I have finished piecing my top (https://photos.app.goo.gl/bQ6HKurMjyWR93fU6), adding 1" (f) sashing and cornerstones and a 2 1/2" (f) border
but you can assemble the top as you wish. Its your Quilt!

If you wanted to make a slightly larger rectangular quilt just make one more of blocks 2,3,4,5 and 6 and follow the pattern*

As you can see there are FIVE units for Blocks 1 and 3 so could be  can be interchanged and Blocks 2,4 and 6  have  FOUR units so you can change their positions too ....

The only Block that cant be moved is Block 5 which only has three units ... (unless that is you make another!!!)

Find the layout that please you best or make your own up!

Im not too happy with my border as I had to piece it to get the length
and had very lil background fabric to do it with so may yet have a play and add a lil detail.
I will update you here if I do.

* If interchanging the blocks and using a different placement to mine,
Look carefully at which five blocks you need to make.

I spent a lot of time placing and replacing blocks yesterday and almost came up with same design. Love the effect of the corner stones  :perfect10:
Now I think I will do something do similar but not until tomorrow

@Flobear , I've only done the first blocks (ruby), so if you want to join the stragglers group, you wouldn't be alone.

Having seen yours, @Iminei , I will certainly keep going.  Your quilt is gorgeous.  Absolutely breath-taking.

@Flobear - I'm in the stragglers group too!  :P I'm still struggling with the Sapphire block (I think - at least mine's sapphire) - I'm not keen on the thickness I get when I join the flying geese with the square in a square. I think that's why I rarely make this kind of block. -<

@Iminei - your pieced top is very eye-catching, and I love the little cornerstones.  :loveit:

Thank you to those who are in the Stragglers group, I might just make a start and see where it gets me. I would like something bright and vibrant to liven up the neutralnessness of the decor I inherited. Need to get the sewing room painted first so I can put it all back together. Would have started this afters but can't find most of my paintbrush stash - just the rollers and a few somewhat past-it bristly things.

@Lilian  as I (tried to) explain earlier .... because we have 3 sets of Four Blocks and 2 sets of Five, your quilt can be individual as where you choose to put your colours can vary to where Ive put mine ...

you can also of course throw the layout away and arrange as you wish but I do think it creates a nice effect.

Ive got to think about backing too, I always forget that a quilt needs a backing fabric ... Im wondering about piecing it with another block of each star ... we'll see ....

Very much looking forward to seeing all of yours made up!!!!

This is lovely and so clever. I was wondering how the three blocks would fit into the design. The cornerstones are fantastic.

I have decided on my layout and started cutting sashing so I can sew the blocks into rows. I’m going to have to revise how to do cornerstones.

Going through the block check list  seemed to be short of a block.
Rifled through my current sewing project box and there were the pieces for another Amethust block so am now doing thet. It is already half sewn - no idea what I was doing about that

Thanks @Iminei I do like the layout you have done, it's very effective.  I will try mine and see how they look.  I had decided to put cornerstones on each block, so I got that the same.  I would ideally like mine to fit small double bed (4ft) wide so I will see if I can adjust it to fit.  :)

Well the 5x5 comes out at 60" sq + 4" sashing +5" border = 69" sq.

If you add the extra row of 5 blocks you'll be looking at 72" x 60" plus any sashing and borders. (10" extra)

Spent some of the afternoon playing with blocks and patterns.
At the moment I am looking at a 6x4 block arrangement to come out as single bed size but it may well change over night :D
More fun tomorrow

That looks lovely! My first thought included  half plain blocks with the squares offset, but  kept coming up short with the 6 block. ANyway at the moment I have started quilting the BOOM baby so have no brain or space to play with this one  but I'm thinking hard

I have cut and sewn the sashing to one side of my blocks today. The cornerstones and the rest of the sashing will be done on Sunday.  I have changed the layout slightly and decided to go for a 6 x 4 blocks for the top, borders and binding added later.  :)

Mine's going to have to be put aside for now.

All of the blocks are done and I have enough (I think) of the background fabric for the sashing. It's easier to put it to one side in this state than to half-assemble it and to come back to it in the future and try to remember where I'd got to.

Sandra.

I started to make more blocks but didn't have enough fabric to complete them. I made one extra emerald block for the top. I now have two spare which I do intend to piece into the backing, if I can make one more block (fingers crossed) I think three on the back would be better.  :) I still need to get the wadding but not sure what weight is best.

Probably a heavier weight than I use here in DDD ... which is Autumn weight ... if you are going to use it that is.

Yesterday I snuggled up in the sofa with my friends star quilt  (https://photos.app.goo.gl/j6YveBhvHpXwaApN8)over me ... so there I was surrounded by all my TSP friends when I was feeling poorly !!!

Sorry I have no pics of the actual event.

I think autumn weight would be ok for me. I am going to use it on the bed as an extra layer. I don't heat my bedroom I like it cold with windows open all year round but I do like to be warm under the covers. What weight would be autumn weight?

That friends star quilt is gorgeous!

My quilt when it gets assembled will be made with what we made - no more - then I'll probably donate it for a Cancer charity that I support, they're always looking for raffle prizes.  I never know what to do with quilts. I have one on each of the guest beds but don't like them on mine - my bedroom is white and white with a touch of white. No place for coloured quilts there to disturb the zenitude  :meditation:

I hav e a couple of coloured wall quilts hung up.

Still undecided whether to do a 5x5 or a 4x6 but I have cut sashing as it wil be the same width whatever the final decison.

I think I will make another Emerald Block - that will give me more thinking time and if I don't use it it can go on the back. I already have a spare one which I sewed up with a wrong design

My cornerstones and sashing is now cut and sewn.

@Lilian  ... THAT is Beautiful ... such a fresh look with the white background! Brava Lilian!!!

You are like me, I have the bedroom window wide open all night every night unless a major hoolie is throwing rain in (It doesnt the wind blows across the front of the house, not toward it!)  and I never have the heating on ...

Autumn weight will be in the description of the wadding such as Empress Mills Kahtadin wadding (https://www.empressmills.co.uk/bosal-katahdin-cotton-wadding-autumn-96) which is what I prefer ...

I am however working my way through a full roll of wadding from a Doughtys roadshow (I will never have to buy wadding again) but EM's 3 metre offers are very good value and if I had no wadding this is what I would choose ....

Regarding quilting it .... If you are sashing your quilt you could QAYG it in 2, 3 or 4 more manageable pieces using the sashing strips as the joining strips.

There is a QAYG tutorial (https://photos.app.goo.gl/EC7CE1Uir5r2vGR2A) in the Darkside tutorial section and plenty of help online.

The only difference from the standard QAYG method, which typically uses 1" front joining strips on the front and 2" strips on the back, would be the width of your strips and to remember to allow a lil more wadding at the edge of the sections you are joining to avoid having an 'empty' gully between the joined sections.

Practice with a couple of wadded squares  (https://goo.gl/photos/bxFJsJMUvj6hT6as8)beforehand to get the idea of it before joining sections of the quilt.

Thanks @Iminei the background is a bit overblown on the photo, it is actually a tiny white flower on a cream background.

I have ordered the wadding as per your link  :)  I really want to try quilting it as one piece. I will use my singer 201k as it is a flatbed in its own table.  I will practice first on some spare block that I have.
My knees tremble at the thought  :faints:

SI have stared at rhe blocks I had put sashng on for a few days - just dind't like them. Then when in the other room where the yellow quilt is I thoughty narrow the sashing.
So unpicked what I had done - only 2 rows, recut the sashing to 1ins wide,  and I have now put sashing on the rows Does look better - less oppresive

I have laid out my blocks with the sashing and cornerstones. I hadn't given a thought to a border so am thinking about using some cornerstone sized squares, one for each outer block to match?

I am still unsure about the placement of the purple blocks, I think they stand out from the rest so am considering a different layout

The cream is the same as in all the others, I think sometimes the camera makes it look whiter.  I have changed the corner blocks to lighter colours but I don't know if there is enough contrast on the corners now.

Took around an hour to choose as the Hand dyed Grey background fabric is really tricky; its grey but its blue but its green .....

Sharon at Seahorse quilting was so helpful and so very patient and just about had the 4ms I needed on the bolt .... although the quilt actually measures 70"ish sq so about 1.8 ms ....

So Gorgeous!
If you have the fabrics make the new ones ... include the originals on the back

Do you want a label ???????

Does anyone want a label, courtesy of Elvistoo ??????

Wow @Iminei that background fabric is gorgeous!  Mine is quite boring in comparison.

at ££££ !!!!  but Ive stopped scrimping on the backing ... If its right, its right!
I tried desperately to select from the sale fabric but it would not wash!

If you look at the good quilt makers ... their backing is always superb ... dont get me wrong ... The Opus was backed with (a very nice quality) sheet but I put a lot of time and effort in the fronts of quilts and so .....

@Iminei I don't have enough of the other fabrics to make all new blocks, I am taking the old ones apart.  The one you see is just the four corners remade and laid on top of the previous blocks.  I must admit I really like the original ones and am sad to be changing them but I know they don't fit with the rest of them.   :)

EDIT: I would like a label please :)

I don't like the sashing. It doesn't seem to work. I was going to use the background fabric as the border but as can be seen I haven't enough to do both. Alternative is  redo sashing in BF and use a charcoal as block colour as the border.
I'm going backwards and forwards and I just not sure what to do.

I could of course leave it as it is

I’ve got a baby quilt to make so may not do much more on this one for a bit.

For me, that sashing works @Bjay, at least in the photo. The blocks are so vibrant that I think sashing that sits quietly in the background is a good choice.
Not sure what you have in mind for the binding, iirc you mentioned flanges, but that could be a bit more 'in-yer-face' if you wanted it to be.

Post by: Bjay on October 24, 2021, 17:44:23 PM
Thanks @Flobear . Over the afternoon decisions were made.

looking carefully at a couple of photos helped.

The grey will be the sashing, the border will be in the Bg fabric to link it all - no idea about the binding will have to see how it looks together but that is a long way off.

Fabulous Fabulous!!!

You could do something for the binding like I did for the 100 shades quilt? I saw the most Fabulous floral, very vivid and I knew I had to have it ...

It was too much, way way too much for a quilting fabric

I don't know whether to  or  :boohoo:

So today I plan to start making up the quilt. Discovered that one of my blocks is totally small and no point are neat and in short it looks a mess, so I'll remake it.  QAYG will be a first for me. There are many ways to do it so it seems so I'm going to see if I need any sashing first and then my plan is to make columns and then treat each column as a block. Would that work oh wise ones?

Not in a happy place at the mo! My lack of exactitude in piecing ( being of the "that'll do, it's near enough" school) has caught me up and I find have some extremely inaccurate blocks, so  I started unpicking quite a lot of them to restitch with better SAs. Once I'd unpicked a couple it dawned on me - why don't I just add a BG frame to get the correct sizes, so I'll have another go tomorrow - restitch my original ones and add some frames where necessary and this is leading me down another road that could include some half squares and offset blocks - so I'm making more work for myself. Sigh.

Yep thanks, @Iminei, I looked through the tutorial and also found some other methods care of mr google.

This topic has been very very quiet for the last few weeks.... So has anyone out there finished their Quilt yet???

I know I havent ... And I think I know the reason why ... As I came to finish up the borders I realised I didnt have enough of the background fabric .... that gorgeous hand dyed grey from Farne Fabrics who no longer trade!!! ... to finish it in one piece so I had to join scrips and scraps and I think Im unsatisfied with the result.

Dont get me wrong ... The borders are complete, the borders lie right and looks neat BUT ...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]        [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I was going to add some random HST's in the colours of the stars in the areas that were patched together but hadnt worked out the how and where ... BUT I will!

Looking at this fresh after a month or more Im now wondering whether or not to leave it as is ???

I was thinking about this and haven't finished mine. I will be taking a look today. I haven't done anything towards it for a while. I had some bad news last Monday, a dear friend of many years whom I loved passed away suddenly while on holiday for the festive season . This upset me immensely.

Life must go on so I am hoping to get mine finished in time.

@Iminei I have a problem with the border, I forgot about it, I irdered some fabric but it isn't the right shade  :\. So I may be using the binding fabric instead.

I think yours will be ok but I know what you mean. It will look ok when it's quilted I think :)

Looking at the border again, I think I might just let it go ... maybe a few words of embroidery on the lines ???
Who knows but its not as bad as I thought and you'e right, after quilting who is going to notice?

Whats the problem with yours?? Post some pics here and lets see if we can help you ....

Thank you @Iminei

I ordered a length of Tula pink fabric, coloured stars on a cream background but the cream is far too light.  I have stitched my blocks together in fours to make six larger blocks. I was thinking of stitching them to the wadding and background using the stitch and flip method which I hope will make it easier to quilt? (I don't have a lot of room around my machine) and then attaching the border in the same way ?

I am not long up so will put a photo on later.

Embroidery would look good on the borders of yours :)

Right I can see your problem ...

The Tula pink (with the swallows) is gorgeous but it is indeed too light! it will make the blocks seem a bit dirty I think.

Your backing fabric would work as you obviously chose it in person and the tones work and

Yes the binding fabric would be too busy but ideal for binding ...

Obi Wan has taught you well Lilian .......

I now have the top all sewn, I decided to go for the full top and sandwich all in one.  I am unsure how wide to make the border - 4" finished?  or more? the top measures 80" long x  52.5" wide

Thought we needed an all in one shot to help us remember how gorgeous this looks ...

Its quite a long thin quilt (80 x 52) so why not put borders on the sides, maybe 5" or 6" wide* if you have enough fabric and just an inch strip on either end ... to preserve your lovely points!

* @The Mathmagician of Quilting Maths  will be a better person to ask for the measurements to make it a bit better proportioned.

If your blocks are 13" x 13" (finished) the overall measurement should be 78" x 52".

If you want to use that quilt on a single bed the proportions are about right, you won't need much in the way of borders, a couple of inches all around will be enough.

Title: Re: TSP's Mysteryquiltalongathon - Assembly instructions
Post by: Lilian on December 30, 2021, 12:11:28 PM
Thanks @BrendaP it is for a small double (4ft) wide bed. It wasn't initially but as it progressed I thought it would make a good bedspread. I have laid it out on the bed and realised that one end has the 1.5 inch strips with little cornerstones, that is making it a bit longer.  I have extra strips that I made and think I will put them on the other end to match.  I do need it to be a bit wider so that there is some overhang at the sides.

Maybe 5 or 6 inch side borders and narrower top and bottom borders?
Title: Re: TSP's Mysteryquiltalongathon - Assembly instructions
Post by: BrendaP on December 30, 2021, 13:22:45 PM
@Lilian  if you have the fabric adding another column of six blocks would be the best solution.

IMO uneven borders never look quite right.  Another solution could be to remove one row of four  blocks and then add wide borders all round.  You could use the spare blocks to make pillow shams.
Title: Re: TSP's Mysteryquiltalongathon - Assembly instructions
Post by: Lilian on December 30, 2021, 13:46:20 PM
@BrendaP Thank you, I think deep down I knew making more blocks for the side was the answer.  I have two blocks already made so only have four more.  I don't think i have enough for my purple blocks, could possibly order some fat quarters, I think they are still available.

Taking off blocks from the bottom will make it a bit small.

Off to find more purple fabrics.  I won't finish this in the time limit  :(

If it is only one purple block that you are short of matching fabric arrange it so that that the slightly different block is in a corner where it will be less noticeable.

I won't be finishing my quilt any time soon either! I haven't been able to sit at the sewing machine for 3 months now  (due to problems with my spine) so will have to wait until things ease a little for me. Also, there is the fact that I just don't like the look of the final quilt - I like each individual block but don't like them all together - I just need to find a way to fall back in love with it, then I can complete it once I'm able to.  :)

I'm getting there.
Have changed my mind about doing QAYG since I found a fleece blanket in a colour I'll never ever use ( why did I ever buy it?) so I'm going to back it with that, quilt throught the lot and have a 2 layer quilt, which I'll give to my neighbour.

This saves me the hassle and expense of buying backing fabric and gets rid of the yellow blanket!

I've joined all the squares and columns and have added fabric where necessary - it really is a  dog's dinner, but  it'll look cheerful when it's done. I'm not gifting it to a quilter, he'll never know!

I have 2 lots of wadding, different sorts and not quite enough of either to fill the sandwich. Can't mix them as one is, a cotton and one is a puffy one which I think would be best for this, quilt and the effect I want.
Guess it's the Internet here I come

Completion is delayed further as I have ordered wadding, hopefully enough for Zigzag quilt as well

I've cut the borders for my quilt and hope to start attaching them this week.  Then I have to find a large space to do the layering

I've hit a stumbling block with my quilt.  I ordered more of the bg fabric to put a small border around before putting a larger border.  When the fabric arrived I started cutting strips but when I looked at it next to the quilt I see the fabric is not the same colour as the first lot.  :\  It is more beige/stone coloured and not cream. I am thinking about it before I decide if it's worth using.  So difficult to get to a shop to be able to compare colours  :(

Is there a shop you can send them a sample of your colour for them to manually match on your behalf? @Lilian

@fajita I am looking for a shop, there are a couple I could visit but only one that has a large selection, they are only open 2 days a week.  I might contact the original supplier to see if they made a mistake as this pattern comes in different shades. When I looked at their website it only shows the beige/stone colour now.

If you cannot contact the original supplier and come to an 'agreement'  ... Might I suggest Midsomer quilting (https://midsomerq.com/)

They are a Fabulous Emporia if all things quilting... have masses of stock and very helpful staff. They regularly receive swatches to match up and do reasonably priced mail order ... Give them a call and ask for De or Nik (both Ladies) and you wont go wrong.

Thank you @Iminei I have purchased from them before.  I browsed their site but couldn't find the same.

The ironic thing is that I know I have about a yard left but don't know where I've put it.

I was setting about scouring my stash to find the missing fabric when... Eureka! It had slipped down the side of my table  :) I hope there is enough for the borders.

I will use the length I purchased for cushion backs.

Thank goodness for that @Lilian

Well batting sandwich nearly finished.
I usually use pins but am thinking I should undo pins and baste to make quilting slightly easier.

Suddenly, after being left to one side for a few months, my box of blocks have been transformed into this.  :scream:

It's actually in two 'halves' at the moment. It's quite big and I don't think I'll be able to work on it if it's joined together. It'll never fit through my machine, so to save temper tantrums I'm going to try to work on it one piece at a time and then join it.

I have some wadding but don't have any backing fabric yet.

Sandra.

Give up.
On my minds eye I have a, quilting pattern reflecting the circles of the backing fabric.
I am now I undoing it.
I don't think I have the skill to do what I want but I don't want boring straight lines
Will rethink later

@Bjay  I have started quilting mine, just some straight lines to start with but I do intend attempting some outlined stars. I thought about how to fo these and decided i will use freezer paper yo grt the shape and then stitch around the outside of the shape

Nothing wrong with straight lines @Bjay

While unpicking I have had an idea involving straight lines. It won't reflect the backing fabric though but it will work I think

Next time I can face doing the photo thing I'll do that. It really isn't special and I want no comments about the distinct lack of quilting - I only did enough to stop the blocks from slipping about.

Today I have started sewing the outline stars on my quilt. It is proving quite laborious having to manhandle all the quilt under my machine. I have done 5 stars today, they are all around the border  :faints:  I can't stop now but it will take some time. Then i can cut the binding  :meditate:

Hooray
All I have to do apart from the binding is to quilt the border and that is just going to be straight stitching and straight lines   doesn't need more as fabric etc is very fussy. That will be finished tomorrow and who knows by the time, we are together again it may be finished (or not)

@realale and others that backing fabic was a find at the only Qultshow I've been to for 2 years. It was 108ins wide so no cutting involved
