

This was the block I used for my very first completed quilt top, The Opus (which I finished it last year)

Can I cheat and have my original from last time in the BOMHOF?  Then I won't have any excuses not to get on with my UFOs that I am working my way through.

Now don't make me send you to the Headmaster Plosh!!

If you want to, of course you can! but its such a super block that comes together so easily I thought you might like to.

At the momment Im trying to stop myself making another one!!
I could nail Imself into the lounge ...and throw everything in the way out of the back door and just...S E W !!! Ah bliss !

But I shan't; I have too much work to do trying to get things tidyish and clean and I did sneak in a lil workshop yesterday (Ooopps Smilie) so have got rid of the worst of the itch.

Done mine. Thought I'd try orange for this one.

It's been photographed against a slab in the back garden, (in case you thought I'd got manky looking flooring in my house).

I really like this block. It looks like there's such a lot to it...16 pieces!...but it's lovely to make.

Well I thought I would give this a go first BOM ever. I think I need to work on my ¼ " seams it has come out a bit smaller than the instructions - I spy a theme here my mystery quilt blocks were smaller as well 0_0

Nice, Didi.
I suppose there are a lot of seams in this one and you only need to lose a gnat's crochet on each one for it to add up.
I've got a ¼" foot for my Pfaff and it does a perfect scant ¼" seam which is lucky because I know not all of them do.

Marvellous Didi.....very pretty!

Do not sweat the measurements Girls....
Especially with this block as there are no points to cut off...
Make it 8" sq or 7 1/2" ....
as long as (if you making a quilt or hanging) the others are squared down to the same size.

Exactimondo about the seams Ploshkin... I don't have a 1/4 foot for this machine ( I did for the old one )  -<

I'm rubbish with rulers - never know where / how to place them to get the correct measurements to cut  :| I often end up having to cut lefthandedly  :| I think a 12.5" square ruler might help me... but.....who knows?

Yours is lovely, Plosh.  I think I suffer from fabric envy.

We probably all have fabric envy.  I love your batik and Vege's cherry fabric but I wouldn't have anything to go with them so I would have to get something else as well  :)

What I loved about this block is how easy it was to choose the fabrics.  I had three options and my daughter chose.

Choosing fabric is always easier than making the block, if cutting is involved  :D

No I find it harder to pick the fabric... the cutting is the easy part... the most expensive fabric I ever cut was a French corded lace that cost £150 per metre.. that was about 20 years ago it was for a wedding dress ..  I did check it a few times before I cut :D

Title: Re: Block of the Month - April
Post by: Lowena on April 05, 2017, 15:23:51 PM
I promised a progress report......well, I cut out 4 x 8" squares, ready to make 2 blocks.A lovely orange batik and a dark grey tone on tone.
I sewed them together as per instructions. I made the first cut......all going swimmingly well  :)
Then....absolute disaster!! The 2" cuts up and in would not work at all  :'( Each time I tried I ended up with the pieces joined down the middle ( as they should be ) but also joined along the top / bottom  :'(
In the end I tried 4 times I ruined my original 4 squares of lovely fabric as well as 4 squares of less interesting fabric. Each time I thought I had cracked it, and each time it was joined down the middle and at one end :'(
Suffice to say, that's one block I won't be making.
Good news D.O.B. I remembered about the ruler and my measuring and cutting were spot on :D so, in the vein of "always celebrate your achievements".....cheers to ruler work  :toast:  :D

Awwww bless you Lowena  <3 So now are you going to put the ...  um experiments ... in the bin or use them as the start of one of those slab quilts for charity that were featured on another thread?  :)

I copied out the instructions yesterday but haven't tried it yet on account of still being confined to barracks waiting for that delivery! I shall know now to be extra vigilent. The 'there may be trouble ahead' song was going through my head as I carefully drew the diagrams  ;)

About rulers. Well I can work out how to use them but the process;  ah now that's a different thing. Slipping is my problem. I've tried the non slip ones and the various things you can stick on to make them non slip with some success, so then that just leaves blunting the blade by managing to slice bits off the ruler

All those smug smiley faced people on the youtube demos happiliy slicing away, through several layers even ... flipping the ruler over to avoid having to cut left handed, flipping the pile of fabric over and still keeping the cut edges level ....... make me sick!!

  0_0 0_0 0_0 0_0 0_0 0_0 0_0 0_0 0_0

Title: Re: Block of the Month - April
Post by: Iminei on April 05, 2017, 18:38:58 PM
Okay Low, and any others experiencing the same problem!

There is only ONE mistake you can make with the cutting out of this block....

and that is cutting diagonally through  the UNSEWN corners of the squares,

If that happens, just sew the corners shut and unpick 2" from the sewn corners.

Low, I wish, wish, wish we lived nearer..
I would come and walk you through this, it really is the most simple block to make...Please try again.

It is hard to cut through more than 4 stacked fabrics at once, even with a sharp new blade. You shouldn't have to flip things over - ruler or fabric. Doing your cutting on a table that you can walk round will eliminate the need.

I remembered about the ruler and my measuring and cutting were spot on

Well done, Lowena! You see, you can do it really. Did you bin the hat too?

Certainly have DOB
You're obviously cleverer than me Veggie....I'm not wasting any more time on the b****y thing
Imi, I did the diagonal cut fine....it's the chopping the 2" bits off the resultant triangles that I just couldn't do. I've just looked again at the instructions and I still don't get it  :( I think I cut in the correct places but still get an extra sewn bit on the arrow parts  -<
Never mind, even though I've only managed January's  :| it's onward and upward.........there's always May  :D

It is much worse than it looks on the photo. I measured, cut and sewed impeccably ( to show I'm not a numpty ) But, despite several unpickings and tweakings,  the seams still do not match up.

Well I like it and if you look closely at pictures in books not all the "matchings" are perfect, so give yourself a pat on the back. At least you had a go and if it were to go in a quilt, once quilted no-one would notice. :flower: :flower:
Title: Re: Block of the Month - April
Post by: Iminei on April 10, 2017, 08:49:10 AM
You have always said that you have trouble cutting haven't you Low???

And you must have cut these with a ruler and RC, yes?

Do you have the sandpaper dots that I sent you on the underneath of your ruler??

Because what I can see is a wonky cut, which if sewed back to the piece it had been cut from would've matched
but you probably separated the bits up and got them out of order...which is fine if cut straight.

Now Quilty was looking for a specific ruler at one years FoQ, where you place the RC in slots in the ruler to give perfect cuts .....

Was it the Shape cut Quilty ???

http://www.quiltdirect.co.uk/acatalog/JT797.html#SID=439 (http://www.quiltdirect.co.uk/acatalog/JT797.html#SID=439)

or Truecut ??

https://www.sewandso.co.uk/product/truecut-ruler-track-6-5-x-12-5-inch/701204?gclid=CjwKEAjw2qzHBRChloWxgoXDpyASJAB01Io0uofj4tuKX7c7ZumgfNkwO6TcoxEb53SsUbgm9XETPBoCunHw_wcB (https://www.sewandso.co.uk/product/truecut-ruler-track-6-5-x-12-5-inch/701204?gclid=CjwKEAjw2qzHBRChloWxgoXDpyASJAB01Io0uofj4tuKX7c7ZumgfNkwO6TcoxEb53SsUbgm9XETPBoCunHw_wcB)

I think that might be the problem Low... Do you have a ruler where your RC actually sits inside a track as it were?
Any how, never mind, Im just so pleased you sat down and tried and again apologies for your upset and frustration.
Title: Re: Block of the Month - April
Post by: Lowena on April 10, 2017, 10:06:25 AM
No need for you to apologise Im, it's me who's the numpty  :| Yes, I have the shape cut ruler ( with the slits ) and I have the sandpaper dots...so... that must prove something about me  :D ( and no, I haven't got my negative hat on - I can laugh about it )  :D
Truth be told ( whispers..) I don't like the look of that block anyway, so I probably wouldn't have made any more in the future  ;)

You're quite right Lanty, the dark side indeedy  Hope you got the mystery sorted out  <3

Oh I like my new nickname!  :)

I forgot to mention that I dropped the iron on the floor ... no that's not quite true ...... the iron jumped off the table when my back was turned and although I picked it up right away had started to melt the carpet! So had to stop to clean the iron. Not my day!

Well I like it and if you look closely at pictures in books not all the "matchings" are perfect, so give yourself a pat on the back. At least you had a go and if it were to go in a quilt, once quilted no-one would notice. :flower: :flower:

Maliw is quite right, I've been making a point (pun intended) of noticing! So have a back pat from me as well.

I see Im has identified the problem I'd been wondering about getting one of those slotted rulers as I also have trouble using rotary cutters, however I got one of these instead :-

https://www.barnyarns.co.uk/quliters-slidelock-14-35cm-arctic-ice.html

Expensive but I waited for the sale and bought it as I was so fed up of the ruler slipping while I was making the Kaleido blocks. They demonstrate the large one for cutting strips but I went for the smaller one as being more convenient to use for smaller cuts. I measure with the ruler slide this up to it and then cut. Being thicker it also stops my other trick of slicing onto the ruler! {I wished I'd got the larger one when Im instructed us to cut strips :[ }

L :vintage:

PS I see I have a record of what the carpet looked like before it got an iron shape melted into it. Decided to see it as a fashion statement ... all sewing room carpets should have iron shapes burnt into them!

Lanty.. 0_0 .. have you any spare carpet... I turned on the wrong plug and wondered what the smell of burning was... I had a perfect iron shape on my carpet I cut it out with a scalpel knife and used it to cut a new piece put a few bits of double sided tape underneath  and voila a perfect mend I hoovered over it yesterday you'd never know...
At This point I should mention the oil stain on the other side of the room... the oil filled radiator leaked... I just ignore it

Lanty, what's the attached piccy of???
Errant block is now in the bin......no reminder of  block for me ( and I still can't see the resemblance to an arrow head  :P )
Is the burn in a visible place Lanty? Have you got a rug?

Lantana, what is that fabulous looking quilt that you have surreptitiously tacked on to your post without a mention?

Thankyou for liking it Ploshkin,

Well I did sort of mention it .... these are the kaleido blocks that I was having trouble with cutting on account of slippage that led me to try the slidelock thingy. The photo doesn't seem to show up the flaws as much as in real life.  :)

I'd spent ages on e-bay getting enough fq's of the animals fabric. I'd only done a few blocks while I was still living in Wales and only got going on it again recently. I've decided to make it bigger possibly a quillow for my son. Obviously no chance of getting more fabric so am making foundation pieced animals from 'A quilter's Ark' by Margaret Rolfe to make more blocks and then will fill in with all the scraps generated by the fussy cutting of the original fabric.

Sorry Iminei to be putting non BOM pictures on this thread. My BOM is finished just not taken the piccy yet.

Vegegrow I'm glad I'm not the only iron-arsonist on this forum! The only bit of spare carpet is being used as the doormat so is in an even worse state!

So Lowena rug it will have to be!

Oil filled rads can leak Veg? oh eck I've also got one on the other side of the room but so far it's not had any leakage!

As Nelson might have said ( had he been a quilter ) I see no slippage  :D

What a lovely lil quiltet Lanty... Beautiful!

and that slidelock thing seems like a very useful device to have...

It seems to be part straight edge, part glass fixer thingymy with suction cups (?) going through to the fabric???
Does it really work ???
Maybe you could put a review of the Slidelock thing in the habby section, Im sure a lot of peeps would be interested.

Get your BOM up on here Lanty so we can get this thread back on track...

Yes I'd been wondering if enough people woud be interested for me to post a review ... had fully intended to do it this evening after having seen your comment at lunch time. Ditto putting up the pic of my block (also my strata) ..... however have just fallen asleep (yet again!) at the puter so I'm going to have to leave it till the morning as I don't want to wake up too much  :)

Thanks for your kind comments re the quiltlet (aka WIP)

I'm in the process of making another Arrowhead but just like the first having trouble matching the corners when attaching the final two pieces. It's an intriguing block isn't it? I can see that making them, once the technique has been perfected, could be very soothing and addictive.  <3

Night night ..... hope things are getting sorted in your household  :)

I loved the April B.O.M. so I have a lot of 6" squares and decided after doing Aprils block to attempt to scale it down for a 6" block -  this is the result:  I love it! :-)

Sorry the photo is a bit out of focus.

Hehe...  because it was a 6" block and that I had already done the 8" one, I didn't think it was permitted.  I am keeping a log of all the blocks I really like so that when I am ready to make a big quilt  -< I know what to look for.  I am still only a beginner but have practiced lots of techniques and only made small things like coasters.  A big learning curve for me.  Thanks iminei for inspiring me  :D

Here is mine.  I made it using left over fabrics from some cushions made for DD1 and I'm now wondering if I have enough to make borders for it and turn it into another cushion cover.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. They are much appreciated, as I tend to lack confidence. I had a go at the chinese lantern, which was ok but not perfect and I hated the colour I did it in, so I'm going to do it again in something more pleasing. I fancy making it bigger as well.   :toast: Here's to us all. :D

I decided to make 4 so as to turn it into something useful. Unfortunately I messed up on the cutting of one of them and had to use a different fabric. ........  I decided to check the potential of the block to be a scrappy quilt.

Enjoyed looking through the progress pics of your opus Iminei! I love those fabrics together (I think I've got fq's of them both in my stash :))  and the quilting is just a perfect compliment to the block. Is it hand quited or a machine stitch that is made to look like hand?
