Fun with Fabric / Memory hole
« on: February 26, 2024, 09:17:48 AM »
I need to order some more of that stuff used for appliqué that’s a glue layer between two sheets of paper, and the name of it and where I ordered it from last time has vanished in the brain fog. It’s a thermal glue layer, you iron one side onto your motif, rip off the paper, and iron it onto its placement. Can anyone whose grey cells are still working this morning help? Boy do I hate memory fades.  :( Thanks in advance.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Free Motion Embroidery
« on: January 28, 2023, 13:32:14 PM »
This is a long shot. Some years ago I watched a YouTube of a man, I think Indian, using a straight stitch industrial machine to produce amazing free motion work. I wanted to watch this again, but have lost the link. Does this ring any bells with anyone by any chance?  :D

Who in the U.K. or Europe might carry a terrific selection of open ended zips?

Your Favourite Suppliers / Plush Addict

I was browsing for corduroy and came across this company. There prices seem reasonable and they have delivery to Europe. Has anyone ordered from them.

Your Favourite Suppliers / Good place for nice buttons (Europe)
« on: February 14, 2022, 15:04:13 PM »
Just got some really nice buttons from Mathilda.store in Bonn. Very quick service. I’m in Europe so I don’t know how it would be for U.K. residents, but there was no postage.

Technical Help / Feeding elastic through channels.
« on: December 03, 2021, 14:31:27 PM »
Going mad here. I have the bottom band of a bomber jacket with three channels to feed quarter inch elastic through. The fabric ain’t slippy! I got it to pull through by stitching the elastic end to a ribbon of the same width and threading that through with a bodkin, but  the last few inches of the second row I have just done sticks in the fabric - it’s resisting attempts to push the gathers along to take up the slack, so I’ve got one half gathered up too much and the other end ( not bodkin end) slack with four inches of elastic hanging out that won’t pull into the channel. Does anyone have a foolproof method for this? My hands are hurting with the effort.

Fun with Fabric / Nice lining?
« on: August 25, 2021, 16:37:52 PM »
Who is good for purchase of a nice lining fabric, to go in a lighter coat? Not the harsh stuff, something you’re not feeling apologetic over when you hang your coat over the back of your chair when getting coffee and cake
I’m trying to get something like a cornflour blue, but slightly towards the turquoise, probably impossible to match but one can dream.

In the wardrobe / Shirt in crazy fabric combo
« on: December 15, 2020, 20:20:36 PM »
Just signalling that I’ve started making a shirt in fabric any sensible person would have left in stash. There are two fabrics each one in the devilish category which I’m attempting to make up as one, a kind of silvery grey chiffon mounted on a lightweight satin. I constructed the collar today. Don’t be too surprised if this thread goes oddly quiet, with no lovely pic in the offing.

How I miss this Hong Kong store with its reliable delivery and bargain silk. I have not found a replacement.

In the wardrobe / Bias cut dress
« on: October 30, 2020, 07:25:27 AM »
I’m passing on this little tip in case it is useful - the awfully slippery satin I am using for a trial run of a dress for Dd was tamed by drawing round the pattern pieces on the fabric, chopping across the length roughly, then machining round the chalk lines before cutting the pieces. I did this to stop it stretching before assembling. I’ll keep you posted on how it behaves when it’s all together, the CF seam stitched so far ( with very slight zigzag) behaved perfectly. Fingers crossed for the zip. Any other tips For bias welcome.

What are good suppliers of labels (stitch in with embroidered name)? Has anyone any recommendations.

Your Favourite Suppliers / plain weave viscose?
« on: May 29, 2020, 09:08:24 AM »
I'm looking for a viscose or mix in a woven fabric with a decent drape, for another jumpsuit from Butterick 6441. Ideally I'd like a sort of washy floral pattern on a dark background. It has to be heavy enough to work for the trouser bit and light enough for the top. Any suggestions for online suppliers welcome.

In the wardrobe / Your oldest garment
« on: April 29, 2020, 20:14:50 PM »
Batting off another thread, I wondered what is the oldest piece of clothing still in regular use y'all have. I think mine is a dressing gown I bought round about 1973.

Anyone else making these? I’m having a lovely time running up some for one daughter, virtually no fitting, just a breeze. Some of the stash is getting used, all good.
