Title: Block 3 - The CITRINE Star
Post by: Iminei on April 24, 2021, 12:56:03 PM

Welcome to the
Third  Mystery Quiltalongathon Block for 2021 ...

This year, after the great success of last years QAYG BOM,
I decided to combine the BOM with a finished article,

A Mystery Quiltalongathon !!

A BOM with an agenda !!!

but here's a clue, I've called it
The Sparkling Stars Quilt

I thought as Stars are so often referred to as Diamonds
I would assign a different Gemstone to each Block.
and try and convey a sense of that jewel with my choice of fabrics .......

You can follow my choice of gemstone for each star ...
or choose your own according to the fabrics you have to hand

So for the  THIRD BLOCK of
2021 Sparkling Stars Mystery Quiltalongathon

We have

The Citrine Star
The Citrine Star (https://photos.app.goo.gl/JpZw5zGyu2pvxwQC6)

As ever,
Click on the first pic to bring it up to Full size
and then on the i Icon
(top right corner of the pic on a laptop)
to bring up the instructions to the side of the pic.

 Do read right through the tutorial before you start to cut and sew !

Block FOUR will be released on Saturday 5th June ...

My, where has the year gone ?

*    *     *     *     *      *

There will be SIX Gemstone Blocks, posted at 6 weekly intervals
from the end of January to end of August,
giving you ample time to gather your fabrics and make your Stars!

You will need to make between FIVE and THREE Blocks for each Star.

The techniques used throughout the Sewalongs will be fairly simple
and there are Tut's available in The Darkside Tutorials should you need to refresh your memory.

This Mystery Quilt comprises a 5 by 5 grid of 12" (f) blocks
to make a finished quilt of 60" sq,
before any added borders or sashing.

You can of course make it smaller or even larger if you wish.

* * * Fabric Requirements * * *

This Mystery Quilt will require approximately 3m's of
ONE consistent background fabric throughout the quilt

and a different Gemstone colour each month ...
within which there will be between 3 - 6 different shades.

(I'm not so good at the Maths but a 1/4 metre or FQ of each gemstone colour/shade should be ample)

And everyone who finishes 2021 with a completed quilt
will receive an exclusive

The Sewing Places's
Prize Winners Enamel badge or Sew on Embroidered Patch!!!

I think mine be a peridot but I have fabric suitable for either

I can't start mine yet because I've had to pack up my sewing room for a few days. I also don't have the right fabric ..... YET!  :ninja: I tried my local sewing shop but everything I wanted was out of stock, so I surfed the net and found Hannah's Room. They specialise in batiks ... and .. WOW. :loveit: I am now many, many £'s lighter but anticipating a large parcel of gorgeousness to arrive on my doorstep in the next week or so. :)

Oooh...lovely work @fajita

I like this block.  :)
Lots of pieces to cut for it, therefore, more chances for inaccuracy when stitching all those seams together.  :[

Mine's a tiddly bit under 12.5" and it's a tiddly bit wonky.  :S It'll be fine.  ><
I'm pleased with my choices of fabric. They're a little bit brighter in real life.

Three more to go!
But not today.

Sandra.

Lovely blocks, ladies. :loveit: The colours really zing against the dark background. Haven't decided yet what colour to do mine against my white - I'm going to wait and see what inspires me when my parcel arrives. :D

Just a note to the unwary - FIVE of these blocks are needed.

@Iminei  Place your
2 1/2" Bg squares into the corner of the
4 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" D rectangles
RST and draw a diagonal line on the reverse as shown.

Your rectangle dimensions need to be corrected  DONE

 :headbang:
I am 2 rectangles short for the light fabric despite patchiing  bits to make some others. I knew it was cutting it a bit fine When @Iminei  showed so little left from a fat quarter so  I am going to have to use a completey different colour - yellow. It is very a very bright batik style yellow. I'll see how it goes.

@Bjay  in my light yellow I had to piece two scraps together to make the last rectangle. Thought it must be me being slapdash.

This evening I have cut for one block to sew tomorrow. Mine s in a yellowish but more like a fire opal which is one of my birthstones  :) pic will hopefully be posted tomorrow. If I sew it correctly the other four will follow  :vintage: :)

@Iminei
the bright green is the colour I've run out of and the yellow (not a true likeness) is what I have.
I am making a Peridot rather than a Citrine
(https://i.postimg.cc/DyNqtVDJ/IMG-20210427-111417-1.jpg)

thanks for offer  but not sure bright yellow batik will fit as it's for the light colour?

Rubbish colour reproduction!

This is my citrine star (fire opal) it's far from perfect but I have learned a lot from making the flying geese.  The next 4 blocks should be better.  I was unsure about the Light fabric but think I will keep it as is.  Oh, and the Booboo   :\

Block two already scared me off of the mystery quilt.  This one does too. I still have the nice backing fabric I bought so maybe I'll just do something else with it but still in the gem stone coloring.

@mudcat once the pieces are cut it goes together really quickly and easier than I first thought. It is a fun block to make and I am enjoying it.  I am still learning and managing to do it  :)
Title: Re: Block 3 - The CITRINE Star

@mudcat - the hardest part is cutting out the correct size pieces.

As Lilian says, once you've done that it will go together really easily. :)

Give it a go - you might be pleasantly surprised.

I must admit Block 2's fancy Flying Geese were a complete Mare ... To the extent that the original designer of this block changed the destructions mid way through to normal geese ...

So A Brilliant Big Bravo to all of those who have made them so beautifully ...

Myself I had 4 prototypes before going for the real thing!

But as you can see from the halfway pic I took, I hope you agree that its worth it.

Before I cut any pieces for Block 4 I am going to cut SIX Long LOF strips for the sashing and borders.

Finished the Citrine Blocks. It's not nearly such a  tricky one as Block Two - just a lot of bits.

The black spotty bits on the right are my socks seen through the glass top table!

Thank you @Catllar  for pointing that out ...

Thats beautiful, run along and join the others in the MQBOMHOF now, theres quite a party going on in there now!!!

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon cutting out the fabric for 3 of these blocks. I could hardly straighten up when I'd finished but at least I have all the pieces ready for sewing the next time I feel able. I'm probably going for a 5' x 4' quilt top, before borders, so am making three of each block to start with, and then I'll see how it goes. :)

I have nearly finished my fifth one for this star.  I want my quilt to be 6 x 4 before borders so the arrangement might be difficult  -<

I decided to make all five at one time rather than do a test first. Went well until near the end when I realised I had cut my centre squares 4 inch square. I’m looking forward to the next block. I’m going to have to order more background fabric.

I finally got round to more sewing on this block this afternoon - it's more than a fortnight since I cut out all the pieces! I got part way through and was then interrupted by the arrival of a four-legged, furry friend  :meow: who wanted to supervise me. Her idea of supervising was to investigate my iron (which was on, and in reach  :S ), try to nibble at the pins in the pincushion, and then settle down on my half-finished block. I did try to continue around her but it all started to go wrong so I decided to pack up and try again another day. :)
